Asterion/ChevyS10/XV01-T

Recommended Posts

Well here goes.

IMG_1589.JPG.0c692cc2586e953ce960e4997ef50e1d.JPG

All the bits I need to start are here. Just waiting for Sticker set from MCI. What we have is an Asterion on the XV01-T chassis. It will be basically stock apart from a silver sport tuned motor. Appearence wise I'm going retro with Chevy S10 stickers. Ive had the red flash changed to black as I'm going to do the front end red rather than blue. Have bought Cherry red but dont like it at the moment. Need to test it on some scrap with different backing colours. Just seems a bit too pink! I have never seen so many plastic washers, shims, spacers etc in one place???? Any way I'm all ready armed with new Tamiya JIS screwdivers etc, all I need to do now is get rid of a 3 day old Migraine:angry:

Yes too pink.  However i've already come up with my first question and I havent turned a screw. I've never built anything with a oil diff, but it looks fairly straightforward. My problem is the Diff oil is supposed to be used for the shocks as well, at least theres no other oil. The oil for the diff is 900 hard?  Is this going to be ok for the shocks? Everything else I've built has used yellow soft?

Looking forward to seeing this one come together. I really enjoyed my XV-01T build, hope you feel up to it soon.

I used the kit oil for the shocks and the diff. It is quite a heavy truck when it is all assembled.

Makes sense.

Parts Bag A. I have to say even though I've only done a bit I love this build. Everything just feels so solid and goes together really well. + its all black ( well apart from the funny coloured suspension arms) No reds greens clears just good old black. Anyway here are the first piccies.

Parts bag B & C. All gone together without fuss apart from the two screws that hold rear gearbx together. They would not go in far enough so out came the tap and die set. Soon sorted. The only other issue I have is one metal shim left over. Double checked every thing and cant find if its been missed. Just run the motor straight off a battery to check for rattles/clicks and boy is it smooth, as is the steering. All ballraced and no slop at all. Lovely. No pictuers of contents of bag B as battery went on camera and I wanted to start building.IMG_1596.JPG.2be28b4c8c7074b6ed80a3ae0a0efd03.JPGIMG_1597.JPG.4173e422c6e5bef9a3406d6cc192f9c7.JPGIMG_1598.JPG.8285eac8ffad2361da2160bcbbb4e319.JPGIMG_1599.JPG.e8c8d08183f92d7ed260b6fe32b62c52.JPGIMG_1600.JPG.33c92524f57881c1da394143740a4193.JPGIMG_1601.JPG.95943dc05ca848c9281d35295e823589.JPGIMG_1602.JPG.3b2acf1ec51d7b8ea4ec39582f481d88.JPGIMG_1603.JPG.31575d12047c7ecd3690f693668a5016.JPGIMG_1604.JPG.9898926058fc399f084a59894e9a8975.JPGIMG_1605.JPG.c6666d2584194086413ac16bb59b1529.JPGIMG_1606.JPG.db0c72ae2f133e348165e543640450a3.JPGIMG_1607.JPG.a3842e9c769aeddf1a6a93c63a22f78c.JPGIMG_1608.JPG.ac65ecbd4139fe9d9e4e5490ad0c8ab7.JPGIMG_1609.JPG.760051d035219a210cff2d05e800152c.JPG

In the last three you can see the soft plastic suspension arms in grey. Apparently they are the same dimensions as the rally chassis but made of softer plastic to make them less liable to crack?

Rear gear box and drive belt next:)

I've beeen pleaseantly surpised at this build. Despite all the little spacers etc its all gone together really well. I only have two issues. The first is that the left hand rear suspension has more play in it that the right even though they are identical. I have plenty of shims spacers to play with so shouldnt be too difficult to sort. The other problem is the shocks. They went together really easily. Using the pit stand to hold them whilst filling etc makes life a lot easier. The problem is the length of the springs. Even with the largest tension adjuster on each shock the spring is loose. So much so that part V5 can slip off if not sitting on its wheels. Is is right to have to use several spacers to sort this out. Also the spring and oil combination seems extremely stiff?

Electrics next. Not my favourite bit but needs must!!

I had a similar issue with my shocks but after some fiddling they seemed to settle down. I couldn't work out what I had / hadn't done that had made the difference!

I've looked at some official Tamiya videos and if you look carefully it seems as though they have the large tension adjuster fitted. I ve just ordered a set of springs in 3 different settings to see if I can play around with it

And I was doing so well. Just roughly installled electrics to centre servo etc. As it was up on a stand I thought I'd check the motor etc. Problem is despite the directional arrow on the silver sport tuned motor seemingly going in the right direction full throttle is only available in reverse? Im using a TBLE02s . Ive tried reversing the cables, and reversing the throttle setting on the transmitter but no change. Should I go through the esc set up again from scratch?

I have one of these too!

Enjoyed the build, although there was quite a lot to do and lots of parts.

I didn't like how the body is cut high and gappy, so left mine a bit longer at the front to make a bumper look. I also find the truck grip roles quite easily on some surfaces, it is fairly tall and narrow. But it has the potential to handle really well I feel, if you can get it on the right surface, it wants something that will let it drift and slide a little, but not dig in.

I haven't found any alternative tyres either, the stock ones look great, but are a bit hard.

My biggest gripe is the battery tray!!!! It is really difficult to fit a regular LiPo in there, you really need one made up to be like NiMh stick pack. Hobbyking do or at least did offer these. But it's a real pain. And even worse, you need a flipp'n screwdriver to open the battery cover, which you need to do in order to plug or unplug the battery. Awful design and never really mentioned in the reviews I read. I ended up ruining a battery as I failed to take a screw driver with me and completely forgot about when I got home. The electronic switch for the ESC then drained the battery flat :(

I've only run mine with a 9T brushless setup on 2S Lipo. It's a little rocket and even on grass will match my Arrma Raider BLX 1/8th buggy for speed.

Hope you get yours sorted and running soon. :)

I guess you swapped the wires and tried it before you reversed the servo ?  if you've done both operations together you would have cancelled out the reversing proceedure

The prize goes to @KEV THE REV or at least I think so. First of all I got a sliver can out, had to solder banana plugs on, and tried that to see if it made any difference. It worked fine so re installed the sport tuned with the wires as they should be and bingo. I think sometimes the reverse doesnt happen immediatly and if you pull the trigger too soon it doesent work. Anyhow it now does, BUT had to strip rear gear box as back wheels werent going round:angry:. The pin that goes through the pulley shaft that the internal gear keys onto had somehow come out!! Maybe i let it loose as I was putting the two halves together, I will never know. Anyhow 45 mins later all stripped, refitted + a tiny shim that I found to make sure and its all back together and running as it should. Might even get round to installing the steering servo now which was all I was intending to do..Hobbies dont you just love them:D

I agree about the body. I'm going to do the same at the front. Just got a set of Chevy S10 stickers from MCI to do retro style. I was trying to stop your vid to get a look at your scheme but it just kept going!!!. I'm using the Chevy S10 tyres which I think are almost the same as the kit ones. They may be slightly softer.I think its best surface will be slightly loose old tarmac, but i agree I think it needs to slide. . I agree about the screw driver  I did wonder anout tring to find a slot head screw for the compartment and open the slot to take a 5p but I think its too small.though I use NiMh's so no issues there.

Thought I saw a flash of yellow!! Still got the servo to install on mine and finish off tying up the cables etc but thought I'd start on the body. Have gone retro with a twist. Based on Chevy S10 theme but with reds converted to black, Ive done the front end in Cherry red

Now its on with the white I really like it. I'm using a combination of Asterion ( grill, lights rtc) with the S10 decals. Sort of a road legal version. Had to paint in indicators for the front lights!

Takes  a little longer with MCI decals as theres no numbers !! You can see in the last picture the deeper front valence. Am going to do the rear deck in a flat gunmetal on the outside. Just need to do a trial on some scrap. With a bit of luck I should have her up and running by the end of the week.

A neater job than I managed on the shell!

I was pleasently surprised with th result. Did it outside on the patio this afternoon!!!  Made sure the cans were warm and it came out OK. Frankly I'm not a fan of painting the inside of the shell so any compliments are much appreciated:). Now finished the stickers. As I said have used a combination of Asterion and Chevy S10 to give it a road legal look. For some reason forgot to paint the back panel a darker colour to show off the stickers better but by the time I realised I could'nt be bothered to take all the stickers off. Just the servo and body posts to do then she's ready for a run hopefully at the weekend

I must admit I love pickups in general but this is one of my favourites.

I like your treatment of the grille and valence.

It should cover the main issue with this truck (to my eyes), the gap between body and chassis at the front.

I would love a more scale-looking bash plate / bar arrangement but that would likely mean some serious fabrication to apply it to the XV-01T.
