Is this normal? Should I be worried?

Recommended Posts

My darling wife bought me a Neo Scorcher for Xmas. Then as a complete surprise I got a bonus from work. :o

So now I have TWO cars - an M07C with an Alfa Mito body, and assorted bits for the TT02B. Of there's also the vintage Sand Rover that a mate found in his garage, that is now sitting in my garage awaiting cleaning / photoshoot on the weekend.

Three weeks ago I had zero Tamiya cars. Now I have three.

Is this the normal rate of acquisition?

Yes, but it will only increase exponentially from here.

Once you have acquired all the cars you wanted BITD, and then after you have bought others that you have taken a liking to in the mean time...

Sometimes the world just conspires to offer you good deals.

A few years back I had been holding off buying several cars just waiting for the right time.  Then I decided I would do the DT-02 challenge so I ordered a Racing Fighter.  Then I heard through the grapevine that the Novafox was being discontinued and I'd already put off buying one, so I went and placed an order.  I then read that Tamiya had fallen out with BMW over licensing agreements and there were likely to be no more BMW or Mini-bodied cars, so I took the plunge and ordered an M05 Mini Cooper Rally.  IIRC around about the same time a mate offered me something special and one-off, and if I didn't jump on it there and then it would get sold to a stranger and never seen again.  I can't remember what it was but I think I had to pass as I'd already overstretched myself.

It does seem strange that I'll not buy anything at all for 2 months because I'm worried I don't have enough money put by, but then during those two months I'll spend a bit more on work lunches and a bit more on beer and a bit more on nights out with mates and end the month with little more money than I started with.  Then the next month I'll figure "hey, I haven't bought a car for ages, I can buy something" - forgetting that although I didn't buy a car, I didn't exactly save any money either.  And buying one thing seems to open the flood gates and before I know it I've bought 2 or 3...

Depends what you call normal? I class it as very normal but then this is coming from a guy that's just bought his second egress for absolutely no reason at all (never go on Ebay when you have had one to many red wine and a few other alcoholic beverages) and now one week later I'm finding myself looking for another rc buggies on top of a few other rc related products that I have bought and I can't really remember how I paid for them! Or exactly why I bought them:blink: the party season has a lot to answer for:unsure:

I disagree - this is when you learn how to build more shelving, then more shelving, then doing a "clean-up" around the house to get rid of old unwanted clutter to make more room, then filling up your new found space with shelves of RCs... lather, rinse, repeat....!

You were pretending he was a woman? No that's fine. Perfectly normal.

Yeah, I have roughly 31 cars now in various stages of repair/running order.

You may need help.

That's how a lot of the purchases of the past week have happened. Plus I got attracted to the blue shiny aluminium bits for the TT02B. Shiny! Oooh! (clicks BUY button)

Or you convert your garage into a dedicated hobby room

Yeah its deadly!  postie has just dropped off a brushed motor that I must have bought! I've just had to look at my purchase history (again) to see when I actually bought it because for the life of me I couldn't remember.......and I did buy it! It's a nice one though!

As we get more forgetful/senile with age

+ airmail now takes minimum 4-6wks if not 2-3mths

= it's like Xmas everytime something arrives :P

"Hey wow, that's just want I need...!" :D

Only drawback is the 100s of half finished projects lying everywhere for want of a part that's in the mail; some the parts have arrived but some bits have since been stolen for another project now gotta reorder to replace... meh.

My worst trait is ordering something for a project, not getting around to working on said project, then "remembering" that I need something for a project, ordering it again, and as I put it away with the project, spotting the original order already sitting with the project...…...

yep, that's what I'm chalking up to impending senility :P join the club matey!

(Plus most of my ordering gets done at 2am, which don't help.)

So I started making lists :) like a Project Manager.  -_-

Lists in multicolour writing... which requires multi coloured inks.

Multi coloured inks needs multi pens... fountain pens...

.... and now that sparked off another hobby. :blink::wacko:

HAHA :D I'm an architect so I know exactly what you mean. And yes, I make lists too, in colour, with fountain pens.  My latest list is 'things to buy from Jaycar' (Australian electronics store) for the Sand Rover restoration project. Bullet terminals, grommets, M3 screws, M4 self tappers....

Have you started collecting Lamys yet? I've got five Al-Stars so far... and the 'crystal' series inks from Lamy are gorgeous, the grey ("Agate") is my current favourite.

Jaycar actually got stuff to buy? They'd stopped selling any decent copper bullets or spades only silly aluminium crimpon types. Even for electronics stuff haven't found anything I wanted instock recently... I go Altronics these days.

Have never bought metric hardware there, Bunnings have a better range (not much) and for metric buttons in 304 stainless there's specialist fastener places... if  wanted to pay $1/ea. Plan ahead and buy bulk from China or Sheffield, fraction of the price.

err...

Theres probably 5 Alstars on the desk inked up now... regulars are Copper orange (some Robert Oster orange at present), champagne (Konpeki), purple (dark lilac), Green (Quink green)... plus another 3 Safari inked up in red, turquoise, black. I like hopping up Safaris with the smoked AlStar section... yeah weird habit. Plus a few more not inked up. And a few more for spares/parts... y'know how it is.

Lamy Crystal inks are crazy expensive A$30 tiny 30ml bottle!! Obsidian is the best out of the 10... got no time for wishywashy greys, I want black to be blacker than a blackhole! Fallen in love with Platinum Carbon black too.

Lamy, German kids pens & cheap China FPs are my main modern interest; given a choice I'd choose the vintage stuff more like 1950s Snorkel and 1930s Vacumatic. Much more interesting than cartridge/convertors to play with.

Yeah i'm on FPN... ;)

ok ok I went desk to check :) the 5th is Charged Green (washed). Today's Safaris are Vista, neon yellow and Umbra... their sister Neon Coral just went thru the wash, in the drying colander now.

Haven't bought a new Lamy for a while. Bit put off by the trio of macaron colours of Safari in 2019, didn't like a Bronze or the Marron LX either. Meh I'm avoiding LXes altogether.

But am now reminded I've missed getting a Petrol.. darned! Had meant to, life just got too busy in 2018. That omission is gunna be so annoying...

May I ask for a link to the sellers you buy from?
