Busdriver 6209 Posted June 5, 2019 (edited) Apart from tires I'm now read to start my Dynahead. There are two things about this that I never really liked and that was the body and the wheels and tires. So Im using Tamiya Unimog wheels with 1.9inchx110mm rock crawler tires. and I was going to cut up a Tamiya Unimog body using just the cab and building some sort of rear deck. However whilst playing around with the body I put it on my FAVbug(blitzer) chassis. It may be just the way the light caught it but I had an idea. As I was probably going to ditch the body I thought I'd take a scalpel to it and see what I came up with. So I starting this build where most people end ie the body. After taking a stiff drink i set to with the scalpel. I'm quite pleased with the result the result . Its not as clear as I would like it as photographing clear lexan is not easy. I'll probably have to paint the out side of this shell as I'm going to have to build some strength into the parts that I cut out and use some still plasticard to build the windshield surround. Anyway this is what I ended up with!!! May give the shell an internal dust coat of paint so I can better see what I'm doing? Busdriver 6209 Posted June 5, 2019 Might deepen side windows a tad as well. Got a bit of a VW T5 look about it?
graemevw 823 Posted June 8, 2019 I like where its going! Reminds me of supervan!
Busdriver 6209 Posted June 19, 2019 Done quite a bit of chassis building. Not doing a bit by bit build as there are plenty of excellent builds on this site already. Mine is more to do with bodywork, wheels and tires. I've decided to do two bodies for this truck. Both will have the same underpinnings ie chassis wheels and tires but one will be using an adapted version of the dynahead and one will be called DynaMog. Not sure which Unimog I'm going to use. I would love to do a hard body of some form but they are really quite expensive, failing that I will either order a Tamiya 406, cut the bed off, then use the cab section. Then make up a simple flat bed and roll over bar. Or axial I beleive do a Unimog cab +interior but I cand find the dimensions. Ideally it needs to be at least 200mm wide at the edge of the wheel arch. I want most of the front wheels covered. I could use slightly narrower hexes than stock which actually come with the kit. As does a huge amount of unused plastic. This really isn't a very eco friendly kit.having said that the portals are a delight to construct though if you don't do a full bearing build the internal friction must be phenomenal with all the other gears in the chassis as well That reminds me I need to do a mist coat on the body so it's easier to photograph! Busdriver 6209 Posted June 19, 2019 get a better idea like this. Was always going to be painted on the outside though this still has the film on. Was thinking this might make a good heavy wrecker thunderbirds or captain scarlet style. One of the sprues included in the kit are like a set of chassis rails that would make a great crane jib. Not sure what they are for King Yellow or Konghead!!. Might even use original wheels as they are quite "thunderbirds "Â
JennyMo 3526 Posted June 20, 2019 Loving it - looks like something Gerry Anderson would have come up with! F. A. B.! Jx
Busdriver 6209 Posted June 20, 2019 Thats kinda what I was thinking. Just started googling action figures and images of Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlett and Joe 90 Vehicles. Showing my age
Busdriver 6209 Posted July 12, 2019 Things have moved on a bit. Tried all sorts including a recovery vehicle, a skip lorry and a Thunderbirds tanker!!!! Then saw an Army truck and thought aha!!!! This is the end result. I'm still waiting for a Unimog body from Modelsport which I might adapt. Wanted to see what I could do with Lexan(not my preferred material) Found by cutting up surplus polystyrene and dissolving it in liquid poly it stuck quite well. The panels above the front wheel wells are bolted on with m2 nuts and bolts. Once again as with my FAV bug only the wheels and tyres are bought specially. everything else is from spares etc. I will be adding some extra details and will use some of the decals to add detail but Dynahead will not appear!!!! Not sure about front bumper. Without it it will climb up a wall and fall over backwards!!!!!! Will see what happens if Unimog ever arrives. May end up putting on my CC-01 in place of the Defender. Also like the idea of using the Ford Aeromax cab unit that @JennyMo used but do a Lo-----ng Kamper rather than a Stumpy one. Who knows, especially me thats half the fun.
Superluminal 3750 Posted July 12, 2019 Yes!!!! This is exactly the sort of vehicle it should have always been
Busdriver 6209 Posted July 12, 2019 Thanks for that. Just my wild imagination. Perhaps some of us should apply for jobs with Mr T
TurnipJF 9192 Posted July 12, 2019 Very nice! A distinct improvement over the standard one. I look forward to seeing how it looks with its decals on.
Busdriver 6209 Posted July 15, 2019 I think it's finally done, well almost!!. Have cut up some of the decals and used them where they look best. I've added 2 exhaust stacks in brass that I'm going to leave as they are. Also I've started fabricating some sand ladders to place on running boards, may get a few other scale bits in time. I have a 2 wild willy winches that I might use as well. I'm still waiting for the Unimog body which is expected into stock tomorrow, fingers crossed. If it doesn't look right I'll use it for something. Have really enjoyed converting this from an ugly duckling to a ugly swan!!!!!
Busdriver 6209 Posted July 23, 2019 finally the unimog has arrived. Â Â Now I have a problem, having spent quite a lot of time on the original body I quite like it. It needs tweaking, maybe some some big tombstone radiators at the rear but all in all not too bad. I can either re work this quite a lot ( the bed is far too short)Â or use the body on my CC01 chassis. Then I could run them together?. Have now cut the body and still dont know what to do. Any thoughts?????
Busdriver 6209 Posted July 24, 2019 DYNA Mog is born!!!!! Â With a bit of WAD (wood aided design) I have started to mock up a flatbed. Might even ue this wood as its probably no heavier than plastic and I can stain it if need be. Will need to fashion some form of mudguards and a Roll cage but other than that I dont intend to do too much. Am going to look at magnets to fit this and the Dynaheadish body. With luck this will also fit my CC01 if I make the mudguards removeable and another set for single back axle
Busdriver 6209 Posted July 28, 2019 Done a bit more today. Added 2 beams down the inside of the cab that act like chassis rails under the bed. They are made from some kind of plastic but as to where they came from I have no idea. found them in my odds and sods box. Not even really modelling stuff. They are stuck to the body with dissolved polystyrene that seems to stick really well to polycarbonate and these. Both surfaces were roughed up to get a good key. The body was always going to be sprayed from the outside so you wont see anything. Made up a roll over bar and mocked up some brackets, might be a bit wide. Also drilled the bed for two short body mounts for the rear, the front is fitted on magnets. May use magnets for rear as well when extra arrive. Having looked at some extreme videos of offroad Unimogs I dont think I will have any rear mudguards but will run some fake chassis rails to hide the G6-01 chassis. Then make up some kind or rear end under the bed with lights and a tow bar. Then I have to make up some sides for the body to hide the motor then diagonal bars for the roll cage.
Busdriver 6209 Posted July 31, 2019 Painted the cab section and stained the rear deck. Also used line scriber to make plank detail on deck. Have bought some more brass to make up the roll cage and some L section to make an edge for the deck
geniusanthony 361 Posted July 31, 2019 I really like how this is turning out with the Unimog shell. I see the brass has collapsed some in the bends I have never tried the springs or tried using brake line, only brass. When I am bending brass I will crimp one end shut, fill with fine sand, tap to compress the sand and fill the rest of the way with more sand. Crimp the other end shut when packed and full. Make a small funnel with paper to ease filling. To bend a consistent radius I may sand a wood block to shape (it helps with matching) or bend around an object. When you get it to where you want, Dremel the ends to dump the sand and make less mess. You can barely see the rollbar on the pic below, it is made from 7 segments or so with smaller joiner tubes inside the main tubes. Was the only way I could maintain symmetry and get it all to lay flat from all the bending. Hope I'm not hijacking you too much I just remember my learning curve with this truck.
Busdriver 6209 Posted July 31, 2019 Thanks for the tips. I'm actually using a brake line bending tool but as you have said there has been some collapse. I'll try the sand method when I do some more. I think I have some fine silver sand somewhere. Did you solder it all together?

I had tried drilling and adding fishmouths to the tube at perpendicular intersects, found that it was too easy to catch the thin tube and tear it. Drilling a small hole adding a joiner pipe seems safest and strongest. Used metalworking solder from the homestore. I don't know what silver sand is, I used screened beach sand with no little pebbles to give me trouble, similar fineness to mason sand.
Busdriver 6209 Posted August 1, 2019 Its what you use for kids sand pit. and also for brushing into the cracks between pavior bricks on a drive way. Very fine so compacts well
Busdriver 6209 Posted August 4, 2019 (edited) Coming along. Looks better with masks off and some detail on. Modelsports Im hoping are going to measure the Axial Unimog Roll cage as I think with a bit or reworking might fit. Will be alot esier than fabricating one and frankly at under £30 its worth a punt Edited August 4, 2019 by Busdriver double picture
Busdriver 6209 Posted August 14, 2019 Great news, e mail today from shapeways to say my roll cage has been dispatched, 2 weeks early. Added a few stickers along with homemade snorkel, a Willy dummy winch, infill between rear wheels to hide the red servo and a lightbar/bumper for the rear. May paint roof red as well as the side panels that will fix to roll bar. These will be removable and will have more stickers on. Otherwise not much else to do just run it. Had a few garden runs and its pretty good. Hoping to trail it over the weekend with the defender in the woods opposite my house. Weather permtting. Â apologies for the self portrait!!!!!!!
Busdriver 6209 Posted August 17, 2019 (edited) Took Dynamog out for her first trail run. Not much stops it, having the middle set of wheels it doesent get hung up on much. I wish I knew how to do video as it looks really good. Had one problem though nearly fried a waterproof ESC!!!. Think I have saved it after an hour in a warm oven then separated and put back together with shoegoo. Think I will build some kind of box that may work as a bench seat to put electics in to keep dry. Mine are mounted at the front rather than the rear as in the instructions. Also started playing around with the rear bed that I cut off.. Might make it detachable so it can be used either way. Also have to do a bit of dremmel work where the front wheels make contact at full lock. Now has a bit of real weathering on it  Edited August 17, 2019 by Busdriver wrong item
Busdriver 6209 Posted August 21, 2019 This might not be a rock crawler but boy can it climb! These pictures aren't great so it's difficult to see how steep it is! Suffice to say without drag brakes I decided not to drive down so I had to climb, and I mean climb up to get it. Sadly the next downward hill was too tempting and a mega~roll followed. Result the cab and bed were separated causing quite a bit of damage. Can be repaired but as I have dynaheahish body I can still have fun. Think I need to make the rear bed out of platicard as wood and aluminium is just to heavy and puts too much strain on the joint between it and the body. If I'm feeling rich I might just go for a loops hard body + a new plastic deck
