JJ’s Project Thread

Recommended Posts

Oh no - just ordered a WLToys 144001 (yeah they don’t have names)

firstly and most obviously it’s not tamiya

secondly it’s RTR

and thirdly it’s 1:14 scale

but you know what - it was £90 with 3 x 2600 2s LiPo!!

so I chucked a full set of metal parts

2 Pieces Front Swing Arm
2 Pieces Rear Swing Arm
2 Pieces C-shaped Seat
2 Pieces Front Steering Cup
2 Pieces Rear Wheel Cup
2 Pieces Steering Component
1 Piece Big Gear
1 Piece Motor Gear
1 Piece Bottom Plate
1 Piece Drive Shaft
1 Piece Front Shock Mount
1 Piece Rear Shock Mount
8 Pieces Bearing
6 Pieces Pull Rod

£35

AND a phatbodies shell for £15

and all for under £150

(plus postage)

looking forward to getting my hand on it AND because I won’t have built it I WILL be running this one ;)

Decided to lower and widen the comical hornet

kmfCi73.jpg

ZSTsc9b.jpg

really easy to do.....

you need 3 things

1.  2x C parts tree for a WT01 (baja king) #0005688 (£8 each)

2. 2x mantaray drive shafts #9805551 (£8 pair)

3. 2x beetle threaded shafts #9805583 (£4 pair)

You need no additional screws or parts or suspension

the WT01 parts are a direct swap for the comical lower and upper arms - just longer

PxchzzC.jpg

so - first remove the lower and upper arms front and rear

D4UitDa.jpg

n1gBGYu.jpg

IKUrUhQ.jpg

Then assemble the new lower arms with the screws from the original short ones and adding the ball connector for the suspension

RLDV13n.jpg

the swap them over (including the one piece upper arms)

oCyQ8QL.jpg

You then need to make the steering arms longer using the longer threaded bar (you may want to go for a slightly longer set Of bars - maybe 80mm)

and swap out the standard drive shafts with the longer ones and reassemble it all

Easy peasy

and

and these are all the parts you have left over

Side benefit of getting the C parts is you can also change the bumper

kmfCi73.jpg

the 2 spring approach is ugly

So you can remove all these

GE6qskY.jpg

Use the bumper and fixing from the C part

Wahoo - the wiltoys 144001 arrived - pretty nippy from China

it was £92 delivered (with 3 x 2600mah 2s LiPo)

have to say im impressed

looks and quality seem high.

Not gonna run it until I’ve added some grease to the diffs but here are the initial pics

Box is simple and packaged averagely

Moved the battery clamps and added a longer battery strap

quick drive on the decking - seems pretty punchy

I’ll try it out a bit more tomorrow but I do want to put the extra grease in the diffs

Got my bling today for the 144001

11Amzz0.jpg

Didn’t wanna go full bling and my main reason for buying was for spares

tries the steering system but the tolerances are too tight

went for the main chassis brace /top deck (used a hair dryer to warm the adhesive and peel the ESC/receiver combo)

also installed rear wing support

looks nice now

YVWWrjg.jpg

ViLLGnq.jpg

i also disassembled the diffs for greasing

took off the tops of the doff covers, removed the diffs, unscrewed and packed with some Tamiya grease.

Inside the diffs themselves there was some grease. On the outside ther was some grease but on the diff housing and not on the outer gearing.

on the pinion and spur gear there was nothing.

I was going to replace the plastic spur gear with the metal one in the set but I was unable to remove it from the prop shaft.

How do they perform? I'm looking for something 2WD for running in my backyard and I would like to have a Buggy with a good performance. Something that will take corners without too much understeer. Will be driven mainly on grass.

Excellently - I’ve only ever driven Tamiya but wanted a 2wd bashed and saw the white one and bought it but it needed a lot of work and spent a few months restoring it - even needed a new esc last week :(

it really surprised me how good it was

im selling them both and tbh just advertised them on Tamiya legends.

selling them together as a pair for £140 plus a bit of postage

or

£80 for the yellow one or £60 for the orange one

ive also got a whole heap of wheels

PM me

Just read that Team Durango didn't exist anymore! That make the availability of spare parts at least difficult. Here in Germany are the rest of the parts on clearance sale. I think I will have a look for other makes first. But thank you for the offer.

This looks like a fun modification. Any idea how similar that chassis is to say something like my Honda city Turbo?  I’d like to do something like this.

Looking at Tamiya base it’s exactly the same chassis so looks like no reason why you couldn’t just buy the 2 parts trees and drive shafts and steering arms to lower and widen the  car

assuming you have the rere city turbo

Yes and I’d like to put larger tires in it and this seems like a way that it can be done.

Yeah - you can get 2 sets of front or backs as even thought it’s 2wd both wheels are hex
