Is this real? GF01 Monster Beetle...

Recommended Posts

Late night insomnia helped me stumble over this picture -

Looks a bit like the old QD shell.

Its official. Its ob Tamiya USA. Uses the Dynahead portal axles on the GF01 with a 'specially shortened version of the iconic bodyshell'. Opens up the possibility of a Comical option now they have a short wheelbase shell for the WR02CB chassis

Not quite correct. It's the 1/14 scale Monster Beetle QD body, which has nothing in common with the Monster Beetle body except being a Beetle. :) Wouldn't be surprised if TUSA claimed it to be a "'specially shortened version of the iconic bodyshell" though. To put it mildly; TUSA isn't a particularly reliable information source.

I was about to say "meh" but then I realised...  1:14 scale.  Same as my tractor trucks.  And I'm always looking for cool and interesting loads to go on my trailers...

GF01 + portal axles... does that win Record Holder for Most Gears in a Tamiya?

I'm a bit surprised Tamiya didn't go for the 1/12 Toyota Land Cruiser 40 pick-up body combined with the portals and rock block tyres to create a mini-crawler.

I think the Dynahead will hold that title for a while 😊

Think so for number of gears.

For number of bearings, it's beaten by the Leopard 2A6 tank:

G6-01TR: 86 bearings when using the 4WS option, 84 without.

Leo: 90 bearings.

fingers crossed that Tamiya will be using a  different plastic for the shell.

I think that age most likely played a role here. The QD-bodies were generally quite tough. And by the way, the chrome of the QD models was absolutely superior to the chrome on any other Tamiya model. It was applied over a layer of copper and from my experience, it's a lot harder to remove than the chrome on other Tamiya parts.

That said, my understanding is that most "chrome" plated plastic is actually just nickelplated. Actual chrome plating would be what's referred to as "triple plating", which is first copper, then nickel and finally chrome plating, which is a lot more durable than the "dual plating"process of nickel over copper or nickel over conductive paint, which I understand is normally used for "chrome" on models.

The bigger problem may have been the 2 meters height of the shelf it had fallen of  ;)

Now it really looks like a monster

Looking at the box picture again, I’m wondering why the front bumper from the Comical Grasshopper/Hornet wasn’t used as it much more similar style to the original MB?

I suspect it's just a cost thing. That bumper is on the WR02CB M parts tree which no crossover at all with the GF01. Would be simply and cheap enough to just buy that parts tree if you wanted the other bumper though.

Good point! I guess the penny pinchers stopped it. The WR-02CB M-parts would have to be included, whereas the regular WR-02 bumpers are included with the WR-02 F-parts that have to be included anyway. A sprue of M-parts saved......

Really interested in this, though mainly for the body as I have a GF01 already.

The reduction portals - I get the clearance benefit, but do they slow the vehicle down, or just reduce stress on the drivetrain?

They slow things down, but increase the torque so it makes things better for crawling rather than racing/bashing.

Yeah, odd choice I'd have thought for this buggy? Monster truck wheels for crawling?

Or is that more a true monster truck, all the torque to climb over obstacles rather than how we're used to seeing an MB dash about? :)

This is cool! I do wonder about the stability, being even taller than a normal WR/GF chassis, but maybe going slower will help...?

I love the parts-bin engineering, and recycling the QD bodies is something I hadn't thought of. Goes along with the "comical" buggies well. I like this new trend; I hope they continue with them.

What the h*ll is going on here? I mean look at these cool new cars Tamiya has announced in the past few years...

While other manufacturers are just after speed and performance Tamiya brought back the new golden age of RC.

Konghead, Dancing Rider, Lunch Box mini, Comical Grasshopper and now this beauty. I know that some of these models may use parts from older cars but really who cares? NICE WORK TAMIYA! :)
