I have the catalogs from 1968 to 2005, with the exception of 1969, 1970 and 1971, and non of my catalogs look like the one in the pic, so I would believe it's either 1969, 1970 or 1971.

The catalog can not be older than 1969 for the following reason:

The real Lola Mk. III (the car with the "P" on the cover) debuted in 1966, whereas the Lotus 49 (formula car low on the cover) wasn't introduced before 1967 and the Matra MS11 (formula car on top of cover) not before 1968.

Just a thought, but most of the Tamiya RC catalogues have a copyright in the margins on one of the last few pages in the book. This includes the date of the copyright, and therefore the release year of the catalogue.

I dont know if yours will have this, but its worth a look.

You're of course right, but many (all?) of the old pre-1973 Tamiya catalogs don't have any information about the year at all, so I would be surprised if this one has.

Miramar, you are right, there is no copyright mark in this catalog.

BTW, this example is close to mint ! And it includes an insert with what seems to be "last minute" updtaes of models, that did ot make it to the printing of the catalog.

One of the models featured in the insert is a 1/6 Big Scale series Honda CB750 Four (BS 0601) (first Big Scale 1/6 MC model, i guess ?)

Maybe you can determine what age new RL cars/bikes etc. were in those days.

The catalogue must be younger than the new cars then.[;)]

Good suggestion... so I searched the web and found that the Honda CB750 Four were introduced in 1968/69 (different information here and there...) So, that leads me to believe that this catalog is 1970 issue.

I don't think Tamiya would have waited more than a year before introducing their model of this ground breaking Honda MC.

OR ?

He he, if it contains models of WOII, the catalogue must be from 1940 or something...[;)]

Not from the 60's though..."we" bombed the factory of Tamiya, still feel sorry for that...[:I]

Ok, now seriously: the F1-cars are easy to determine from those days.

On EBay you can find NIB-kits from that age, I suppose.

Good luck, curious myself.

That's exactly what I did in my first post in this thread! The Matra MS11 is the newest of the cars on the cover (in real life) and as it debuted in 1968 with J.P.Beltoise (also the driver on Tamiya's model), the catalog can't possibly be older than that. As I have the 1968 catalog myself and know it looks differently, the catalog must be newer than 1968. As I have all catalogs from 1972 to 2005, I know it can't be from that period either. Leaves just 1969, 1970 and 1971!

Miramar, whats on the front cover of your 1968 catalogue? Or better still could you post a photo of it? I also have an old catalogue (different to larbuts) with no year on it. I'll try to post some pics soon.

Cheers

I don't have a pic of the 1968 catalog, but I will see if I can make one.

I have dug a little deeper and found out that Tamiya introduced their kit of the Honda CB750 in 1970, so that should leave only 1970 and 1971 as possible years for Larbut's catalog.

Thank you guys, you are all a big help :-)

1970 or -71 is close enough for me, but if anyone can pinpoint the year, I will be very happy. !

Thank you, everyone (and especially miramar)!

I would guess 1971, as the layout of the cover is similar to the 1972 catalogue - and tamiya change the covers slightly each year...

If you want to see my overview of other catalogues, go here http://www.killerkip.be/tcat.htm

Don't have this one, though... If you're willing to sell... But I suppose you're not :P

Killerkip:

No, i do not think I will sell, it is in such great condition that I will hang on to it.

Nice web, by the way, although a few of the catalog pictures would not load (1974, 73, 72, 71... the interresting ones...) ;-)

Take a look at my site, not updated for a few weeks, but I have plans for new layout and muc more info. I just wish my application for "34 hours a day" soon will be granted :P

Thank you !

That's because I don't have those catalogues, therefor no pics :P

Larbut, by coincidence I stumbled upon some information that with some additional information that I already had may be just what's needed to pinpoint the exact year of your catalog (1970 or 1971), but first I have to ask you a few questions (if you don't mind?):

Is the 1/700 Waterline Series represented in the catalog?

Is the 1/48 Aircraft Series represented in the catalog?

Is the "German Afrika Korps" in the 1/35 Military Miniatures Series listed?

If yes (actually even just one "yes" to any of the three questions would suffice), then it has to be the 1971 catalog, otherwise the only remaining posibiltiy is 1970, for reasons explained in previous posts.

Posted

Thanks Miramar, the answer to all your three questions is NO, so that makes the catalogue a 1970 issue !

Thank you all very much for your help, it has been fun following the thorough investigation that has been goning on :-)
