Just wondering what are worthwhile hop-ups on a ta01/manta ray when using a better motor, they instructions quote bearings, ball diffs, universal shafts.Would you agree?

If you are going for a hotter motor, bearings are well worth getting as the stock bushes will wear much faster with more power. Ball diffs are handy because they act like a limited slip diff so give more traction although not vital. I would also say universals are fairly unimportant. The main things I would want to change other than bearings are the driveshaft and motor mount. The stock driveshaft is very flexible so will bend at high RPM, there is a hop up item but they are getting rarer and rarer. The hop up aluminium motor mount is also a rare item although non Tamiya hop ups can be purchased cheaply (I picked up a non Tamiya one for 7.50GBP). The alu motor mount both acts as a heatsink and is much less likely to break than the stock item.

I have also seen a steering link sett thats seems good, it's for the hummer but the Mantaray are the same. It was red and it went on ebay togheter with a alloy motor mount for a verry steep price! Where have you bought you motormount Pushrod? The set for Clod witch are Wala Wala(great tip buy the way!) Can they be used?

I bought the cheap motor mount from a Tamiyaclub member. I doubt greatly a clod item can be used, the motor mount is specific to the TA-01/2/Manta Ray chassis.

I'd like to keep the car to genuine hop-ups,strangly in my ta01 celica manual it quotes the manta ray stainless steel prop shaft set in the hop-ups?

Yup, the prop is the same on TA-01, Hummer, Manta Ray and the buggies that are based on it. Expect to pay in excess of 20GBP for used examples of each hence why aftermarket stuff (which is usually almost as good quality wise) is a tempting prospect.

TA01 genuine HOp uPs:

Front and rear universal Joints

Touring car gears (all of plastic, not alluminium)

Absolutelly rear diff (it's vital to avoid rear gear destruction with hot motor!)

FRP damper mounts

Alloy dampers (low friction and so on)

Hard propeller shaft

One way front (there are two type. The first one kept front diff on, the second one is mounted instead the front diff)

FRP chassis

Carbon chassis

Upper turnbuckles

Alloy motor mount (absolutelly needed!)

rear anti roll bar (only TA02. You need mods to mount on TA01)

Bearings all around.

Not genuine (not Tamiya)

All is changeable! Check on ebay

Hi, I have scanned a parts list from an advert in "Radio Race Car International", uK magazine, from June 1992 when the Manta Ray was very prominent in racing at my local club, and there were loads of Hot-Ups available from GPM Racing of Hong Kong etc.

http://www.geocities.com/prescotmes/GPM_Manta_Ray_Parts.jpg

BTW the message on the GPM website recently was puzzling me. Their English is not exactly perfect and it rather gave me the impression that they were about to stop producing Hot up parts? Although this looks unlikely. I don't see any Manta Ray / TA-01 parts listed there either yet for the re-release Manta Ray.

P.S. If you are ever reading this Jason or ? (can't remember your name, sorry) who had the Manta Ray with loads of Hop ups when we were both racing at Earlestown, Newton-Le-Willows, Merseyside, England then I would like to hear from you... I was the poor guy with the Kyosho Raider wishing he had your Manta Ray!!

Cheers,

Alistair G.

I bought a carson aluminium prop shaft for ta-01/manta ray from a german ebayer for a very reasonable 8 euros [:D] its very light, and reasonably well engineered, massively superior to the wobbly wire.

He still has 3 for sale and theres another from a different seller there at the moment.

the carson p/n is 13708.
