Toyota HJ40 Ute Custom Build

Recommended Posts

Hi TC folks.

I’ve been keen on a CR01 crawler build for some time and was planning to do a Toyota Land Cruiser 40. Inspired by my brother-in-law’s 1:1 truck I’ve decided to do a custom ute version instead. Here’s a pic of the real thing.

First step is to cut down the body from the 58405 Toyota Land Cruiser 40 CR01 kit to become the cab.

More to come!

After some online research and prototyping, the method I used to join the body was as follows:

On the inside, a layer of shoe-goo, drywall tape, and a strip of polycarbonate offcut as a sandwich. The offcut was from the unused middle section of the body so fitted well and was to stop excessive localised flexing of the join.

On the outside of the join a layer of JB-Weld epoxy.

A dusting of white paint to better see the surface as I plan to paint from the outside.

Eat, sleep, epoxy, sand, repeat.....

A little more progress.

I’ve opted for an SCX10 chassis - the builders kit. This gives three different wheelbases out of the box.

Based on various measurements of the cab, the scale is between 1:10 and 1:9. The longest wheelbase gives me 1:9.5, so that’s what I’m going with.

Proportions look pretty good, but unfortunately the rear suspension towers won’t work with the tray. Some thinking to do....

Finished painting the cab and the chassis now has axles. Still no solution for the suspension.

For the cab I used off the shelf vinyl cans. Pretty cheap and gives a good flexible finish.

Something like this...?

It doesn't seem to be in production any more, which is a shame if it works.

These do look good! Thinking I may be able to fabricate something similar.

There's a TRX4 / CMX version that looks similar too but if you can make the parts yourself, even better!

Thanks for that link too. I’m going to try and solve the suspension conundrum this weekend.

In the meantime, I’ve assembled and painted a killerbody tray. My original intent was to scratch build a tray, but this looks really nice and has working hinges and latches.

Hoping my integrated rear suspension and tray mount solution will work....

Sorted out the suspension and tray mounts.

Using CAD (cardboard aided design) cut and painted an angle section of aluminium for the suspension mounts.

These also have the magnets for the tray.

Suspension points are adjustable so I can fit smaller springs or adjust ride height.

youve done a really good job with the shutlines. Sometimes they can be a bit overdone but these look about right

Well, I’ve pulled my finger out and made some progress after many months....

My daughter has been getting into 3D design and printing, so I got her to do the front indicators, which I painted.

and she also did some side mirrors.

Very capable off-road.

All in all I’m very happy with how it looks, the scale details, and how it goes on the track.

Thanks for checking it out!!

A little more 3D printing to change the front grill/headlight covers to the later post-1979 version to match my brothers 1:1 version.

Note also the 3D printed axle stands.
