Tamiyaclub Official Top 10 Fastest RC'ers (Part 2)

Recommended Posts

Background

Over 2-1/2 years ago @Jason1145 started the original Tamiya speed run thread, and recently he suggested ownership of the thread should be changed as he's increasingly busy with other things in real life.  Jason, your enthusiasm for Tamiya and your generosity maintaining the original thread for so long is deeply appreciated!  We hope you'll still find time for the hobby and come back to join in the fun!

I offered to take over maintenance on the speed run thread, but to do so without disturbing Jason's post count and history on the site means starting a continuation thread.  With no other volunteers or objections, this is that thread.

For historical purposes, here is the original thread:

How to Enter

Please include the following information when you submit a speed run entry:

  1. Model of your car and which category it is going into.
  2. The top speed in mph and kph, and measurement evidence as stated in the rules.
  3. Your car's setup including:  battery, ESC, motor, gearing, and tires.

If I miss a speed run and don't update the tables, please PM me.  I'm generally on TC at least a few times per week.

The Rules

  1. Each member can enter as many cars as he wants but only one car will be entered per member in the 'Overall Fastest Tamiya' category.
  2. Speed runs will be accepted if shown on video; acceptable methods include:
    • On-board GPS:  This shows the car at a standstill with a GPS device mounted showing 0 mph / 0 kph, then show the car go on it’s speed run and come back to show the GPS recorded speed.
    • Radar gun: The car can be filmed going past a hand-held or tripod-mounted radar gun.
    • On-board FPV video:  This shows video from the car itself with the speed displayed on the screen.
  3. Speed runs must have the body shell mounted on the chassis; this can be the original Tamiya shell or a Lexan/hardbody aftermarket one.
  4. To qualify for a Tamiya category you must use original model-specific gearbox casings and internals.  Tamiya high-speed gear sets and aftermarket internal gears fitting inside stock Tamiya gearboxes and on stock gear shafts are also allowed.
  5. If you modify a Tamiya RC with a third-party gearbox, modify the stock gearbox in any way (holes or drilling to accept different gears not intended for that chassis), or custom-build a gearbox yourself you will be entered into the "Custom Modified Tamiya RC" Category.
  6. Silver can entries:  You MUST show the silver can motor in the speed run video.

Top work Speedy :)

One thing though is that we were only allowing one entry in each category per car so only the fastest run would be recorded on the list.

It saddens me seeing my FF03 relegated to the number 2 spot by @Group c.  I have some time off work soon, might need to do something about that!

I think you're right; I need to check with Group c and see if all his FF03 runs are the same chassis, or if he has a few of them.  I suspect I left too many entries in the FWD list.

Excellent work, @Group c!  Can you edit your post to include ESC and motor details?  Also, did you mean 41T pinion and 60T spur, or is it as you posted?

@El Dougo, are you feeling the pressure yet?  :D

Indeed that's a great run from @Group c, coincidentally I was working on my TB Evo IV yesterday getting it ready for a sneaky run :D.

Last time out I broke a bottom arm and a couple of drive shafts and I discovered that the 419x arms that I fitted are too short for the drive shafts so some more work is required.

@stew_mac, that's a blazing run!  Well done!

I updated your listing in the modified Tamiya category, but do you have two TT02s (one TT02 and one TT02R) or just one you're working with?  I just want to keep the list accurate.

Again, nice job!

I had two TT02’s a type S and type RR. But in the end with crashes and all they both merged into one Type S.

The type RR did a best of 109mph on 3s (I think)

where the type S has alway been the main car and was used with the silver can, 4s and 3s.

As they all use the modified cover I’m happy to just have one car in the modified class to keep it clean and simple.

I have a new build coming along so I should be able to make a better run for the non modified list.

TRF416x on 3s.

OK, I consolidated the modified Tamiya category as you suggested.  I'm thinking you could do as well as your TT02 run, if not better, since the TRF has an open area for pinions and spurs.  Good luck!

Nice work, @Group c!  I'm having some problems updating the listings but will do so as soon as netsmithUK helps me figure out why CAPTCHAs are failing.

That 103 mph speed was what, one frame of the video?   Regardless, it registered so we'll get you to the top of the Top 10 list and the top of the 4WD list soon!

Great work there group C.

If need me you should be able to get the .gpx file from the GoPro. You can just open it with notepad as see the raw data. It will show the top speed.

Some eye catching the 103 flash up!

@Group c, I haven't forgotten about updating the lists.  If you go to the Tamiyaclub News section Chris (netsmithUK) has found a problem and is working on a fix for editing first posts.  So, we'll work through this eventually.

Looks well 👍

Nice to have another dark impact in the mix 😁

I think to be counted, the full run needs to be filmed, to prove that the GPS meter hasn't been swapped.

Amazing run. Can you talk about your modifications? Not looking for any secrets (don't own that chassis) but just curious about how you solved various problems (stability, aero, etc etc).

If you're willing to share, I'd love to see more pics of the chassis. Looks like you did a lot of work to get to this speed. It is not easy to break 100 mph (even 85 mph) with such a small and light vehicle, and live to tell the tale!

I’m happy to share any info. There are a few key parts to speed runs. Tyres, suspension and aero. If you get them right you can start to get all the power from your electronics.

I run Ulti foams but contact and xceed will work. I use 38sh.

Suspension you will need some adjustability. I run 2-3deg toe in on the rear and 1-2deg toe out on the front and no camber. I use 2-3 hole pistons in the shocks with 800cst oil so the are pretty slow reacting.

Aero is then the final piece that really makes it all work after 40mph. The body I use a Le Mans type body. But pan car wedge bodies will work too. I do a little trick to the rear wing and actually lower it for less down force (as there is heaps there already). I also re-enforce the body as they are too thin for high speeds.
