Is there a much simpler way to fix that drive shaft issue? How about the Frog parts? does that help fix the problem?

I think they do. IIRC, Tamiya (or a distributor, can't remember) sent Frog parts out to someone as a "fix". The Frog dogbone setup along with possibly limiting the droop/down travel of the rear shocks would probably do the trick. It works on one of my runners.

The Frog dog bones didn't work to stop the gear grinding on my Blackfoot. Luckily for me this was when Mheald was making his gearbox braces and that solved the problem easily.
