Motor ESC question.

Recommended Posts

I've just bought a sensored brushless motor and ESC, by the same manufacturer but neither came with a sensor cable. Is it okay to use them without the sensor just to whizz around a car park in the short term.

It depends on the ESC.

Some can run in sensored or sensorless modes, in which case the answer is "go ahead".

Others are sensored only, and will not run the motor without a sensor cable, in which case the answer is "nope".

What equipment are you using?

Most sensored ESCs have settings loaded via program card or a computer. The ESC then send the the motor the the input. Without the sensor cable, the motor won't run properly.

I've bought a skyRC Ares motor and a Toro s50 ESC

Is that a TS50? Says here it is compatible with sensored and sensorless motors:

https://www.skyrc.com/Power_System/ESC/TS50

So if the above info is correct, yes, just set it up for sensorless operation, and with no sensor cable it will run your sensored motor as if it were a sensorless one.
