How many bearings does a frog have..recently got the frog not started building yet, I also got 8 bearings,  but looking on some model sites there are upgraded bearings with more than 8...confused.

The bearings in the Tranny should never need upgrading if you buy good bearings to start. But to answer your question, yes you can change them out whenever.

You may want to some some reading on rubber sealed vs steel sealed vs unsealed and decide what’s best for you.

Frog bearings:

2x 1150 each front wheel = 4

2x 1150 each rear axle = 4

2x 850 for counter gear in tranny = 2

Tamiya bearings in the gearbox are fine. But they are on the stiff side because it's jam packed with grease.  Thick grease is necessary if the bearing is used in dirt. But in the gearbox, all that grease isn't necessary.  If you want, you could soak those bearings in alcohol and re-lubricate them with thinner oil. You can even use WD40, just make sure to wipe it clean, so WD40 won't crack plastics. You could make them as free-spinning as a fidget spinner.

The other 8 bearings for the wheels should be rubber-sealed bearings. Wheels are exposed to dirt. Rubber shields fight dirt and splashes best.

You can search for "5x11x4mm bearings."  They can be found as cheap as $3.60 for ten. Usually smoother rolling than Tamiya bearings.

RC Mart in Hong Kong sells Yeah Racing bearings.  You'd have to pay more for shipping. But Yeah Racing's rubber-shielded bearings should be equal to or better than most packaged stuff they sell for individual kits.
