my yokomo yz10 94 restoration

Recommended Posts

so a few months ago I managed to get my hands on a yokomo yz10 94, a car that I had back in the day and craved for one ever since. unfortunately the prices have rocketed on these in recent years so I was resigned to the fact I probably couldn't afford one, until this one came available within my budget so I snapped it up.

IMG_3706.jpg.d85ff0d796a29f00a6b8e1046ad3276f.jpgIMG_3702.jpg.b0b5e62425ec2e675a85d599a7374ca3.jpgIMG_3703.jpg.0d8043ff5d4b05b9f979a85d325c5b14.jpg

I was pretty chuffed, I was in pretty good shape, original and all there. initially I had decided to strip and rebuild it, clean it and then put it on display. some of the parts looked a bit manky and the wishbones had been drilled so I decided to keep my eyes open for a few parts to make this a really nice example. well to cut a long story short things got out of hand and after I got chatting to a couple of very helpful people, id ordered a ton of nos parts for the car, and suddenly this became a shelf queen restoration!

IMG_3707.jpg.f0ffdc9fa04d8ef31c240bbbabdbf1db.jpg

so after a couple of months passed id finally sourced most of the parts I need as above, still a couple of small bits left but I couldn't wait to get started. so I started to strip the old girl down

IMG_3708.jpg.fc318e06c9ad311ebdccae6adb33dcd2.jpg

ive done a few restorations before and I tend to do an end at a time, that way I find it easier to remember what goes where! so true to form I started at the front.

first up new wishbones!

IMG_3709.jpg.b3a5492fe0b4c5787164620ee1644aca.jpg

I didn't realise how faded and yellowed the white parts were, so new diff pulleys were installed and a new white steering servo saver was fitted, including new hardware throughout.  I also replaced the gearbox housing, nothing wrong with the old one, but id somehow managed to buy two new ones without realising!

IMG_3711.jpg.af586a246dbea56e4582a4474356752f.jpg

so then it was on to a set of new top arms, I decided to replace the white ends with the pavidis black ends, mainly because they were all I could get hold of nos.

IMG_3714.jpg.2ac8a3d55ac766b89b54a3ca219def4e.jpgIMG_3715.jpg.02e99a91c2c90048067cc1e9f16f6890.jpg

old servo saver

IMG_3718.jpg.ca21202ad4994f9e65203dbacf97285f.jpg

vs new!

IMG_3720.jpg.3f13080e27570b58adab17c56e4a7365.jpgIMG_3721.jpg.0961a94a864539499e8e4754fc9d9548.jpg

next it was on to the corners, more new packets opened and, new knuckles, c hubs, kingpins and refurbished driveshafts fitted.

IMG_3726.jpg.c1c4ef2b7eaf7c1d10527f705f545045.jpgIMG_3724.jpg.e5f14331186ac1549dc525ecdcc6d213.jpg

so front end getting back together, I also replaced the shock tower as this had faded badly..

IMG_3729.jpg.cb59ccb602a4f5318488a4b74ac3451a.jpgIMG_3730.jpg.a77c25750db98445e0d7b3f912b726dc.jpg

so front end pretty much complete, I cleaned up the top deck posts, replaced a couple of incorrect battery posts and it was on to the motor mount. once removed this actually looks quite messy!

IMG_3735.jpg.ef3e02f4ec54763780e882fe8f6fa801.jpgIMG_3734.jpg.c52a46ad1790bed4f01765df6bbc1fae.jpgIMG_3736.jpg.f725fb723c243ffcc4740270f8b8f0f8.jpgIMG_3737.jpg.bf6591fce0cd428bef45847490215133.jpg

so a bit of elbow grease and a couple more packets opened and it looked much better!

IMG_3739.jpg.afab94b868489a3f895ca23c77668568.jpgIMG_3740.jpg.c1f2475eed7c43526fdebd951690e0cc.jpgIMG_3741.jpg.c832a8b7f34574d9ef5f938e55f9619c.jpg

and the finished result!
IMG_3742.jpg.394b10f690943102e692ba7ba4fc5f8b.jpgIMG_3743.jpg.b9fbabab8d00a026851fa2bcdc7d5c5f.jpgIMG_3744.jpg.d64c8e15e9eeddfc97969ba6db5ac7b3.jpgIMG_3745.jpg.a38ece8931cd7ff7a76e7e714a6c9b7b.jpgIMG_3747.jpg.79d8918f5ad1ed116fffbb46a1bf3016.jpgIMG_3748.jpg.15020a8cd156b2ef8028bb92b8c2c454.jpg

so then it was on to the back, similar story to the front, lots of new packets opened, plastics replaced. and again, diff pulley replaced!

IMG_3712.jpg.75e5d89217bfc45dc0c8c6ceacce868e.jpg

IMG_3749.jpg.82998988020a34cf3f50a4638949ccbc.jpg

new wishbones!

IMG_3750.jpg.067339296aa7bfd9d71858d3923ccbf8.jpgIMG_3752.jpg.c0496387360d48d26054071ef02276bb.jpg

and same at the rear I replaced the yellowed shock tower

IMG_3753.jpg.430bcf87dc0cdd7b4ad6c8dc4f142e32.jpgIMG_3754.jpg.3b9a57fbc54dab27b32972d82851df28.jpgIMG_3755.jpg.9add7614ce66ea0956e6b7acc8211e60.jpg

so starting to take shape now

IMG_3756.jpg.8965baea57eb337850af337dfd76d60c.jpg

to finish the chassis restoration off I replaced the alloy hubs with some shiny new ones, #and also replaced the yokomo shocks with a very nice set of nos associate rc10 shocks, which I think look amazing!

IMG_3757.jpg.9d4608aeebb5b93b382e27b01450b452.jpgIMG_3758.jpg.3f0d9fd570fff81a5f94f69f27c7b5c1.jpg

last up was the battery holders, got some very nice reproduction ones from factory works.

IMG_3760.jpg.ddd36d4cdbf81981cc2f4d9bde539427.jpg

and here's the progress so far..

IMG_3761.jpg.27ac98268d912f703cd988d1d9471ecd.jpgIMG_3762.jpg.1737287f7eafd36dfb69f54112868863.jpgIMG_3763.jpg.52d176905b0947285ea03c527504a9df.jpgIMG_3764.jpg.417dbd7481c7df79d5764d5957c80681.jpgIMG_3765.jpg.974163731be787775d1c5de4f58d10b3.jpgIMG_3766.jpg.6bf00e11fba5740cac700b69f19a906d.jpg

so Im super happy with how its looking. I have a nos set of white wheels and some rit dye, so will be dying those black in the next day or so, and a bodyshell away being painted as we speak.

I need to order a couple of screws and a few other small parts to get this to exactly where I want. ill add some more to this thread once I get some time and some more parts, but for now I hope you enjoyed! apologies some of the pictures aren't the correct way up, I couldn't seem to work that one out!!

So today, I finally bit the bullet and dyed my nos white yokomo wheels, and they came out great! I was almost tempted to leave them white incase I screwed them up, thankfully all went well!

I made up a bit of a rig to stop them from touching the bottom of the pan..

set them to boil for 10 minutes, added the dye and left them to simmer for two hours,

decided to use the bbq hob, didn’t think the mrs would appreciate me dying her white kitchen black!B1942526-E74D-4948-BA1B-D81F501A29F8.jpeg.2e6fa40aef0a1ed9d8fef5ae620f9d4c.jpeg

and the finished product..

And finished off with a nos set of yokomo hot laps !

Getting very close to finish now.. wheels on, new bumper fitted, body shell and under tray trimmed and fitted, just waiting for some decals, a few screws and to decide on what colour wing to fit! 6443C3F4-9B67-4A3A-95F9-D129E059CEA2.jpeg.167409616b6213e952937ad22076d3be.jpeg

Very nice, this reminds of how Tamiya was pre-rere.  Remember how hard it was to find an Avante Driver? An Avante/Egress gearbox? Ive been on the hunt for one of these, the YZ10 will be a nice compliment to my OG RC10 worlds.   Are the parts like the suspension arms etc Nylon like the Associate RC10? Is brittle plastic an issue? I like running all of mine.  Hated when I couldnt run my one Avante back in the day.

im not too sure what the wishbones are made of on these, but the yz10's are like tanks, very very robust. great for vintage racing if you can get one at the right price, im currently building a vintage runner, i just ideally need a pair of replacement rear drive shafts for it which are proving tricky to find!

i wish i had of bought an rc10 worlds rere when they were first re relased, sadly i didnt thinking id get one later on.. fool!!

Building mine I learned there isn't much difference between a vintage team car and worlds. I took a near mint vintage Team car and updated it to worlds spec using vintage parts for nearly 50 percent less than a worlds Rere.
