Post your TA02-T's Trophy Trucks

Recommended Posts

Out of blue have developed an interest in these.  Whatever the reason I do not know.  Likely my love of old mini trucks and these just capture the dimensions well relative to others.  Anyways would love to see pics of peoples Trophy Trucks, mods etc.

Here are a couple. Both bodies are TBG, the decals on the Toyota are TBG, the ones on the Nissan are a custom set. I also have a Chevy S10 and  Ford F-150. I’ll need to get some pics up.

I love these trucks - although for someone with so much love, I never seem to run them!  I think the dimensions are perfect and I'd absolutely love to do a race class with these.

I decided to paint my F150 in street colours and build it as a sort of scale trail truck.  This was way back when any other kind of trail bar a CC01 had to be home-built.  It was great on the trails.  I fitted Manta Ray shock towers and long shocks with soft springs to increase the suspension travel.  I used to take it for walks with me often.  It's currently in pieces pending a thorough going over of my collection.

I've also got a Desert Fielder which is currently wearing a Brat hardbody.  Not sure if I'll keep the Brat out of convenience or paint up the Fielder in some custom race colours.

Here are some pics:

Very much love these trucks too, mine is probably far to beaten up to date show a picture of. These are also huge amounts of fun if you swap out the arms for manta ray arms. Combined with the short dampers (preferably cc01 or gf01 alloy dampers) on the stock towers seems to give an incredibly lush suspension that seems to just float across the ground on the stock tires.

@Mad Ax That looks brilliant! The way the suspension looks whilst being tucked up under the body looks so scale. Super nice!

Apologies for my ignorance, but couldn't you build something like this on any touring car chassis? Would a TT02 would be good given you have all the TT02B shock tower and arm options? Get a repro shell or one of the 1/10 oroline or j concepts monster truck bodies with a similar wherlbase and there you go?

Thanks, yes it all came together very well.  With the longer shocks and a body lift, the wheel tuck was just perfect.  The F150 is one of those rare Tamiya bodies where the arches are actually the right size for the tyres.  It was my first scale truck and I'd intended to do so much more with it, but as is always the way with these projects other things come along and it falls by the wayside.

You could probably do this with a TT02 chassis and TT02B shock towers, although I don't know how much extra suspension travel would be allowed by the balls on the arms.  IIRC the TT02 uses a ball joint to mount the steering hub directly to the arms, and the balls will probably have a limit to their travel.  The TA02T uses a separate upright and steering hub assembly so there's very little restriction in upward travel (CV joints are necessary to get full travel).  As always, it would be a case of "try it and see"

A TT02 also has a full-length touring chassis, so you'd be limited to those truck bodies that are touring length.  I'm sure there are a few out there.  However the TA02T is a mix of TA01 and TA02 parts to give a shorter wheelbase for these trophy truck bodies.  The Brat body on my Desert Fielder is shorter still, but it fits fine with flipped rear arms.

Built this from leftover TA parts a while back.  It uses Hummer a-arms so the stance is wider and wheelbase is longer.  Handles a bit better than a stocker due to the wider stance.  Looks a little out of proportion, but like I said, just built from spares one day when I was bored.  I would love an original F150 or S10, probably wouldn't run it much but they just look so cool.

@87lc2 could you flip your rear arms to fix the wheelbase issue?

Yes, of course.  Performance is much better the way it is though, the extra width and wheelbase really help it turn much better without tipping over.  I rarely run the truck, but when I do it's usually on asphalt and it's much more stable the way it is than the original setup.  I do agree it doesn't look as good as the original though.

Isn't that basically what the TT-02T Sandshaker is?

The TT02 might be a good candidate for this if Tamiya would just put some realistic bodies on it.

Love the thread, another TA02-T fan here !    I keep coming back to them and swapping wheels, suspension & body too, it's a great platform for the whole change with the season thing as mentioned, (see my showroom).  Right now, my runner has a Brat body and HSP rally tyres on the stock platform but this is all about the -T so here is my F-150.

Very interesting. What is that driveshaft from? I’ve never seen one like that on a TA-02 before? I would like to get one.

The drive shaft is from a TB-03 as is the front drive cup. The rear drive cup is a modified Frog cvd. Its a tight fit on the TA-02 but in the end I have a slight amount of clearance. I plan on making another one in the near future and will try to get some good documentation.

Suede your truck looks really good, I have never been a fan of these because of the narrow track width but with the wider a-arms it looks awesome. Could you post a few more chassis pictures please? I'm assuming you have just used DF01 parts to widen the track? Do these use the short chassis tub? I'm interested in building one myself now.

Thanks.

Thank you. Yes you are correct short chassis and DF-01 or Top Force arms. The wide a- arms made the wheel base adout 6-8 mm shorter than the original. Trying to find a way to correct this but no stock arms correct the problem. It is still a blast to drive as is though. Radio control car action did a hop up article on this many years ago thats where I got the idea and have been modifying ever since.

Meant to say top one is TT02-T and bottom one is XV01-T
