...friend found out i was a gettin a vintage bug and wanted to let me know that 2wks ago out at a local track a fella came out and was runnin an astute in 2wd mod. he witnessed people laughin at the guy, 1st b/c it was a tamiya, then when some of the young guys found out how old it was (i'd guess that it might have been older than some of them right?).

still had the 'awesome' body. well accordin to the results the guy finished 2nd to a bk2 in all 3 quals and 3rd overall (made a mistake late) outta 18 cars.

not bad if you ask me for an old dog. sure makes ya sulk if you got beat and you just bought 1 of the new rigs.

just thought i'd share, makes ya want to dig out ur old rig and have a go eh?

Thank you; one of my hobby horses so beautifully illustrated!!!

In the right hands, old cars can easilly compete with the new (at least enough to have some fun), and its good to see!!! All you have to do is make sure the electrics are good, keep the laps clean, and most of the time you wont be last.

Hey, just for novelty i entered my Super Champ at a local race last summer and beat the pants off of most of the cars there by coming in 3rd. Originally when i entered it, the registration guy told me i couldn't enter a gas car!!![:0] People laughed from beginning to end. The car was older than 90% of the people there.[:D]

at a club meet about three years ago I was running a factory team wrx tc3 fully hardcore racing carboned and max mods indoor on carpet.we were racing some serious cars and drivers eg- ex national british champs etc and I was running third in a finals.I thought I was the business doing really well. NOPE!! :) I was passed by a "skilled" driver (unliked me lol) by a (wait for it) A 10 YEAR OLD OR SO SCUMACHER PRO CAT[:0]!!!!

This illustrates a thing or two

no1 I am in fact a **** driver [:I]

no2 technology will only get you so far

so in fact its (for a skilled driver) probably more fun and a good laugh to teach us mortal racers to eat humble pie and lets face it the older stuff is a lot more fun to drive as its not so much "driving itself".

Hey Robby, great story. What kinds of cars did you beat with your SC?

I agree with you acorn. Personally I think that buggy technology reached a critical mass over a decade ago, and it's been minor gains ever since.

From my point of view, this now means there's now every reason for RC manufacturers to go back to designing modern RC buggies as though they are scale models of real cars (like the 80s buggies), rather than being so sleek and featureless - and boring. If there are few performance gains left, why not make a few aesthetic gains instead? Take the hobby back a little to what once made it great.

cheers,

H.

Yes bearings everywhere. If I can recall from memory, the entire car takes either 52 or 56 bearings? Something in that neighborhood. The most I have ever used in one kit build.

so, who wants to see me try to race my "Desert Fox" next race season???? I am almost ready, just need alum. dampers, and get a 19turn. I think it will be awesome, well, unless I finish last all the time, but..go team Tamiya!
