Asymair95 174 Posted April 27, 2019 After a year long hiatus, I’m back! The weather has turned, and with warm weather, the RC bug bites. I have been really enjoying my first rally car, a TT02 Datsun 240z. The build thread is on here somewhere. Some pics. http:// http:// http:// http:// http:// I am now going to try and build a Porsche 911 rally on a TT02 chassis. I love the versatility of the rally chassis, and my Datsun is a blast to drive. Can’t wait to get started.
Asymair95 174 Posted April 27, 2019 Getting rolling on the build. I don’t want to beat a dead horse, and I know rally chassis have been featured on here in the past, so I won’t be posting too much of the chassis build unless folks want that. Using the standard Tamiya Porsche TT02 kit. Don’t mind the helper, he was thirsty. http:// Some of the hop up parts I’ll be using. Low friction suspension balls, adjustable steering tie rods, ball bearings, and mini cva shocks. I have a set of super mini shocks also, will see which one works/fits better. I believe I have the standard mini shocks on the Datsun. http:// There is an amazing Porsche rally build on the scale builders guild forum. I don’t know how to post a link to it, or I would. It is worth the google search, believe me. Guy did an amazing job.
Asymair95 174 Posted April 27, 2019 I found the thread on the scale builders forum again. Here is a pic of Trialpsycho’s 911 build. It’s nothing short of amazing, and I will be using it for inspiration. http:// Got a bit more done last night. I will be doing some trimming on the suspension parts to increase travel and gain ride height. On the front suspension upper A arm there is a flat area inside the cup where the round bushing fits in. This flat area limits suspension travel, by cutting it out you can gain a few mm. The part on the right has the flat area removed with a sharp exacto blade. http:// On the same part there is a tab that sticks down that I believe is a steering stop. In extreme suspension deflection with the wheels turned it binds on the upright which has a similar tab. By removing the tabs you gain some travel and ground clearance. Part on the left has the tab removed with a pair of side cutters. http://
ruebiracer 1024 Posted April 27, 2019 Great idea! I also have thought About building a Safari Rally 911, based on the TA02 934, and also like Trialpsychos build a lot! Wish you all the best fun, curious about your build, will follow it for sure!
ruebiracer 1024 Posted April 27, 2019 By the way, the weathering of your Datsun looks great! Guess it´s not only dirty, but built this way?
Asymair95 174 Posted April 27, 2019 Thanks. Yeah, the Datsun was weathered before it even hit the dirt. It looks even better now after driving it for awhile.
Asymair95 174 Posted April 28, 2019 Continuing on with the suspension. http:// The lower A arms have two tabs on them. The one on the right has them trimmed off. The lower tab will catch on ground obstacles, and the upper tab will limit steering and suspension travel. http:// The uprights get the same treatment, remove the tabs as shown. http:// Next I shortened the lower upright pivot. This will again increase ground clearance.
Asymair95 174 Posted April 28, 2019 http:// With the upright installed, you can see how the pivot just barely peeks out of the ball bushing. http:// Instead of using the plastic spacer on the right, I will instead use a steel washer. The washer has to be wide enough to prevent the A arm from popping loose, but not so big as to interfere with suspension travel. http:// On the left is the stock high clearance configuration. On the right is the modified version. There is easily a quarter inch more clearance there. The suspension travel is the same, I’m just removing protrusions from the bottom of the car.
Asymair95 174 Posted April 28, 2019 Got the mini cva dampers built up and installed last night. Used the three hole disc on the front and two hole disc on the back because of the extra weight back there. This seems to work well on the Datsun. http:// Dampers installed in the upper mount hole. Mounting them in the lower hole is possible too, but it is prone to damage. http:// You can see the damage to the clevis on the Datsun from having it mounted in the lower hole before I moved it up. It is too close to the ground and will destroy the clevis or tear out the ball joint. This is partially my fault from driving in non scale terrain.
Superluminal 3729 Posted April 28, 2019 What tyres are those????

Superluminal 3729 Posted April 28, 2019 Sweet - they look much nicer than the normal block tyres.
Asymair95 174 Posted April 28, 2019 Yes, that is them. They are great for tarmac driving, but have fair to poor traction in dirt. It makes for some fun power slides though You can also get them on eBay with rims for $10.
Aerobert 2093 Posted April 28, 2019 Very interesting build, I have something similar in my mind. I will follow your build. And your Datsun looks very nice.
Asymair95 174 Posted April 28, 2019 I got the rear suspension built up with the wide axles installed. The Porsche kit does not come with them, but I had a special edition white TT02 kit that did have the optional C6 axles included. I stole those and will use the wide hex adaptor to widen things out. The Porsche kit comes with narrow tires in the front and wide tires in the back. However, I will be using standard width tires all around like the 1:1 scale rally Porsche does. http:// Also getting close to a paint choice. Maybe something along these lines. http://
Asymair95 174 Posted April 29, 2019 Getting to the good part now I enjoy detailing the bodies. Chassis is basically done, just waiting on a servo to show up. http:// Body is cut out and temp fitted. Wanted to see how the wide axle shafts worked out, but it still appears to be a few mm short. http:// Tried to get an angle to show how the rear tires are recessed a bit. Anyone have any ideas to widen it out? Are there even longer axle shafts I can use? It’s not terrible, but I was hoping for better.
ruebiracer 1024 Posted April 29, 2019 With Tamiya 53448 you could reach another 2-2,5 mm, if you want. These is some axle spacers and flat axle nuts with shims. Used it for my M05RA Renault 5 to get a fat rear end. But for a Rallye Porsche, the stance is really good already. On them the tires look Always a bit more lost in the arches, to get the clearance for the Rallye- Suspension travel. Like your Detail work on the Suspension, very helpful for driving off the road... Asymair95 174 Posted April 30, 2019 http:// Fabricated a brush guard up last night. Will try and fit some rally lights inside there if I can find some small enough. Anyone have suggestions for some round old school piaa or hella lights? I got the body cut out and sanded with a dremel. Washed the inside with warm soapy water and a 3m pad. Also masked the windows and lights as I will be fabricating some light buckets.
Asymair95 174 Posted April 30, 2019 http:// Fitted up a pair of lights from a Blackfoot I had laying around. Need to make up decals though for the front. They obviously won’t be lit, and are a little out of scale for my liking. Suppose I could just buy a set of the cheap rally lights from China and fit those up, but again, I probably wouldn’t light them to avoid the exposed wires. I would also have to braze on some kind of mounting bracket. Decisions...decisions.
Asymair95 174 Posted April 30, 2019 http:// This would be a good looking build too.
Asymair95 174 Posted May 1, 2019 Fabricated a bumper guard for the rear out of house wire. Came out good, but very tedious work. It’s actually quite strong.
Grastens 2795 Posted May 1, 2019 The Lancia 037 light pod might be worth an attempt: It would require the Lancia 037 J parts (0983049 or 0005170), K parts (1911472), and M parts (19115121), but would allow for a contemporary appearance.
Asymair95 174 Posted May 2, 2019 Lots of painting today. Will be backing with silver and black. Painted the brush guards black and will hit it with flat clear. Painted some fine mesh I will be using for the intercooler grill and brake cooling ducts. I like to use as many detail pieces as possible instead of decals.
mark_biddle 14 Posted May 3, 2019 Have you thought about spots on the bonnet ? Used to be THE way they were mounted back in the day
Asymair95 174 Posted May 3, 2019 Was looking at integral hood spots like that, but was afraid I wouldn’t be able to blend them into the body in a realistic way. I know they make a lexan kit for this though as I have seem them used on YouTube. The painting continues... Im using the clear film as a masking, and painting the bumpers on the outside. First backed with a white. Then a fluorescent orange. You can see the intercooler and brake cooling ducts cut out here also, as well as the painted light bar.
