hi all, someone mentioned this before but i couldnt find the thread, so heres my first offering. after much stress with the plastic primer eating into the shell and a brake fluid session, i finally admited defeat and painted it again as it is. the finish is very orange peely due to the texture created in the plastic by the primer[:(], but i intend to "drive it like i stole it" so i figgured it wasn't the end of the earth. pics of my sons 'mystery machine' to follow when i get it finished, not origional idea i know but its what he realy wanted. heres my 7up/bp truck anyway, apart from the texture whats the verdict?

I think the 7Up livery suits the body extremely well! If you don't mind a suggestion, I would say that a further "detailing" with a little white or light blue could look great. I think I would add a few white bubbles/foam around the lower edges of the body. Random size white circular stickers "hovering" above a white and light blue "sea" (like sparkling 7Up) maybe? It's difficult to explain with words what I visualise in my head, [:I] but maybe you get the idea. Anyway, you can safely leave it as it is too, cause it looks really good.[:D]

I think that the 7 up livery suits it too. If you want to do something about the orange peel, you could go over it gently with some T-Cut or Rubbing Compound and then finish it off with a car wax, works a treat..

Also, see http://www.acme.com/licensemaker/ - I think it would look cool with a personal plate. You can print them on an inkjet printer and then put some clear tape over the top to waterproof them.

Why not wet sand and spray a second then wer sand spray a third coat on it? That will give you a nicer finish and after detail paints and decals hit it with clear gloss?

thought about flatting off and various ways to lose the texture, but would need to be very carefull not to lose the details like handles/gutters etc, etc. if it was going to be a shelf queen then i'd make more effort but i'm gonna run it so its going to get marked and knocked anyway. the rear plate is made from a small piece of 1/1 number plate backing and i'll add letters later. glad you all like it, mystery machine just needs the writing putting on, pics soon (much better finish!)

i dont know why you used primer in the first place.

when i painted my lunch box last week i did it as on the box with the tamiya ts-16 yellow. and i just painted that straight onto the shell but i did have to wet flat it a few times due to fish eyes and runs and dust in the the paint but in the end it turned out perfect and the stickers went on beautifully also. so i am know waiting for a price for a new shell and chrome and window parts from my lhs so i can do something really special on it as it will be my show shell.

MYSTERY SOLVED!, its finished! to answer topforcins question, i used primer as i wasn't using tamiya paint and auto paint doesnt bond directly to plastic and without primer will flake off very easily. im very happy with the finished mystery machine and so's my kid. i susspect it wont look like this for long though, he drives fairly well but he's only 6 and his bush devil has seen some hammer over the last year! anyway heres the pics....

I always use primer as you get a nice even coat to start with. Also the paint sticks better and you use less of it.

topforcein; "where did you get them roof bars from. i am looking for some spot lights to go on my lunch box"

in reply, the bars were simply made fron plastic box section, glued together then bolted through the roof, dead easy.
