2wd Baja Ford F-150 Stepside

Recommended Posts

So after many years of planning and doing absolutely nothing, I decided to finally sit down and make this a reality, assuming that all the parts work together😂

I’m starting with this:

Tamiya King Hauler drop axle that I’ll be 4 linking....

I had these RC4WD King Shocks from a previous build, they might be a tad too long, but I’ll make them work.

The Shock and link mount is from a steering knuckle for a Tamiya Fox

Where we stand at the moment, the rails mated to the R1 cage almost perfectly, the only problem Is the body....I might have to hack the cage to make it fit the body better.

I also have to bring the rear axle in a bit more to get the wheelbase right😉

Here are a couple of shots of the rear, to hold you guys over....

mounted the front SCX10 aluminum shock loops.

mounted the stealth magnetic body mount

Waiting on:

front axle truss

low profile steering servo and horn

rare earth magnets to mount the rear of the body

motor pinion and cover....

Hi Technica' - the way you've got your front axle set up looks like it works well with the length of shocks/upper mount on the cage for the ride-height, however, you might want to consider flipping the axle upside down so it is more like a portal if you see what I mean? - that would give you more under-axle clearance at the front if this is going to be modelled on a 2WD race truck?

This is what I did with my HiLux build (above) - albeit on leaf-springs of course... but I'd have thought it would also work with your radius-arm/coil-over set-up too?

Thanks for the suggestion, the only thing is that I ordered an axle truss similar to the one pictured below that I was planning on bolting onto the top of it, but I’m gonna take a look at it again and see if I can re-work it😁

I cut out the headlights from the grille in order to accept a set of Ampro headlight buckets... and it’s already sporting the Ampro grille insert...

So instead of waiting for the SCX10 axle truss, I decided to make my own out of spare parts, and here’s what I’ve come up with....

The wheelbase is set, shock positions are set, and pattern tray is set....need to make up a radio/esc box.....

That has worked really well, i’m interested in seeing this one progress as it’s in a similar vein to something i have planned for the future.

Also, i love the Recaros, where did you get them?

Good job! The truck and chassis looks fantastic. It is also good to see you're using the Grasshopper's rear axle on your build. That must be one of the best things ever made by Tamiya, that transmission just doesn't get the recognition it deserves. So here I am tipping my hat to a mighty fine job!

Added lights to the grill, I will save the Ampro Light buckets for another build, these will do for this build, still need to paint the bottom lense with orange paint...

I didn't like the angle of the shocks before, so I added this shock mount from an STRC SCX10 lift kit, which gave me a 4th hole to mount the shock on, thus giving it a better angle.

the rear is a little higher than the front, due to the battery placement, once I get all the electronics mounted in the back, it'll even out.....Starlord sits a little low on this rig, but he's a low rider, he wouldn't have it any other way, "The customer is always right"

I don't know why he had to bring his Quad Blaster, but there it is, along with his chain link steering wheel...

Nice! I still think your man needs a seat-cushion though!

I got my rare earth magnets in the mail and mounted up the body....on the chassis side is screwed on and on the body side it’s shoe goo’ed on....had to glue on a little piece of plastic in between the magnets to make it easier to take apart, but I can pick up the truck by the body and they hold....

Here's an underbelly view of this hot mess of a truck....you can see how the Magnet Mounts extend to the body mounted magnets....I also mounted a low profile servo and aluminum horn.

Almost there.....

Made a styrene half drop bed, and a box to mount the esc on and hid the light bar wires behind it.

Mounted a leftover Axial receiver box.

Gave Starlord a Raise.....thanks JennyMo for the suggestion👍.

Made the light bar out of square aluminum tubing and Tamiya fake lamps, which were modded to accept leds, some lamp grills and Hi-lift 350 yellow lenses....

Here's a small running video.....This thing is pretty fun, needs a diff locker thought and maybe stiffen up the front suspension

https://youtu.be/mbmPrlXOQMk

Hee hee - looks great!

The soft/lurching front end is actually pretty authentic - but yes, I imagine if you were to lock the rear diff up you might want to tweak the front suspension too as otherwise it could potentially catch and roll more easily?

Needs stickers now!
