Monster beetle alternative livery’s

Recommended Posts

Holes filled now.  The tops of all 4 wings I’ve removed the moulding marks. The rear lights, number plate holder and nose cone will be glued on this evening.

After first coat of plastic primer the roof holes have vanished but as all ways the front needs extra paint and rubbing down inbetween.  Once the front is good the metallic top coat can be applied

After a few coats of the primer and rubbing down in between I’m happy the filled holes have blended in.

The inside of the body had a coat of satin black yesterday and today a coat of dark grey metallic.  Tomorrow I’ll mask the inside and start putting colour on the outside.  I’ve gone for two tone grey in a scorcher esq scheme which I think blends in with the dark chassis.  The driver figure will be wearing a modern crash helmet head finished in champagne gold. I tend to use Ford paint shades as they seem to have the best variety of colours in Halfords

Masking those side panels was grief!  That needs to dry for a good 3 days now before the clear coat goes on. Otherwise the clear coat dissolves into the colour and ruins the work so far. Driver figure nearly finished also.  My eyes struggle these days with the painting of small details.  Not as neat as it could be, looks effective held in place though.

Hang in there buddy..   I struggle with paint jobs and this particular body (Scorcher/Beetle) has been a nemesis at times..  Admittedly, I'm a novice compared to many who belong here, but time and patience have allowed me to improve my results little by little..

Gotta be honest, I’ve run out of masking tape now. So probably just leave the body as it is paint wise. I’ve got a few scorcher decal stickers to go through to pick out a yellow/gold and black theme rather than just apply the whole sand scorcher set.  The sun is out and a bit warmer today so a good day to apply the clear coat 🙂

It is, but it’s flat red, not a deeper cherryish metallic that I have in my minds eye

I tried my blue Subaru brat body on the chassis earlier.  Looks quite good I thought as it’s wearing mudblaster 2 decals 🙂

I don't think Tamiya do a metallic Mica Red - they do a metallic red, TS-18 which is quite bright, and mica red (along with Ferrari mica red) TS-39 and 85 respectively.

To get the deep cherry metallic red, I think you really need to do a gold base coat and then several coats of clear red over the top. I did this on @Peter_Bs MB:

Managed to spray the clear coat earlier today.  The metallic looks good in the sun but not very noticeable indoors.

Yeah, that looks great. A lovely choice of colour. The top picture shows the metallic quite well.

Body complete with the wing mirrors fitted and the sand scorcher front indicators in the nose cone.  I’m really pleased with how it looks, so I’ve decided not to put any stickers/decals on the body.  It does however need stickers for the 3 monster beetle spot lamps.

Overall not bad for a restoration using a mix of old and new parts 😊.
