Loving this thread.......provides inspiration for me and hopefully others. I have plenty of nitro projects to complete at some stage including the standard TNX this beast was started from.

So I had a go at the engine this afternoon but the power went off for three hours so killed any follow on work.

Got the engine cleaned and stripped apart

IMG-5833.jpg

Most of it has cleaned up ok however I now need to blast a few parts in my blasting cabinet

IMG-5834.jpg

and things like the crankshaft will need a careful clean with the dremel and then some polishing

IMG-5835.jpg

I will also be replacing the front and rear bearings in the crankcase. When the bearings are out the outer surface of the crankcase will be blasted as well

Usually you leave old bearings while blasting to protect the seats, even if you dont blast into them its a bit of secure event.

I have a bolt with washers that I use to cap off the ends when blasting. Its only a low pressure home cabinet but works quite well on the outer surfaces.

Smart Idea,

I dont know what attachment you use on the dremel for the crankshafts but I would think some scotchbrite should clean up the surfaces nicely or very fine sandpaper

Mainly the inside pocket on the crankshaft I then use micro mesh on the rest of it

oh I got you, a dremel attachment is perfect for getting into the crank inlet.

Did they use the standard RTR body and not a custom painted one on this race truck? I find that interesting because pro racers almost always have their own paint scheme.

Standard body with a few mods like a rear wing. There is a picture further up the thread.

Love the build! As a fan of the 801x series I've learned to love anything Tamiya nitro!

Me too. I have 23 left and I have one of all the Tamiya nitro kits.

So today I rebuilt the engine. Used my blasting cabinet and then wet and dry with Micromesh to finish and got all the parts to a useable state.

Exhaust manifold turned out nicely

IMG-6403.jpg

And if you followed my other threads the assembly was a reverse of what i did previously. I fitted new bearings inside the crankcase. I use a Hudy bearing press to remove the old and fit the new.

IMG-6406.jpg

The filter housing was washed and cleaned and refitted.

IMG-6407.jpg

and I also then fitted the Ofna starter backplate. This needs a TR-15T one way bearing to fit the SR18.

IMG-6408.jpg

just got to put the manifold on and the engine mount and then she will be in the TNX.

Also got the rear MIP CVD kit fitted.

IMG-6409.jpg

Fitted the RX

IMG-6410.jpg

and the exhaust

So sweet!

Slowly getting there. Engine is now mounted and connected to the exhaust with new silicone. Will finish off connecting up the electrics this week and put that to bed. Put one set of the Proline wheels together and they look great.

I think next will be the shocks, taking them apart and sorting them out to go back on. Just ordered some new mounting bolts as the Tamiya ones are 48mm long and I didn't have any spares that size.

Started doing some research on other parts I need for the car. Firstly the RX pack. It was a Peak Racing Blitz 1200mah 6v pack part number PEK4033. The search has begun!

s-l1600-1.jpg

and the glow plug was a O Donnell Racing 77S which typically has been superseded over the years. Hopeful to find new old stock!

I know the lexan rear wing size as its recorded in the setup notes 1/2 x 7" so I need to get a piece cut and then size up the Tamiya Logo. I can always get that made so no issues there.

Progress!

I almost bought this about a 100x, then almost bought the Nitrage, than I finally got a 801xt. Still want the Nitrage!

I have a Nitrage to restore in the Queue, need a chassis plate and cant find one. I dont have the 801XT yet but its on the list.

Still suffering from a cold this week so progress has been slow!

The chassis currently looks like this, getting there.

IMG-6432.jpg

Go the electrics all in and sealed, now just looking for the correct RX pack as mentioned

IMG-6434.jpg

Drilled the chassis for the fuel filter and mounted it. Noticed I had the starter backplate on the wrong way round and sorted that as well. I presumed that the Tamiya race team had used the starter shaft down the side of the chassis as it cleared the shock tower but they used a hole in the bulkhead to pass the starter shaft through. Exhaust tubing is all on and cable tied up.

IMG-6435.jpg

Mounted both the shocks on all 4 corners after stripping, cleaning and refilling them. I need to find the correct springs to replace the yellow ones but for now these will do. In 2005 David Jun used both shocks on some tracks and just the main shocks on others. I have decided to fit both for looks. Got some nice new hardware to fit them. Not 100% accurate but look the part. I dont have a picture of what was used anyway!

IMG-6433.jpg

So moving forward I will get the tank cleaned and fitted, find and fit some body mounts and then finish off the front end. I'm going to do the original TNX front driveshafts because in early 2005 that's what was on the race truck. Later in 2005 they used the MIP prototype driveshaft set.

I have all 4 tyres mounted now so just need to order some new black 5mm wheel nuts.

Found the grey body mounts in a UK modelshop stock so ordered them, hard to find in grey and not many about. The race car used white nylon body spacers on the bodyposts so did some measuring based on the body post size and appearance. Nylon washers have a set size pattern globally so ordered four 7mm ID x 22mm OD washers from Ebay. No need to pay RC car body washer prices, these were less than a pound.

Washers-ISO-7093-part-1-DIN-9021-in-Nylo

Tank is ready to be cleaned now so should get that fitted Sunday. Ordered some fuel tube clips as the race car has some fitted to keep the hoses together.

Progress!

Worked on the tank today. Starting point

IMG-5843.jpg

Firstly removed the lid decal and straightened the plunger using boiling water. I turn the tack upside, suspend in boiling water from a kettle for a few mins then rinse under cold water. Then I washed the outside of the tank.

The inside gets a clean using warm water and denture cleaner. Left it for 30mins

IMG-5844.jpg

Then taken apart, rinsed and dried.

Refitted in the TNX it looks the part. I added the fuel tubing just need the clips to arrive for that now. The decal is one I had printed on a sheet. I got fed up of buying overpriced Tamiya ones so made my own.

Body mounts now fitted with the replacement screws. I just need to get the body washers and then cut them off at the right height. The fuel tube clips arrived and I have placed them where Tamiya seem to have on the race truck. Just need a few bits now and then I can build up the front driveshafts, fit them and put the wheels and tyres on.

After that, RX battery pack and glow plug pending its just the body to do.....nearly there.

This build is absolutely sensational! Not a massive nitro fan, but this! You can’t help not be! Fair play to your level of detail! :D

Thanks for the kind words, good to hear feedback on them.
