Good place to buy shims

Recommended Posts

In an effort to take some of the play out of my tamiya's I would like to shore up some of the parts with shim washers. Does anyone have any good suppliers?

UK based preferably so I don't have to wait too long. 50-100 qty of 0.1 to 0.5mm range mostly 3-5mm bore.

Any common sources?

I tend to get cheap ones from chinese sites like aliexpress to be honest, I just put up with the wait.

Even then it's not a catch-all,

Depends if you need them to go next to bearings or not. If you don't, you can get them pretty cheap in big quantities that way. If you do, it gets tricky because a lot of the generic shims not made especially for RC tend to be too wide and will bind the inner and out race of the bearing.

Buying RC specific ones can start adding up when you need to break open several packs for one vehicle. Sometimes you can get them cheaper by looking for ones intended for airsoft guns.

I have a few packs of these:

You can get copper ones too that can work out cheaper if you need 1mm thick "gap filler" ones.

The 5x7mm ones work fine with Tamiya 1150 bearings but with the other sizes you can get binding. Something I do sometimes is put an RC one against the bearing and then the generic ones next to the RC one, that way if you have a lot of space that needs filling you can sandwich the cheap ones between a couple of proper RC ones.

Have tried several other RC-branded shims, but end of day if you care about exact sizing the Tamiya ones are still the best & most accurate for dimensions. And no dags hanging off the shims nor crinkling from sloppy stamping.
