Is facebook full of showoffs?

Recommended Posts

I relatively recently joined facebook for rc related groups I found. At first it was very interesting with lots of specialist groups I didn’t know about, and sales groups etc for vintage makes or models. Wow it is quite an eye-opener, I thought!

But a already I’ve grown tired of it - It seems every time someone posts up a new paint job on a rare car, or post a pic of a rare buggy they have, someone else comes along with of course 3 x as many rare models all mint. - you post a pic of a kyosho Le Mans motor and someone else will come and post a pic of the entire set, all boxed, mint & unused or whatever.

I will shortly be deleting it I think! It’s full of boasters! Occasionally there’s a good lead on where to find a special part, or advice on alternative parts, but overall I think it’s a bit depressing

I am fairly new to RC cars, well returned to the hobby after 40yrs. being in my 50`s I have been on youtube several times and hate the place. As soon as I am on a site and they say "check out my facebook page" I go no further. I miss out on buying, tips and shopping BUT really hate youtube and that sort of thing.

Not on Bookface, and have no intentions of ever joining. I like my TC community and that’ll do me 👍🏻

Social Media is very useful, but it gives young people depression for all those reasons. IMO.

I think it's interesting to see others' collections personally.

I mean, I wouldn't bother doing another single paint job if I ever saw @Truck Norris workmanship, I mean, it'll never be that good!

If folks have something rare which they have squandered (collected, in their book) and kept in a box, sheltered from the outside world, well frankly I find that a bit sad. A bit like the NIB collectors who never build anything (there's an element of this which I do understand).

Live and let live, I'm enjoying the more active communities both on TamiyaClub and the various social meejia groups!

Are they not just showing you what they think you might be interested in seeing, because you have one yourself?

I've never been on facebook, but it seems to me that whether it's positive or negative depends on how you choose to look at it.

I find Facebook posts come in waves.

For a while it was all On Road stuff, and I'd scroll on by, then NIB would be flavour of the week, recently theres seems to be abuse and a negative atritude towards brushless motors in tamiya cars...🤷‍♂️

Some people have time on their hands atm, (which is getting to me tbh, as too much time is one of my Genie wishes!),  so there's alot of nice paint jobs and cars coming out of the woodwork, but although pretty, I'm with Chris, I much prefer ,running ,in the air ,action shots.

You need to remember ,there's billions of Facebook users ,and 'only ' 52k members on here, which means there'll be someone on Facebook looking at your posts, thinking you're boasting, but also someone thinking they'd like to marry the motor......🙄😂

I like looking at the collections people have on the FB groups but the sheer number of posts is getting on my nerves. I think you can "unfollow" so the posts don't appear in your news feed and you have to click on the group to see them. Might do that.

In answer to your question, undoubtedly yes!

Facebook...

My wife’s view:  it is a wonderful tool to connect with people of similar interests, backgrounds, history, etc.

My view:  it is tool that feeds into peoples narcissism, which allows Marketeers to datamine extremely personal and private information.

While I do wish I could use certain features, like Marketplace, I have no desire to rejoin Facebook. One week of reading about what my neighbors ate for lunch was enough...

YMMV,

Terry

@CoolHands totally agree with the boasting.  Personally I don’t agree with the term ‘social’ as I find too many people do not behave socially, I bet a lot of folks would not say and share in person the way they do on some of these platforms.
It’s be interesting if they ditched anonymity, but then a lot of people would go quiet and that would be counter to their business - mining your data.

Facebook is garbage.  I quit that nonsense three years ago and never looked back.

Thats about the size of it, i notice that happening alot!

It really doesnt bother me though, i just think 'cool! Look at that other vesion/large collection/etc'

Im on a few facebook groups and it really can be a handy way to get info and parts. Ive made lots of RC friends through it, learn alot, and managed to restore cars i never would have been able to as ive managed to meet the people that have large collections of rare parts! Some of my cars would still be wrecks in boxes if it wasnt for some serious collectors on facebook.

I also find that those big collectors also sell parts for less than they would generally bring on ebay as you are interacting and have obvious things in common.

As i type this, more and more people that ive got to know through facebook come to mind. A fair few i now know in real life too. Really helpful knowledgeable folk with skill sets i wouldnt be able to access otherwise.

Yeah, facebook has its share of idiots, and folk do like to 'show off' but rarely do i think its ment in that way.

Ive got sooo much more out of this hobby since joining various facebook groups.

A couple of examples, i met a local pro brushed motor builder who has helped me massively and personally knows alot of the big names of the 80s rc world.

I have had stangers phone me up and spend a few hours walking me through how to diagnose and repair vintage esc's

I have had issues with vintage parts and electronics and have ended up chatting with the people that made them in the first place!

Ive made great friends from joining groups that run race meets ive started going to

And loads more!!!

It's a tool, and if you use it effectively it's very valuable. I only use it for hobby stuff so I don't use my real name (so as not to get requests from actual friends and colleagues etc). I don't have any personal info on there (job, specific location, photos of me). I rarely add someone as a friend, but if they want to add me that's fine. I immediately unfollow them so my feed doesn't get diluted with any personal stuff, it's just a stream of RC and car posts.

I've found stuff for sale that I've not seen anywhere else, made connections and friends, sold stuff without eBay fees, gained valuable knowledge, promoted my builds which has lead to buyers for subsequent builds and most importantly, shared knowledge and helped people out.

Basically the same as on here but a wider audience. It's not a replacement (info is too unorganised) but it's a vital addition for me.

I blow hot & cold with Facebook.
I like the fact I can keep in touch with friends who I might not necessarily see regularly and all of that kind of stuff.

What really boils my pee is people reposting crappy memes, crappy inspirational quotes, chain letter type things and all that crap.

Joined a load of RC related groups and found them OK so far, found some helpful advice and some cool stuff so far. Might be the honeymoon period of a 'new' hobby, we'll see

No Facebook for me either but I have found rc bits on Facebook thanks to a friend who uses it. I've got no intention of joining though.

As far as boasting! I'm interested in anything Tamiya whether it's a mint nib model or a rough old tl01 runner. I do sometimes think how the badword do people afford somethings like early new kits! However we all have a bit of a show off in us, I sometimes show a completed model on the forum not for my head to swell just to share it with fellow enthusiasts. I don't spend money on fancy cloths going out and don't go on holidays, sooner spend it on my Tamiya collection and real cars.

I'm not on Facebook for all of the above reasons and also for the sheer toxicity that (mostly) Facebook and YouTube have. Thankfully the Tamiya community has very little of it, but especially bashing and crawling have the most [redacted] obnoxious [redacted] fanbois in the hobby who have no other purpose in their sorry lives but to trash on every other brand of car/motor/servo ETC that they do not use. Instagram seems to be better but does not have the groups and most R/C forums (not this one) are the same 6 questions everyday and don't have many active members.

Same here. I understand that Facebook can be a great tool, I respect people's choice to use it for whatever purpose and I know I'm missing out on all sort of deals. That being said, I was never on it and I don't have the slightest intention of ever joining. This TC community is just perfect for me with all its interesting inputs, stimulation and users eager to share their knowledge and passion. I really like the positive attitude that is always displayed in this forum.

Besides, even if I wanted to, I wouldn't be balanced enough to have it: I can barely keep up with an email and a Whatsapp number without wanting to brake all these screens for good (and I'm not exactly a social butterfly).

Live and let live, always, but as for me TC is all I need in that department.

I used to be on there years ago but I deleted my account, which FB made harder to do than I expected. I have Instagram & WhatsApp accounts though. Sometimes a search will lead to FB but the content is out of my reach & not worth having an account to access.

I think it’s like looking behind the curtain in the Wizard of Oz.

Someone will always have more.

More cars, more parts, more vintage parts.

Be happy with what you have.

Keep looking for what you want, it will turn up one day.

Make connections. Most people are good. Ignore the idiots.

Its a hobby and it should be fun.

Facebook - where opinion and conjecture replaces facts and reasoned discussion

i popped back on during brexit to read the brexit party trash and I found myself quoting proven fact and having people swear at me for daring to show it them when it clearly disproved their racist tripe and smashing my head against the desk  - so I left again

all kt makes me realise is there are a badword of a lot of absolute idiots on the planet and I’m glad I don’t have to engage with them that regularly
