58056 Falcon build x3

Recommended Posts

Embarking on a 3 way with some falcons

Falcon #3 - rolling chassis in need of a clean up

Falcon #1 - filthy wrecked chassis in need of cleaning and repair

Falcon #2 - brand new chassis, gearbox, wheels and loads of other bits (about 75% there)

I’ll post some pics shortly

Ok so here are the 3 falcons I’m working on...

C46BC1FD-83A0-485C-A4B4-BBCEAC9937DB.thumb.jpeg.0731280c046a7995effb71b41174776c.jpeg

from left to right

Falcon #1 - filthy shed.

Parts: most parts included. Some replacement parts needed (gear box has some damage). Wheels not falcon ones.

Tub chassis: strong with support added to weak parts. This chassis will end up on Falcon #3

Shell: solid-ish. Missing some stickers. Missing rear wing.

Process - Strip everything & deep clean with sonic cleaner, petrol, soap etc etc.

Falcon #2 - Shelf Queen

Parts: About 70% new parts (chassis, wheels, lower and upper arms, trailing arms etc). No screws, drive shafts, steering, front towers, suspension etc)

Shell: none - will have to be a Kamtec replica but I have a set of brand new original decals.

Process: buy many more new parts, spend lots, hunt parts, research etc.

Falcon #3 - rolling chassis

Parts: 99% complete. Some damaged parts to be swapped out.

Shell: honest but rough. It’s gonna stay like this though ;)

Process: Tidy up and use as a reference vehicle for the other 2

So falcon #1 has been through a clean today

Plus all the gearbox parts and screws have been soaking in petrol to try and get the caked grease and crud off them.

So today I finished off Falcon #3

completely stripped down what I had and made sure that each part was the best of the used parts.

1 x suspension Tower was damaged a little as were the front edges of the lower wishbones

gearbox had a few damaged screw mounts for the rear cage so made up a new casing from some of the parts.

these were replaced and the Falcon #1 chassis was also used to create a really nice and honest Falcon.

brand new 540 and pinion gear.

all original radio gear and ceramic resistor. All cables routed nicely.

Front end rebuilt and wheels tidied up

Chassis has been reinforced at the weak points but no damage

Lexan replica shell arrived today for Falcon #2

not a bad replica but a few flaws in the area under the wing and the cut lines are almost non-existent so marked them as well as I was able.

i used the other 2 shells for reference.

Cutting is always a PITA for some reason but the falcon shell is a whole other league.... who designed this shape ha

lots of time and v careful trimming with a mix of Stanley, craft and scissors and it was done.

the Lexan kit comes with the window masking kit do not long till I start that.

i have a metallic graphite/black I used for my comical hornet and it looks lovely so will use that again. I’m not gonna do any s*******y masking and painting of the red and just gonna rely on the stickers.

the question is, do I use the original sticker set or the replica set (and sell the originals to support the build costs)

thoughts??

And here it is in an all black stealth look

(Lexan looks cloudy as the paint cools the plastic and it’s late and humid outside so there is a little condensation on the outer shell)

Some more work on Falcon #2

gearbox treated to ball bearings

utilised a brand new resistor plate to mount a resistor cover (no resistor as I’ll be running an ESC and 2.4ghz but wanted a retro look)

and then ive fitted the brand new front bumper and have a brand new torque tuned 540 waiting for an 18T pinion.

Its now 1:34am so off to bed (just glad my shed is so warm)

Falcon #2 3D printed front suspension towers arrived today.

really nicely made and I love the 3D printed look

they have extra strengthening at the point they normally fail

Potentially - it’s a modern take on a retro car anyway. It’s my ReRe Falcon.

So I think you are right.

Got the front end set up closer to completion (I’m avoiding doing the suspension at the moment) with the 3D printed parts on - and I quite like them. Engineering on show up front.

VYKx6Qi.jpg

and got the rear end fitted with the torque tuned...

I’ve not been home much this weekend so it’s been a light touch today.

Ok so I went to start with the repro stickers and the colour watch is soooooo poor I couldn’t use them and be happy :(

...the red on the repro is very pinky

MTzGwfR.jpg

I’ve gone minimalistic though on stickers and placement....

cVc8nXE.jpg

yNRhXT7.jpg

I’m quite happy with the results so far.

I’m missing headlights - need to keep my eye out unless they are the same as another model - help anyone?!

Done a little more on the build (running out of screws and washers now though)

rIh2CG9.jpg

I think I need to commit to suspension build now - I really hope I have all the pieces :(

I think the lights are fairly generic across most Tamiya models, maybe someone can actually confirm

Shame about the decals, where are they from?

I've heard of the 'pink' issue with repro decals before, but that was many a year ago.

I have some myself, but have been packed away for that long I can't remember the quality of them.

It's a shame you couldn't use them.

Falcon Z parts.

Spot on mtbkym01. Pretty much a standard light for Tamiya.

Pt#X8428, 0225001, 10225001 or 54626.

I noted that the hornet set are the same

however I like without

Potentially considering some aftermarket 1/10 ones - sacrilege I’m sure

This evening i assembled the front wishbones and some additional bits on the rear end.

2qxR5PI.jpg

in been waiting for fitting these as I had zero of the 3mm slim nuts so had to order and wait for them to arrive. (I’ve ordered a lot from jadlam and luckily everything always gets here really quick)

 c7jjxhz.jpg

still using all new parts - rear body mounts and hub carriers.

TOkd11M.jpg

yirNtt5.jpg

upper and lower wishbones all still packaged.

Reinforced hub/stub axles (don’t know why they are called uprights) plus new screw pins.

EtJodIr.jpg

Although I have tamiya grease, I like to use singer sewing machine oil and it lasts and gives a much better coating (plus you get loads)

vGMxkr8.jpg

...I use it to lube my drone motor bearings mainly.

More new parts...

MUewfYf.jpg

But it’s all coming together nicely (still haven’t braved the suspension but I’m quite confident the damper pack plus the 2 extra springs is all I need) - tomorrows job I promise ;)

Great looking build and your pictures are really high quality. A pleasure to see those shiny clean parts in high definition.

Are your repro decals likes these? I'll take them off you for my Falcon homage.

Falcon was my first car, but I wouldn't run one now, and not into shelf queens (but I love the work you have done), so I built this. The shell needs doing again after a run in with a staffie after this pic was taken.

dunno - really hard to tell....much more pink than the bright red of the originals

is that on a TT-02b chassis?

Its v cool

I have a load of cars. most are for the joy of building them but i have a buggy and a monster truck to drive.

my main driver is a tt-02b neo scorcher running brushless and 3s LiPO (i have a "me" thread in general to see all the other cars i have.

Either way if you want to sell them on, I'll take them. The body needs a refresh and I think I can do a better job on it, but still not worth wasting original decals.

Its a 2010 DT02 Holiday buggy (to get the yellow wheels). I sold the body, and put a sand viper shell on it and bought the yellow CVAs. The rest is all stock. Its a missile with 5200kv motor and its never broke any of the drive train, just a c hub.
