First with the news again is that the next Tamiya vintage re-release will be the Frog in a couple of months.

I was right about the Grasshopper and Lunch Box info I gave a few months back and this comes from the same source.

Dear Santa (or Mr Tamiya as you are known here)

Please, please, please, please, please, please, please make loads of spare diffs and drive shafts and put them on sale before the Frog.

Frog rerelease would be nice, but a Monster Beetle release would rule. Or a Brat. Could just get a Brat shell to the Frog ofcource.

Maybe someone will have to persuade Specialist Turned Parts to start producing their plastic hex driveshafts again. They used to last forever.

I would say that *if* the Frog is re-released, the next issue after that would 95%+ be the Monster Beetle.

I just have some difficulty believing Tamiya *would* reissue the Frog given the well known problems with the drive train on it - unless they did a Frog II with some major mods at the back end.

I hope it does get re-released then maybe my boss will leave me alone about restoring one[:(!], which afer this little rumour wont be happening for a while(or until it re-release then a can build NIB one [;)])

I want the same Frog I got back when I was 9 for X-mass. I dont care that the spider gears/half shafts always strip or the suspesnion cant compete with a Team Losi of today. If I wanted that I would buy a more recent car. I Own 2 Wild Willys and love anything Jeep but have not bought a Wild Willy 2 becasue 1 the grill looks like a ford grill and it just does not have the same feel. If the make any changes to the Frog it wont be worth buying for me anyway. I have a spare 3 MSC that I plan to put in the re-release if it comes out and has a ESC just becasue IMHO it should still have the MSC with the 2 resistors.

if its re-released with mods to the rear, could tamiya use the kingblackfoot/bushdevil gearbox as this fits the chassis? be a bit lame if it had wishbones at the back though[?]

they could do that. a few members here have mounted kb rear ends onto monster beetles and blackfoots in order to get them going again without the dreaded gearbox troubles!

but in my opinion it would be pretty lame if tamiya did that with a re release frog [;)]

the rear A arms are what gives this chassis its character. i always thought it was called a frog because the rear suspension kinda resembles frogs legs! [:P]

could tamiya not resolve the differential "issues" by chrome plating the bevel and planet gears[?] the juggernaut 2 (and the txt-1 and the dump truck) has chrome plated bevels, to stop the metal gears wearing, as the chrome provides a hard surface to the gears. if that could be done with the frog style gears and shafts then they might last a bit longer [:)]

The gears survive fine as long as the gearbox sides don't "spread".

They start skipping once the gearbox case can't hold them together

in mesh, then all that hammering kills 'em.

Gearbox side panels needs to be reinforced, either by

thicker alu or redesigning the reinforcing gussets.

Always wondered why nobody made gearbox panels out of carbonfibre.

Not the easiest job, but definitely cool.

Agreed, the problem is not the gears, but the weak metal the gearbox side plates were made of.

Shipping the re-re Frog with a ball diff would cure most of the rear end problems with the diff seperating, since there would be a screw through it holding it together.

Since the bevel and planetary gears in the diff are still all available new, I'd say the diff is going to be the same one though, but the sides of the gearbox or even the whole gearbox housing would be different.

I find that the hexagonal driveshafts are fine if they are properly maintained and lubricated by packing with grease. They key is keeping the dirt out with the rubber boots. I hope they do retain the hexagonal shafts with boots.
