Lunchbox body mounts mod

Recommended Posts

So I have a lunchbox and I'm planning to fit another shell, ideally a vw beetle to have a monster beetle look. Has anybody fitted alternative shells to their lunchbox and if so how did you mount it? Do tamiya make any alternative body mounts for the grasshopper or hornet? (I believe they share the same chassis as a lunchbox)

I did find this on ebay but its quite expensive especially if it doesn't end up working! https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/233143292696?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=710-134428-41853-0&mkcid=2&itemid=233143292696&targetid=594026702630&device=m&mktype=pla&googleloc=1007016&poi=&campaignid=6619152149&mkgroupid=84510982488&rlsatarget=pla-594026702630&abcId=1140496&merchantid=138818108&gclid=CjwKCAiA_MPuBRB5EiwAHTTvMQSahx26ACJDlq9AE9CRWJTzeXrs5huPfjroxsBchDZhXdWi8uPVXhoC_vQQAvD_BwE

Download the manuals of the mentioned cars and compare, lunchbox isn't quite the same chassis it does share parts.

Other bodies in the LB chassis are the Pumpkin, Pajero, Unimog

You need 1/12 bodies so there aren’t many options available.  HPI used to make nice bodies for the Wheely king that fit, Bolink also made Digger bodies that included a 1/12 VW. TBG also does some 1/12. Team Associated’s crawlers are also 1/12 as are the HPI Savage XS bodies. You  can also find lots of 1/12 hard bodies on eBay from non-Hobby grade kits. As for body mounts, just pick up some long  vertical  mounts and you can use the same holes on the chassis or drill new ones and cut them to length. They are easy to find on eBay.

Good luck with your search.

There is a Quick Drive Beetle shell that is 1/14th scale that has now been re-re'd as MB trail , so a re-re shell should be available if you can't find an original QD body . I built a modded QD Pumpkin and it now has the same wheelbase as a 1/12th Pumpkin so you should be able to get away with the Beetle shell . There are a variety of magnetic body mounting kits out there , or an easy fabrication from the original mount points should be possible

I actually wanted the opposite. I was going to put a lunchbox body on my Savage XS.  I instead found a New Bright Grave Digger on eBay for about 15 bucks. Even came with working lights.  I think it would probably fit the lunchbox too.
