My first Willy rebuild

Hi,

 

Picked up a vintage hotshot and wild Willy last week. Never had a Willy before. Just tearing it down at the moment to give it a clean and check. Can’t wait to get this thing going again.

How do I remove the pin holding the wheel hex on?

I'd advise soaking the pin (and the matching hole of course) in WD40 or a penetrating oil for a couple of days first. You really want to be super careful not to break the alloy part as they are extremely fragile. Just tap away at it with the punch gently - take your time - catchy catchy softly monkey

Thanks! I’ll soak them for a good few hours and find something I can use to punch them out. Can I reuse the pins?

No probs :) 

You can indeed - although if you have some spare hex drive pins from pretty much any other rc car you can use these instead, which have the benefit of not needing to be pressed in (and therefore you don't run the risk of breaking the alloy parts reassembling them)

No need to soak it for days, the hex hub is decent aluminium, the bit to be carefull with are the potmetal axle bits (the round ones)

This can just spontaniously happen due to old age and corrosion, keep it away from salty environment.

So be carefull removing the bearing, and as long as there is no need for it don't remove the potmetal parts from the alloy tubes.

So be carefull removing the bearing, and as long as there is no need for it don't remove them from the alloy tubes.

 

I humbly nod in deference to Waterbok - he's absolutely right. The ol' grey cells don't work quite as well as they used to! What I was mixing up in my head was that you want to be careful how you hold the assembly while you try and punch the pin out - if you clamp the bearing or the pot metal part it will probably break. Soak the bearing in penetrating oil before trying to remove it.

u could use a (hardened) steel nail with the pointy end filed flat. just take one with the correct OD

Did exactly that, worked perfectly with no damage. I’ve cleaned everything and started reassembly to see what’s missing. I’ll be pulling it apart again to install ball bearings when they arrive.

Technigold doesn’t fit :rolleyes: but believe it or not, I don’t have a spare silver can!

In the 2nd photo, the plastic spacers between the motor and top plate, I don’t have them so raised the parts to find a couple of plastics that looked right. Anyone got a pic of the proper part?

M38 really needs a vintage 540 with plastic endbell, there's a big ring that seats into the cradle at the other end. The only hopup motor that fits perfectly is the plastic endbell Black Motors.

Then there's the pinion to consider - original is pressed onto shaft.

It's been 2 years since I posted this. I shelved this and fixed the Hotshot. I should put up a post for that car. It ended up putting the technigold in the hotshot instead. I've been thinking about re-visiting the willy again
