Is facebook full of showoffs?

I relatively recently joined facebook for rc related groups I found. At first it was very interesting with lots of specialist groups I didn’t know about, and sales groups etc for vintage makes or models. Wow it is quite an eye-opener, I thought!

But a already I’ve grown tired of it - It seems every time someone posts up a new paint job on a rare car, or post a pic of a rare buggy they have, someone else comes along with of course 3 x as many rare models all mint. - you post a pic of a kyosho Le Mans motor and someone else will come and post a pic of the entire set, all boxed, mint & unused or whatever.

I will shortly be deleting it I think! It’s full of boasters! Occasionally there’s a good lead on where to find a special part, or advice on alternative parts, but overall I think it’s a bit depressing

This is what facebook was made for. Dissing people and making them down. They just wraped it nicely with a thumb-up. :D

Wow everyone bagging on Facebook. I think it’s great. I only post stuff I don’t mind showing the world. It’s a great way to reconnect with people in you past.

About the groups, sure everyone boasts on them. That’s what their there for.  I like when other people show their similar vehicles. Some people have some crazy talent.

I will not engage in ******* book. It’s a platform for gossip and internet tough guys hiding behind a veil of  entitlement. I’m sure it has its place but it’s mainly for bored housewives and no life wussies.

It's a tool, and if you use it effectively it's very valuable.

You've certainly made a point with that. And by the way I'm no fan of the FB website.

I think you lot have a jaded view of the world. Facebook is a huge eco system and like the real world you pick and choose where to go based on your likes and interests. I could complain all web forums are full of losers, but basing that opinion on just having been on a Traxxas forum I would be missing out on the lovely people on here.

Facebook lets you share stuff, it is not a platform for discussion and debate as much as somewhere like here. People are not overly “showing off” they are sharing what they have or have created.

I like Facebook, I am not involved with and RC stuff on there but a lot of the motorcycle groups are fantastic and I get a lot of good information from people sharing their experiences and knowledge.

On Facebook people say things that they wouldn’t say to a group of people in the pub - that’s why it’s toxic

connecting with people from the past is what it’s initial function was and it destroyed friends reunited because it was free.

but once connected why not use whatsapp to chat to them or messenger

and why spout opinion to no one end everyone?

its the white noise of life - just in distinct chatter laced with bigotry and hatred for our fellow humans

its made society angry at each other

Facebook makes you jump through hoops when you want to leave and cancel your account.  I'll never go back to it.  It's really liberating when you ditch it.

Facebook can be a pain but as others have said use it with your rules and it's a useful platform.

Instagram is the way forward for me, interesting hashtags to follow, people generally put up good photos and the comments are unobtrusive.

It’s worth nothing and is dangerous - let me take it off your hands before someone gets hurt :)

Anyone care to educate me on the running joke on TC that is the Conrad 240826? Looked through some old threads but could not find the origin of the holy grail of brushed motors

While I do wish I could use certain features, like Marketplace, I have no desire to rejoin Facebook. One week of reading about what my neighbors ate for lunch was enough...

YMMV,

Couldn't agree more. I found a happy way to enjoy FB which is to join for hobby stuff only. No family or friend connections at all.

Being kind of guilty, I reckon I'm a bit obliged to respond: My user name here on TC used to be "Miramar". I left for reasons now irrelevant and when I joined again, I started a new account with my current user name. @ Twinset can confirm this to be correct. As an admin, he kindly offered to merge my old and new accounts, but I didn't see any real purpose, so he kept them separate.

The Conrad "legend" started with a post by member "My Monster Beetle is broken", if I recall correctly. I believe he asked about the origin and/or quality and/or perfomance of the motor. Living in Germany and having rather infavourable experiences with the ......eh.....mediocre quality of Conrad products (a chain of store selling electrics/electronics/models junk products (mostly)), I responded with an ironic (but not sarcastic) comment about the superior quality and extreme rarity of the Conrad motor.  Some joined with more elaborate and wilder posts, fully understanding that it was all just for fun, whereas a few were offended by my post. Member "My Monster Beetle is Broken" also responded, ensuring that he understood it as the friendly joke that I intended it to be, and if I remember correctly, he continued to post in the thread for quite a while, contributing to the joke himself. So, he is to be creditted for the fun we've repeatedly had with the "Conrad legend" during all these years, not I!

Since the original post, many new members, who probably haven't read enough of the initial thread to understand that it's all a joke, have continued to ask what this "Conrad legend" is all about.

As for the motor itself, I don't know when it was released, but my guess is late eighties. Being from Conrad, although probably manufactured by some no-name company and just branded Conrad, the performance and quality is on Conrad's typical low level, even for its time. As for rarity, I reckon it's a bit rare'ish now so many years later, but I think any high quality RC motor from any of the low volume specialists of the time (Reedy, Trinity, Losi, B&R, Peak Performance etc.)  is a lot rarer.

By the way, at the time when MMBIB's thread was at the hottest and new jokes about the incredible value and rarity were added daily, I actually owned a Conrad myself without knowing it. It came mounted in a wreck of a Blackfoot I bought as a part of a lot in 2000/2001, and I had just put it aside because of the condition of the chassis without noticing the motor. When I moved in 2013, I discovered it and still have it.

So, if I should get short on money when I retire, I have a way of ensuring a life in extreme luxury.  What will I do; live in poverty with a genuine Conrad motor or live among the "upper 1%" without the Conrad motor? :P  I guess I will miss Saint-Tropez, Cayman, Malibu and Gstaad, but not as much as I would miss The Conrad!

Thanks for writing this whole essay on the Conrad. I had quickly picked up on it being an inside joke through all of the old (circa 2003) threads.

I've never had the desire to have anything to do with Facebook after witnessing a fellow work colleague whilst I was eating my lunch at work do exactly the same thing! Start taking photos of his food to put on Facebook and younger family members as your having a conversation with them suddenly start looking at their phones and guess what?........yes Facebook and the latest thing I've noticed is the watching Facebook/YouTube with the sound turned up no matter where they are totally unaware of their irritating stupidity!, Nah I'll give all that a wide birth! things like the TC club and forum is more my thing by far!

Yup absolutely hate that!

VISIT MY SHOWROOM FULL OF ONE OFF AMAZING BUILDS AND RARE COLLECTABLES

:P

On a serious note though, I fully agree that it has its uses and certainly isn't all bad. But, it is primarily designed as a medium for people to inform the world what you are doing - which is fundamentally egotistical. Why anyone would think the world would be interested in what you ate for lunch today and what you were wearing at the time is beyond me, it just breeds self importance, which unfortunately leaves you open to be brutally knocked down by people who don't like you, or what you ate, or wear.

An old chap I used to work with said something to me a looong time ago and it has stuck with me. It was about adult entertainment, and he said he'd never viewed any and he never would - no interest in it at all. I asked why, and his reply was "why on earth would i waste time watching people do things I would much rather be doing myself?" And you know what - I think he hit the nail on the proverbial with that, and I apply that to almost everything now!

I'm in several Facebook RC related groups, mostly Tamiya. Even run one myself for the Thundershot and its derivatives. Personally I don't think it's full of show offs anymore than anywhere else. My only gripe would be, a few times I've asked for something I'm looking for. Someone will post a picture, saying I have one. Then when you ask a price say its not for sale.

Was just thinking about this and then came across this thread. I decided to leave all of the Facebook groups earlier this week after a number of idiotic moaning toddlers just couldn't keep their opinions to themselves. Its funny how everyone (not really everyone but...) on there seems to be an expert.

Thats about the size of it, i notice that happening alot!

It really doesnt bother me though, i just think 'cool! Look at that other vesion/large collection/etc'

Im on a few facebook groups and it really can be a handy way to get info and parts. Ive made lots of RC friends through it, learn alot, and managed to restore cars i never would have been able to as ive managed to meet the people that have large collections of rare parts! Some of my cars would still be wrecks in boxes if it wasnt for some serious collectors on facebook.

I also find that those big collectors also sell parts for less than they would generally bring on ebay as you are interacting and have obvious things in common.

As i type this, more and more people that ive got to know through facebook come to mind. A fair few i now know in real life too. Really helpful knowledgeable folk with skill sets i wouldnt be able to access otherwise.

Yeah, facebook has its share of idiots, and folk do like to 'show off' but rarely do i think its ment in that way.

Ive got sooo much more out of this hobby since joining various facebook groups.

A couple of examples, i met a local pro brushed motor builder who has helped me massively and personally knows alot of the big names of the 80s rc world.

I have had stangers phone me up and spend a few hours walking me through how to diagnose and repair vintage esc's

I have had issues with vintage parts and electronics and have ended up chatting with the people that made them in the first place!

Ive made great friends from joining groups that run race meets ive started going to

And loads more!!!

I agree, I’ve found it useful for selling stuff as well. But as you say, I’ve dealt with some people with amazing collections you could only dream of, but they have really helped out with parts to restore a car and a lot cheaper than eBay.

Personally I don’t use eBay half as much, these days. The Facebook sites have been much better.

I’m just happy to get that part which moves on a project.

These things usually come down to personal preferences, a bit like the culture of a company, i.e. 'how we do things around here'. I know I'm not alone in recognising that Tamiya Club and this forum has a really great culture - it's welcoming however long you’ve been a member, helpful, collaborative, informative, as well as light/not too serious, lots of different interests can sit side by side without competing with each other, and the tone of messages reflects these aspects. Personally, I like it here and have done so since joining over 15 years ago. I have dipped into other places (inc. FB, for the odd purchase), and it's always interesting to see what goes on elsewhere from time to time.

I've never entertained Facebook or Twitter and up until now I don't think I've missed out on anything? But I do hear certain family members and acquaintances talk about stuff on these social media sites like it's the holy grail of correct opinions (can people be that naive to the extent of stupidity??) On more than one occasion I've been in conversation about different subjects and it's a meaningful good conversation! Until the words "well on Facebook" then it just all crumbles and the meaningful bit of the conversation disappears!. But I am a bit of a fan of Instagram because I like looking at people's creativity on anything rc and just photos of some stunning places around the world?
