hi chaps. I was wondering what the practical implications are of removing a manual ESC and replacing it with an ESC.

I'm bidding on a manta ray on ebay cos I fancy a change from touring cars. It comes with all original stuff - ie manual speed controller. Does this also involve a forward reverse servo or am i getting confused? Do ESCs replace forward/rev servos and manual speed controllers?

Thanks!

HI Julesbristol,

An ESC replaces indeed either the throttle servo as the MSC (ie the MECHANIC speed controler). If you have an old fashioned MSC system like in the Sand Scorcher etc. you also needed an extra battery pack for giving the servo's & receiver the needed power, usually 4 AA size batteries. If so you should also be aware that your receiver is BEC (Battery eleminator Circuit) compatible when using a modern ESC, because these are normally BEC devices. So if the Manta Ray has a BEC compatible receiver you can screw out the MSC, including resistor, also lose the second servo and replace this with a ESC.

Yes, you are correct. The mechanical speed control uses an additional servo to move it. Nothing fancy required, just a basic servo. ESC's get rid of the servo.

the most common type of msc (the type with a wiper, seperate resistor and 3 speeds) normally includes a wire to supply power to the radio gear, you dont always need a seperate battery pack for the radio gear when using an msc.

esc's dont just eliminate the need for a throttle servo, they actually replace the throttle servo as they plug into the same slot on the reciever.
