Paint vs decals

Recommended Posts

Hi guys I’m interested to know if anyone has attempted to paint on the orange, orange and yellow stripe colour scheme on their hornet as after a while the decals always tend to start peeling and if so how successful was this venture

It is possible, of course, and better painters than me must have done it (I have certainly seen more complex paintjobs than the Hornet's rendered in paint in threads here), but remember that it would be quite hard to get the edges straight and in the correct proportions, whether painting with a brush or airbrushing. The upside is that if you got it right it'd be set for the life of the shell. The downside is that if you made a mistake, you'd be stuck with it for the life of the shell. It depends on how confident you are with paints, as I am sure it can be done with enough practice.

If you want to know what is possible with enough time and skill, see @Truck Norris's Porsche 959 shell paintjob thread here:

It would definitely be an awesome thing to achieve the most difficult things to do would be getting the stripes correct and precisely applying the paint around the curves specifically the ones on the right hand side where the original style body was made to fit the servo control for the speed controller and up over the rear of the body and keeping it all in proportion correctly then masking up the stripe graphic accurately from the inside to apply the black primary colour but it would look amazing if it could be achieved to perfection

Very cool perhaps I will have to obtain another body and attempt this I have visions of trying this failing epically and jumping up and down on my disappointing masterpiece

what i have done in the past is get a piece of traceing paper and copy the decals then transfer to a masking sheet cut out and apply to the inside to the shell but remember when copying the decal the direction the masking has to be applyed to the shell i have used this on my escort shell in the past.

as for matching the colours i would take the decal sheet to your lhs and try and get the best match

While it is not an easy task, half of this hobby is about trying to achieve the goal you want.

For something complicated like Hornet, I'd try @topforcein's tracing method.

If I were new to this, I wouldn't expect my result to look anything like @Truck Norris's.  He's the best I've seen, after years of experience. (I mean his experience of painting, not my experience of seeing ;))

You may know this already, but there is another kind of masking tape that might come in handy for you.  You can look up "Tamiya masking tape for curves."  These feel like electrical tape (instead of black, these are white). They seal better, so you get less of the paint infiltration.  But for straight lines, paper masking tape is whole lot better.  Good luck!

When decals peel, apply heat gun / or hair dryer to them.. and smooth over with hand and it will become sticky again.

Oh, that reminds me of a video... a Japanese guy also.  He put the stickers on the inside.

He basically put the sticker on the side where there is no adhesive.  He did use something. But all I remember was "that can't be good."  But it did look good. (I've seen a lot of stuff, so I cannot find where I've seen it)

If you have a steady hand you can cut each sticker into separate colors and use them as masks to paint. You use the left sticker on the right side. Then you spray each color, then peel the next stripe and change colors. Hopefully you understand what I'm saying, it's early and I haven't finished my coffee.

Australian buddy @Max Power has got to be one of the finest Lexan detail painters I have ever seen. His Hornet stripes are second to none!

He also did the stock black version, bit I can't seem to find it anywhere.
