Quick question 

can u use standard car spray paint from Halfords for body shells?

For the clear, polycarbonate/lexan or similar bodyshells you need to use specific polycarbonate paint or it will flake as soon as it flexes. You spray on the inside of the shell (after carefully washing it with soap and water and leaving it to dry completely), in a room temperature environment. I sprayed one half of my sons Schumacher shell in too cold conditions and it quickly flaked. The paints are sold under the tamiya name as PS, for example a colour code will be PS19 or whatever. There are plenty of non-tamiya brands too which give many more colour choices. But it has to be a polycarbonate paint so it doesn't flake off as soon as it bends a little.

 

That is of course just my opinion, others may disagree.

For no lexan no it will crack/flake. For white plastic "hard shell" you should be fine I have done before without problem (automotive paint). I would try on the inside of the shell first to see there is no chemical réaction between the paint and the plastic.
