Tamiya TT-02s new build

Recommended Posts

So its been literally years since I last built a new Tamiya model. I've resurrected a few Tamiyas and built other brand models but no new Tamiya builds. I wanted a Subaru and parts support and it seems the TT-01 / TT-02 are still well supported and so my choice was made. I did look at the standard TT-02 but the "s" had a few choice upgrades that I would have bought anyway so I found one and clicked.

The build was fairly straight forward I mixed a few parts up and missed a couple of pointers but soon got it all set straight. Its a very nice build and "if you read it" the manual is very good, just as I remember. I especially like that the manual s to scale for the parts, so if your not sure you just lay the screw/nut/rod etc over the part description on the page and voila you have your part - or not :)

Below is a quick shot of the finished build before I started running it (tyres all face the right way now!!). I do love the Tamiya "warning" stickers, immediate throwback to me as a kid with my Sand Rover thinking how grown up it all was with its warning signs everywhere.

Waiting on the PS-16 paint for the shell, cant wait to see it all in its finery with Rally Blocks, Gold Wheels and all those lovely decals.

Quick question, has anyone figured out how to put a slipper clutch onto a TT-02? I have a local track that has some pretty big jumps and fear the drive train may not survive my ham fisted throttle control.

Looks GREAT so far!! B) Really like the Tyres. Haven't seen them before.

Might inspire me to get back to work on my TT-02 - pretty HEAVILY modified.

Thanks,

I grabbed them off ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/D-027-1-10-Front-Rear-Rally-Car-RC-Rubber-On-Road-Arrow-Tyre-Black-Foam-Insert-4/332119841024?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

I only wanted the foams, as I dont have any for the rally blocks I ordered. However I am now using the foams that came with the chassis so these got used.

Hmnnn few days in and motor broke and pinion worn out. I guess I am running it off road, but thought they should last longer than a few days. I've ordered a steel pinion and a new Torque Tuned motor. To stop so much detritus getting in I am thinking of wrapping some electrical tape around the openings on the motor by the brushes and if that "also" kills it then I will just go brushless and be done with it.

With the efficiency of Lipo Batteries these days, go for a hotter Motor with smaller Steel Pinion Gear.😉

I run a 19 turn Motor in my TT-02R with a 15t Pinion...

I get about 40mph on Tarmac and 15-20 minute Runtimes!!

Mine also does a decent job of keeping debris out of the Motor, with the Motor Cover/Cooling Fan Mount, that came with the Kit. Even when Rallying off Road.

Keeping pebbles out of the Steering Bellcrank - that's a whole other story!! 😖

Even offroad, the stock pinion should last for more than a few days on a Torque Tuned, unless you were running almost non-stop in some sort of endurance event?

I'd check the mesh and motor position - something may be amiss.

I haven't seen any slipper clutches for this chassis, but GPM make steel diff gears for the TT02, which would definitely make the driveline a bit stronger. I just installed them on my TT02b. Noisy, but tough as nails.

You where correct! I thought I had built this with care and attention, but no. I had incorrectly meshed the ratio - dont even know how its possible but there you go. Thank you for asking the question! Now with a new motor but the original part worn pinion its like a new car - all quiet and smooth. Need to re-run my previous TT-02s vs TGS vid. Thanks again

L & L Models have some stock of their mk2 escort shell, they do quite a few others but he's been struggling to keep stock as supply is short and lots of people are buying stuff.
