Traxxas XL5 in a Clod Buster

Recommended Posts

Anybody know if a Traxxas XL5 ESC (with y-leads added) will stand up to running a stock Clod with 27T 540 silvercans on 7 cell nimh, 8.4v? On one motor the specs allow for 4,8-9.6 input voltage. They are also spec'ed for single motors down to 12T 550 or 15T 540. The old rule of thumb about dividing by two for twin motors means two 27T 540s might be pushing it. The page I got that info from also quoted max current as 100A forward and 60A reverse if that helps. Thanks.

Never tried it on 2 motors, but the XL-5 is a fairly hardy esc. I'd also recommend the hobbywing 880 which is made for 2 motors and is rated for up to 4s use

I think the xl5 is very underrated and SHOULD handle it fine. As always your mileage might vary.

I did look at them for my clods but decided to go with the EVX2 as it was designed for that (and I wanted to run 14.4v).
