(Aqro)Shot to the Heart! - DT03 T/B

Recommended Posts

Sealed the hole I made with some CA glue, seems to have sealed well but I still don’t trust it as an emulsion shock.

TRF bladders and some foams on the way, so I’ll try them as both vented and non-vented bladder shocks

My recent run of messing things up may be a blessing in disguise in a way, I’ve never got on with emulsion shocks. Yes they are technically more stables of the course of a race off road, but ******* if I could get them to have equal rebound, even using scales to put exactly the same amount of oil in each shock.
Quietly impressed with the build quality here though, the top rod guide neeed to be pressed in quite hard, I used the trusty box wrench for this, use number #4117 for this most versatile of tools. After that it was a breeze. TRF X seals, plenty of green slime to make it smooth.

oil wise, I subscribe to the harder upfront school of thought, tames the steering, so AE 40wt Front and 30wt rear (525/325 cst iirc).

the X-ray bladder foams are a perfect fit, no need to trim and I discovered that in this instance fitting the caps vented first made things much easier, adding the vent screws to check rebound and they are spot on the same in the pairs. Will be interesting to see how vented/non-vented changes the handling in the future.

Springs, stock red all round at the moment, but that will change at some point I’m sure.

mounting was too easy, the rear caps fouled the carbon stay slightly so I popped a 1mm shim behind the ball and this sorted it.

All the best tales have a start a middle and an end, they tell of triumph and defeat, of obstacles cleared and challenges met, of joy and despair.
Harken now then as I tell a tale of joy, of failure and of the resourceful nature of our fair species.

”It’s said it was spring, summer was nigh, yet truly this fee like the 800th day of this unending winter. Rain, rain like you’ve never seen, and hail, don’t forget the hail.

“What to do?” he pondered, how best to pass the time whilst waiting for the seasons to change?

”ahh yes, the diff. That will be relaxing and while away an hour or so”

contrary to the belief of many, he found building ball diffs easy and somewhat therapeutic, it’s one of the many things that made him an outcast.

”stock though that is the problem, when will the boats arrive from the east?” He pondered ”no matter, there is always a solution, for does not the Mighty Lord T’Miya reuse many parts?”

So a suitable diff was found (he thought) along with some lighter and more spherical balls.

788BE449-8946-41B0-A07C-DDD6ED0F3A04.md.

Having collected the tools and unguents of his trade he set to work.

following the teachings of yore passed down via many masters he patiently and diligently sanded the plates down with his finest paper

FE388586-536B-418E-80D7-8D93787780D3.md.

Only the gentle scratching of metal on paper could be heard, too engrossed in his work to utter a sound. The plates suitably conditioned he held them up to the light, “surely the prophets would approve of these” he mused.

Now he picked up the pace, clear grease applied liberally to those surfaces where balls meet plates, and the HCCA diff balls seated in their proper places.

6A95C485-2301-4468-923B-40E6165D4695.md.

As he well knew the thrust bearing deals with different stresses and as such needed a darker thicker grease. Black it is, black like the hearts of those who follow the way of the gear diff.

7F219A17-7679-455C-9763-99E8CB80A831.md.

Springs and bearing suitably coated the diff could be assembled and, using the ever present box wrench, tightened to the correct level.

50DE6FB9-DDCD-42B1-9EA7-C8D5B28DA7F3.md.

“It is a thing of beauty is it not?” He remarked to the empty room around him. “Simple in its construction yet complex in its result. Efficient power transmission to either wheel with...” He raised a finger in emphasis “..with a limiting slip effect, ultimately protecting the drive train as the Lord T’Miya intended”

Satisfied with his work he removed the gearbox to install his masterpiece.

F59437BA-90C1-4C0C-B421-3D3C402FB74E.md.

“WHHHHHHYYYYYYYYY, why must you treat me so lord!!! What have I done to deserve this!!!”

Hubris, it’s a cruel mistress. In his confidence that he had found a way around the stock issues he had misplaced his faith in his abilities. A simple enough error perhaps, but following on from the shockcaps? It’s enough to test a mans soul....

disconsolately he sat there, angry at himself at the world. “But wait, is it not written that the Lord T’Miya provides many spares? To eBay!” and there he found salvation, for a kind soul had no further need of a DT-02 MS Diff Gear and it was duly bought.

Well, after that huge **** up I needed to achieve something good, so fitted the Speed Passion 10.5t with a 17t steel pinion.

And then fitted some foam at the back of the battery tray to bring the shorty lipo forward, should help the overall weight balance by shifting it forward a tad.

A little light fettling last night whilst I wait for the diff gear to arrive. When I first built this a year ago I temporarily lost the rear wing, until I found it where all things lost go, down the back of the sofa.....

anyway, in the meantime I’d got some 1mm lexan and made a new wing, so now I have options when I go the track.  It’s slightly bigger and may or may not make a difference to handling.

Ball diff complete.

significant difference between the two gears, can’t believe I didn’t spot that first time.

interestingly the DT02 diff has 2 extra balls over the TA03/DF01.

Fitted a new servo and took the opportunity to sneak an extra 20g of weight under it. 45g extra up front now.

Been looking at alternative hub options that allow extra tuning, started a whole new thread for it.

The upshot is that the Aqroshot now has DF03 rear arms and hubs, and I like it.

F6C03153-8ECD-46D5-B268-2591A7B9BCD9.md.

As well as extra camber link options, they are stiffer and so less flexy, exhibit less slop and being longer should lead to a more stable car as the roll center is less active.

For the fronts I have some TRF 201 C hubs on the way.

Everything that is old is new again.

Was looking at the F104 uprights for the front hubs, but it’s also appears that the F103GT hubs might be perfect to make the switch between buggy and truck super easy.

EDIT: the F103GT hubs were not perfect, but I have couple more options to try.

Whilst waiting for a few more potential front steering knuckles to arrive, these finally turned up….

D60A0EA6-25B7-41A5-BE0C-01155ED8E49C.md.

the carbon reinforced M parts.

As expected they are much stiffer than the standard shiney black plastic, but still have a small amount of flex plus they look high quality when on the buggy, I wish Tamiya used this material as standard…sigh.

Took the opportunity to reroute the electrics so I could fit the wing mount, making it even easier to switch back and forth from truck and buggy. Cut away the switch mount to creat room for the motor cables.

Finally got to the end of the search for front and rear hub upgrades. To compliment the DF03 setup at the rear, I found a good solution to wanting to run hex wheels up front, Schumacher make a 12mm hex conversion for the Cougar KR and it is perfect.

3A9641E5-440F-4165-AE2F-C28A62042161.md.

The Upright needs drilling out to take the 3mm hinge pin, but thats an easy task. The axle sits on two ABEC5 sealed bearings, one on either side of the upright, a clever use of steps and collars help to reduce slop.

D7164BB2-4B58-4FF5-A006-56F195D6CA85.md.557BECF4-DF5E-4DBB-8160-6CFB91AA1EDC.md.

It's then all held in place with a hex head screw. A dab of AG threadlock to secure it.

488528E1-BC4A-4977-B779-AC06E36186CD.md.

The hex is of the captured pin type, where a rubber band secures it, but a dab of AW to help hold the pin in place never went amiss tbh. Prepped a set of the 0deg ( Hop-Up 25deg) C hubs for fitting. The Upright fits nicely with a 1mm spacer above and below, fits well in the standard C hubs too. Popped a 1mm spacer under the ball stud too to help with the bump steer.

All fitted and they look great with plenty of steering throw and are going to make it super easy to switch from Truck to Buggy. No need to change axles, just switch body and wheels.

The DF03 rear arms needed a longer Turnbuckle than the DT03 set has, so picked up some Ti ones from 3Racing.

9924D022-424E-4CE5-BC5A-2F4973B6B64A.md.

52mm for the rear but forgot the low friction adjusters are quite short, so could have gone longer than 38mm for the front. It seems to work fine though.

Prepped the adjusters before fitting with a hex screw and a dab of grease.

So here we are, pretty much a TRF-ish DT03, all thats left is a new Buggy body, wing and some fresh wheels.

BF45EB50-F69E-4A3E-B64D-A21CD6F5C8EC.md.EBB351F8-4505-435C-9D5E-9EAD788B21AC.md.

Plenty of extra set up options, more durability due to the reinforced parts, better toe-in at the rear and stance at the front. All of that plus the trailing axles should makes this a little easier to drive.

It does looks very impressive, it must be one of the most developed chassis’ of its type out there now?

What’s the plan, is it going to get dirty?

Thanks buddy. :)

been very unlucky with track time so far this summer, isolation, work issues and kids etc… but it will hit the Astro soon, I hope.

So plans for this are for to become an actual race truck, gonna go mess things up amongst  the T6.2’s and Schumacher Storms, should be fun.

Yes it would be cheaper to just buy a more race orientated truck, but frankly I’ll have more fun with this, than I would with the same truck everyone else has, also they have far too many set-up options for someone of my level.

Talking of setup, the servo is fine, but I’ll be putting a 10.5t brushless in, so I should at least not get lapped too many times.

To help with that power, a ball diff is on the way, I’m amazed that is basically still the Top Force diff design, intact the DT-02 one appears to be the TA-03 without the extra gears. Also changing out all the bearings for ABEC 5 sealed units .

1B328F95-08F7-4D4B-B935-B50CEFDC944C.jpg

I’ve grabbed the reinforced M-Parts tree for some stiffer damper stays, cos I will crash at some point.

Lastly I need to switch out the dampers, these Durango Big Bores are good, but I'm not convinced on the adjustments to the camber links, plus the front dampers are too long, measuring almost 90mm, which hugely effects the ride height.  I’ll probably grab some DF03/aeration shocks

Your the only other person who has went with the reinforced parts for the DT03.  They are soooo cheap like $5 us
