Many thanks what would the best way to modify the side panels to get this look?

Bradley

You can either use acrylic sheet about 1mm or polycarbonate/lexan sheet 0.5mm to use to extend the body and create side panels. It would also require using putty for a cleaner look after painting. For display, it would work. But for bashing/racing, those fabricated panels won't last especially when the car crashes.

I would use 1.5mm styrene card to form the mods. as the body is not lexan , it is ABS / Styrene so lexan / poly wouldn't take to the body without a lot of work  . I would back the panel with thin card to reinforce the added panel
