Getting back into RC with a brand new NDF-01

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I’m new to the forum but not to the hobby. I used to have a vast collection back in 2004 to 08 and used to race twice per week for several years before selling everything and getting on with other things in life.

I’m now slowly getting back into the hobby again and starting with an NDF-01 Nitro Thunder that I recently acquired, brand new and never been run. Hasn’t ever had a drop of fuel through it, tyres aren’t even glued to the rims!

I used to have one of these in my collection back in 2005 but never got round to using it properly; it never used to run right after buying it second hand from a fellow racer, not entirely sure what happened to it after that.

Heres a few photos. Will be running the engine in as soon as I get the chance to and adding radio gear and maybe upgrading the servos that are currently in it. Not entirely sure I want to use it with it being in pristine condition, but we shall see! Was more of a nostalgia purchase than anything as I mainly used to race electric touring cars.

Looks great and welcome back to the hobby. Did you change the wheels from the originals?

Thank you. I didn’t, it came to me like this. I do remember the original Nitro Thunder wheels being red with knobbly tyres, so I’d imagine the original owner used the Nitro Blaster wheels with on-road tyres. I prefer it this way though to be honest, the white looks good against the blue body to me!

lookin through ebay I saw parts for a NDF, But have never googled it what it was.

Is this 1:8 scale?

It’s a 1/10 scale, but I believe uses certain parts you’d normally find on 1/8 scale such as the larger wheel nuts and drive shafts.

Lovely - just got mine :)

I do like those tyres

I tried the other option tryees but didn’t realise I needed bigger wheels, clutch, pinion and diff :(

I’ve not managed to get mine running yet - it started a few times but after 5 seconds it just stopped again.

I saw your build thread, you’ve done a great job!

I have a question for you about it though; how did you fit the receiver and receiver battery pack in there? I have a tiny receiver and battery pack and I’m really struggling to get it to fit and I’m not quite sure why, as when I had my original Nitro Thunder some 15 years ago I’m sure I had a gigantic Acoms receiver and 4x AA holder and everything went in fine but for some reason now, I can’t get it to go in there.

I’m just waiting for a switch to arrive for the receiver and then I’ll be starting mine for the first time. It’s an oddly nice feeling to know I’ll be the first person to start it up ever haha.

4 x AA pack fits front to back

receiver fits next to it

mine had a crystal analogue Rx and it all fitted. Mini fly sky one fits easy

hardest bit is getting the wires through the small gap

ill take a pic later

If you’re going to use a battery cage, I recommend running some tape around the batteries to secure them, the last thing you’d want is one moving slightly and breaking the connection. You’ll know it’s happen because your buggy will disappear towards the horizon at what, and you won’t have any control

I appreciate the photos, thank you. I’m absolutely stumped with mine, here are some photos of what I have. The pack I have only seems to be mm wider than some AA batteries squashed together so it doesn’t make sense to me how this still doesn’t fit...

The servo cables on the aftermarket servos you have are longer than the Tamiya/Futaba ones by the looks of it. More cable to try and fit in the RX box.

I’ve sort of managed to get the cables in such a way that I can bunch them up enough to fit beside the receiver, it’s just the receiver itself that doesn’t want to go in there with the battery pack. Rather baffled. Unless the minor size difference of a 4xAA holder is really all it takes... hmm.

@Paralell All of my cables are tie wrapped outside the box

mine go towards the box, back again and then back to the box. I have minimal cables in the box

Hi JJ, how close are those wires to the spur? Make sure there is no way that they can be rubbed by the spur, or you know that thing I mentioned about your buggy disappearing towards the horizon?

p.s. I know these things coz I heard someone say it once........I mean I saw it happen to someone once......Ok, it was me, these things have happened to me 🤪

Hi everyone first time on here as well.Your cars look brilliant love a project build .Just won an auction for one of these cool cars but having a shipping issue with the engine in it not being allowed to be shipped I’m really hoping they can sort this for me 😫

In the meantime I will accumulate some new spares for it if the worst happens I guess I’ll look for another

🤪

Hello and welcome

shipping - don’t declare it as an engine

they are only worried about the nitro

if you write “petrol” in the item details it will never ship

Not that easy now. Japan Post are actively scanning parcels. I have managed to get one out of Japan by sending surface mail but thats 4-6 weeks wait now.

This is what I can't understand it's not got any fuel or even batteries to be a hazard to post

Trying to find a store or company that can remove the engine so I can at least get the chassis back

In the meantime I am accumulating quite a few new parts ,by the time i finish I wont need the one in "storage"

Bodyshells seem to be a bit of an expensive item though

I have a question about the shocks as at this stage I don't have any there are none on the chassis so can any of the alloy buggy ones from Tamiya fit

like the Big Bore or Aeration ones 'hard to find as well but just interested if i have to build this from scratch might throw some goodies at it .

Cheers Paul .
