Silverado 281 Posted June 14, 2020 I was looking for nice re re buggy or maybe a rally car.. but somehow I was pulled towards this. A member once told me( ThunderDragonCy), that these buggys are good base for a truggy basher , so I thought why not and ordered this. Great value kit at just under 100€ ,much needed hop ups included like bearings(sadly metal shielded),better servo saver and steel dog bones etc. Nice! I will use Futaba S3003 servo (because the crappy BEC in the esc wont work with Savox stuff sadly... ) ESC is Castle Sidewinder 3 SCT, a bit modified by me.(9 year old ESC lol) Motor will be Hobbywing 4 pole 4600kv sensorless bashing motor. Radio is Flysky GT3C and I just like the tiny cheap receivers! 1st step is the body(this will be converted to a truggy soon) ,so I trimmed and washed and masked it. Paint will be gunmetal by Tamiya. Well actually the paint is curing right now. Notice the JIS drivers on the left, helps with the JIS screws really! The next step is the chassis, some foam tape for battery slot and 4 screws to hold the chassis together(4? you thought there is only 3 right? ) The 4th screw is holding the front stray and it is 15mm long. that finally closed the tiny gap at front I thought was manufacturing error first(I know, shame on me for not trusting Tamiya )
ruebiracer 1046 Posted June 14, 2020 This is a great kit indeed. Think about getting one for my nephew for the fighter cup. Could you make a photo for me of the red rims? In the Advertisings they often look quite dark red. Are they really so dark, or is it the photos taken? And could you post the spare part number for the wheels? I can´t find them anywhere as single parts. Maybe they are a limited Hopup? Kind regards and much fun for the build, Matthias

Silverado 281 Posted June 15, 2020 Last evening I had a hour or so building time. YAY! The body is ready. Next the servo saver, black edition hi-torgue version. Steering turnbuckles All ready Installed to chassis Front arms And skid I like using threadlocker on all metal to metal parts. C hubs and uprights, again black Front end is done. Next the gearbox. Weird new kind of grease included, looks like thick silicone grease. This may give a tiny bit of lsd differential effect All the gears installed and motor. Notice the hollow light weight shafts included in the black edition. Gearbox is ready! Rear arms on! Rear end is ready, going to sleep a few hours now. -Pate

And good progress on your build, looks very promising so far. keen on the end result!
Silverado 281 Posted June 15, 2020 Gearbox is installed next Then to the shocks... because this is black edition ,Tamiya choose to replace the normal black ones with grey units 🧐 I used green slime on my shock builds, seals better with it. Dampeners done and installed to the towers Then they are screwed on the chassis Then on to the wiring. next the tires are installed to the rims, did not use glue , the rubbers are really tight fitJust the wing to go on and the build is done. 7
ThunderDragonCy 7878 Posted June 16, 2020 Looks great that! The Racing Fighter body has definitely grown on me over the years.
Roguet 35 Posted June 16, 2020 Nice build, really looking forward to mine turning up at the end of the week. I know a few people don't like the style of this car and maybe it is a bit marmite but I really like it.
gregdogghurst 321 Posted June 16, 2020 That looks gooood. The black wiring and overall colour scheme is ace 👍🏽 As is the build mat-where you get that from? Greg
Silverado 281 Posted June 17, 2020 Thanks for the compliments. The pit mat is TA500908136 , I got it from Modellbau berlinski

The original (large) Tamiya pit mat has item number 42250. I'm not claiming that it's better though!

Juls1 1661 Posted June 21, 2020 Really love the DT03 as a great sand rail and general bash machine, a few of the things I've found with the DT03 for bashing is. 1. Replace the alloy pinion gear immediatly, do not use the transmission with the included pinion gear. Tamiya part 54629 for 19T or 54628 for 17T are steel, and don't wear, resulting in a perfectly clean long lasting gearbox. The stock alloy pinion wears rapidly and fills the gearbox with aluminum, ruining the whole thing. 2. the adjustable upper arms are not that great on the basher, the ball joints constantly pop off, leaving you having to retrieve the car constantly thats not broken, but might as well be. the standard plastic upper arms are far more reliable for bashing. 3. DF03 dampers are a substantial upgrade, not least because they are about 5-10mm longer, giving more travel and more ground clearance but also dramatically improved damping and bottom out resistance if built properly, alternatively Gmade XD dampers are suitable, 75mm up from, rear can be 90 or 100mm versions, not as smooth as tamiya but equally durable. Reccomend the carbon towers for extra shock positions. 4. The steel dogbones are less of a upgrade than they first appear, the plastic setup is incredibly durable. The steel units seem to wear quickly and are easily bent and rust at the thought of a beach run. If you must get rid of the plastic dogbones, go straight for the CVD's tamiya part 53791, you will also require 53790. All in all though, its a great tough car, I've got my DT03 Black build here, just need to finish it and post it up, but My black edition, will be a shelf queen. For me the best part about the black edition is the black chassis. the inclusion of turnbuckles and metal dogbones is a step backwards unless you are racing. ThunderDragonCy 7878 Posted June 21, 2020 @Juls1 Interesting point on longer shocks. Might have to try out my 75mm fronts, on my DT03 truck. Regarding the steel driveshafts, the main improvement i found is that they offer more articulation so they don't bind and restrict suspension travel. It's particularly apparent if you use my 3 deg toe in rear uprights, as these don't bind on the lower arms like the kit ones do and are narrower for steel driveshafts only. I got about 10mm more ground clearance at the rear even with the stock shock using these.
Silverado 281 Posted June 21, 2020 Managed to try the buggy out for few minutes before work. 2s Lipo And had to try the 3s also, ripped the tires of the wheels lol. Anyway ,was fun morning outside with the wife and our 3 kids. -Pate
Silverado 281 Posted July 12, 2020 I just ordered the DT-03T wheels and ProLine Trencher T 2.2 tires. Also 2 bodies the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor for stampede(256mm wb, may be too short) and the 3471-00 raptor also, that ThunderDragonCy used on his mighty build. yes I remembered to get the mad bull uprights also WIll try to atleast truggy this thing up or monsterize. I also ordered parts needed to convert the shocks to use better internal bits and 17t steel pinion . the 4700kv motor is crazy on this light car ! Silverado 281 Posted July 12, 2020 Hmm now this thing is getting expensive... but I was thinking of getting a basher, stampede or slash... but heck I will build this to be the ultimate basher.... not the cheapest way of getting a basher but atleast the thing will be TAMIYA when done
Silverado 281 Posted July 13, 2020 Did the shoxk rebuild with the parts recomenned by Thunderdragoncy. Used 2 hole pistons and tamiya medium 600cst oil. Much firmer now , but the rear is still soft... -hmm I do have some stuff on my shock bag, like clodbuster shocks! The Clod springs are much firmer and a bit longer but without the preload spacers the suspension feels great now. cant be sure untill I get to drive this ,but the drop test says it is good! Silverado 281 Posted July 21, 2020 The tires were a nightmare to glue, had to cut the inserts a bit and still they did not seat 100% still, the look is nice imo.
Carmine A 2046 Posted July 22, 2020 @Silverado That's one classy Ride!! 👌👍👍 Two of my good friends have DT-03s, and report that they are as stout as any TRAXXASS!! 😜 I'm dying to get one myself.... If I catch a lucky break, I will. TBH, when you first mentioned "Truggy".... I had awful images of the 90's Jello Mold BLOBS, that were as far from Scale as an RC can get. 😲😖 This did not end up that way! Nice Body, tastefully done, on a Chassis that's definitely the Business!! 👍👍😁 Cheers 🍻
Silverado 281 Posted July 23, 2020 I just ordered the titan racing truck dt-02... i also have raptor body for stampede and orange blitzer wheels... oh and losi rock claws 2.2 ( 12.7mm high). guess another build is soon on the forum lol
