Konghead What’s it like to own and use?

Recommended Posts

Thanks, i`ve ordered 2 Sets of 53619  and will install the Stock Springs.

I just found them as a Set of 2 (around 25 Euros without shipping) or in a Set of 4 (around 40 euros without shipping) both Sets would have come with Springs.

But now, since i`ve ordered them im concerned about the springs....

Are the stock Springs not too stiff??

Should i put the same Pistons and shock oils all around?

Here is what i think:

In the front there is 1 pair of wheels, in the Back there are 2 pairs of wheels....

So i think the Back should be softer because there are 4 wheels that support the weight instead of 2 wheels....

Is that thought BS? I do not have any expierience with a 6 wheeler.

Here is what i like:

I like very soft suspension that goes up aand down. I like negative Travel so that a Wheel also gets into holes in the Ground and that the Car has a bit of "Sag".

I like it when you set the car on the Ground and it settles to its "sweetspot" suspensionwise...

I`m totally fine if a car does not bottom out when it falls from about 30cm or 1 feet (or foot??).

So i like to use softer springs AND longer Eyelets/Rodends to have a good long shock.

So what is the Maximum lenght that i can use for the King Yellow? 55, 64, 67, or 70mm?

@J@mes suggested 55mm, but can i use longer shocks? Does that make sence at all?? I`m not a fan of internal shock limiters as long as it doen`t make the Model "tipsy" :D

PS:

I found an extrasheet that says that you have to use a special Radiogear to use 4WS.

I thought that you can use an y-servo-cable.....

But if you use an y-cable does the car drive in "crab" mode?

Does the the rear steers less than the front? Or would they steer the same amount? (If i would use a Y-cable)

AFAIK tamiya 53619 sets are only in a set of 4, without springs?

If using kit springs I'd recommend three hole pistons - it's medium to stiff but better than stock.

My favourite setup is my dynahead setup as a G6-01 with 53619 CVA shocks, comical buggy arms and TRF white spring set, all yellow medium springs.

This provides a buggy which has a lot of leaning when cornering without flipping.

In this instance I've found the rear wheels lift when cornering so would benefit possibly from stiffer springs and/or diff putty to semi lock the diff.

Longer shocks are a pain, even with a g6-01 with wt-01 arms (my a60h hauler is setup this way, just rebuilt them again).

I use a y cable, it's fine, the rears turn less by default compared to the front

Front shocks need an external limiter on the shock shaft to ensure the steering rods don't slam into the chassis

Most of this info is attached to my showroom descriptions of my 6 wheelers

Thanks for all the Info!

Tha`s what i was hoping for!

I will see if the stock Springs are fine.

So, i got my King Yellow presetted.

I installed the 2nd Servo.
The rear Servo does not steer the same Amount in both Directions.
The back steers more to the left than the right, so i have to thinker a bit around.....

But the Lights are working. It uses a Carson LED Lightunit and i habe to get 4 more Blinkers.
2 for the Front and 2 for the Back.....
is there a Set for additional Blinkers that i just can Plug in the existing Socket? Now there are 4 orange LEDs and i would need 8 Orange LEDs....

The next days i think will install the CVAs that came today....

I don`t know if i should use the red rims or if i should try to get the Paint of and paint them with the original Color...

Also i don`t know which Rideheight i should choose. I i should set it up as high as now or if i should lower it.

I like the shown height of the body (that is about 5 holes higher than the height i got it with),, it makes a more "Monstertrucky" look.
But the Body bobbles around wuite a bitwithout any Cage to suppoert the Bodyposts.

Looks like it will be lots of fun.

Would be good to see pictures to compare but I think I agree that the body looks better sitting higher (as in your photos).

Screw `em together

Installed them and made some Cardboardseats for the Body. The Body is already scretched up quite a Bit by the Bodypins.... I don`t want to buy a full can of camel Yellow....   but maybe i have to. But maybe i have to buy a full Body...

PS:

I need an "Otto" from the Simpsons as a Busdriver :D

There is a Set of Simpsons figurines.... Otto would be aprox. 8 cm high.

If an average Busdriver would be 1,75m what is the equivalent to 1:18??

9,7 cm?

Would 8 cm look be ok`?

That should be “close enough “ especially since Otto is a cartoon. IMHO cartoon character drivers needs to be exact in scale.

I recently saw the episode where Otto got his driving licence thanks to Patty & Selma’s dislike of Homer & so the job driving the school bus. Amazing that show been around (and stayed good) since ‘89

I digged Out my King yellow.

I love the Model in the shelf.

It has oilshocks all around and has the double Servo steering.

But it is tipsy and tend to flip over, so i never use the model....

It's Not that fun to drive it because of the poor Jumpphysics and the ipsiyness

It jumps always nose up, the landings are not very smooth because all 6 shocks and they do not compress that much.

I think i have the softest Tamiyaoil filled in, but i Check that and fill in the lightest oil i can find.

Are there any stabilizers for that Kit?

You can fit wider arms from the TL01B to make it more stable.  You would also need the longer driveshafts.  This brings the wheels out wider and makes it look more goofy, IMO, but if it helps you enjoy driving it more, it might be worth a try.

Or you could remove the rear steering.  This will make it more prone to rolling over.  I never bothered with 4 wheel steering on mine, it turns tight enough in my garden that I don't need it.  I don't really have a problem with mine turning over unless I try to turn while going fast.

Since installing CVA oil shocks, I found mine got harder to drive.  I think the spring rate on the standard pogos works well but when combined with shock oil, it works less well.  There is perhaps some more complicated dynamics that affects 6x6 vehicles that needs to be considered when tuning the shocks.  For example, as the weight is spread over more wheels, each spring needs to be softer (than needed for a 4 wheel vehicle).  But that means each wheel is individually softer when it hits a bump, so perhaps this translates into more vertical wheel movement when going fast?  I don't know, it's not something I ever had to think about before.

My G6-01 was my favourite runner but I haven't had much time to run my non-competition cars much this year, so it's not been out of the box in a long time.

I was looking high and low for a Dynahead here in the USA and the supply is totally dried up.  The cost of importing one (and/or paying collector prices) was not an option for me so I begrudgingly went for a Konghead!  :)

Full ball bearings, 20kg metal gear servo up front, generic servo out back, Traxxas TRX4 ESC, Traxxas Hauler wheels.

The color scheme may be familiar to some of you guys.  The windows are tinted pink with an internal light source.  I have pink LEDs on the way for the headlights (I masked off the polycarbonate sections behind the headlight decals so they will shine through).

It drives nicely as-is.  It's quick enough to be entertaining and I think I will enjoy it....but I have a few questions:

1) How long would this stock 27T motor last on 3s with the stock gearing?  My ESC is 3s capable...so the 50% more speed with the additional cell would be just about perfect.

2) I had a vision of making the rear steering switchable through a mix on my radio but it looks like my FlySky GT5 may not be able to do this.   How do you have your rear steering set up? Are you happy with it?

3) I would love to run some wheel/tires that would look SLIGHTLY more scale. These tires, like the stock ones, are just silly looking.  Has anyone attempted this?  The TT01 based touring truck wheels look good (to my eye) but the tires are just too small.   Are King Hauler wheels/tires a possibility? The two pairs of dually tires would be cool if that could be done.

If you’re in the states look for Bastens rear steer module. Allows you to switch between 4/2/crab and rear wheel only steer with a simple 2 channel set up. Works even better with 3 channel. In fact if you buy 2 I’ll buy one off you and pay shipping to UK. The guy that makes them won’t ship to UK!!!
