FTX mini conversion

Recommended Posts

I've been building a VW camper van from a match stick kit.

Decided the ftx mini chassis would fit almost perfectly for width but I'd have to move the front axle forward.

Running in rear wheel drive only at the moment, could reinstall front drive with a longer driveshaft but would like to keep it RWD if possible.

Had a look online and can't find an upgraded shaft.

Does anyone know where I can get one?

Will upload pics in a bit.

Green's Models stock Cross RC driveshafts in short, long and extra long for under £20 per unit.  The long and extra long list the min/max lengths and they fit a 5mm stub.  Much cheaper than other metal driveshaft arrangements.  I ordered a few a week ago and they arrived quickly but getting stock into the country is becoming a problem now so if they are out of stock there might be a wait.  If the shafts are too long you can chop them down with a hacksaw - see my TXT-1 Spellbreaker thread in the Monster Truck forum for more info.

It also looks like your rear propshaft angle is really bad - you want to extend your top links to square it off.  Get some M3 or M4 rod ends (Greens probably sell them) and some M3 or M4 threaded rod (ebay) :)

I have prepared to extend the front shaft with a headless M3 screw.

But you're right, looking at the picture, the castor angle is way off at the rear.

Still got loads of woodwork to do but would like to get it moving.

Still going....

Smoothed out the front and added a single match layer to the V.

Ordered another chassis so I can connect the 4 links as they are originally without disturbing the geometry.

Made steering wheel, Willy at the wheel of course.

And a VW badge.

I've made rails so the sunroof will slide on and off.

Currently trying to fix the roof with magnets.

Might need to exaggerate wheel arches.

Waiting for driveshafts so I can connect the front, it won't steer without a differential up front.
