This tread are great! I have never seen so manny special cars! I looked up all the mentiond cars an I would have to say that I like every one of them:-) But by Fugly you guys are meaning sort of charming ugly right? If thats not right, if you are after just ugly cars, (no outer beuty and no inner soul) I must say I agree 100% with Theo. And Tamiya are not the worst. I am can't remeber the name of the buggy that startet this, but i remeber from the old Kyosho catalougs. First there where Optima and Rocky and Turbo bouth, and I wanted bouth badly. Then there where the ultimas and then the Lazers. Maybe not that exiting, but nice cars too. Then it all went to **** for Kyosho electro buggies! It has a name like ARR somthing with yellow wheels. I can't seem to find it but I guess it is the car that was before the Zaboon! Could someone please post a pic ore a link to this cheapish looking ugly car and back me up! Kyosho really deservs slaughter for doing such a thing with their tradition in producing nice electro buggies.

Wireless.... now that is ugly. I know I'm not one of the best looking persons on this globe, but the guy who has designed that .... thing.... Do they still have the death penalty for designing errors??

Great thread Darryn.[8D] I can't wait to see the results in R/C Car magazine (provided it goes to print but i'm sure it will).

Some interesting fuglies so far but the one that really surprises me is the Striker, especially when you compare it to some of weird looking machines already mentioned in this thread. Sure it's not everybody's idea of a decent rc car but it's not really that ugly - just a little different!

Anyway here's my picks:

TAMIYA -The good old Manta Ray - great chassis, drive train and suspension but what were Tamiya thinking when they designed that bodyshell. And now they're about to re-release it![xx(]

I remember years ago when the Super Sabre was released. I believe it was a turning point for Tamiya as far as body styling goes. Most Tamiya cars up to that point had an air of realism. The Super Sabre had a new age look - 'spacetech engineering' was the term used and it was continued on the Thundershot, Avante and other subsequent cars.

I don't reckon the Super Sabre, Thundershot and Avante looked all that bad but it did start a new trend for Tamiya that slowly got worse[V].

NON-TAMIYA -Fastboy beat me to it -the Traxxis TRX-1. I'll admit that I did race one of these many years ago and they were a great car as far as performance goes but the shell looked like it was from another planet. I guess it wasn't molded like that for good looks but more for the purpose of aerodynamics - basically one huge wing on wheels[:)] but it was very effective.

I'm sure there's loads more but those ones stand out for me.

The TRX-1 body looks like a cylon fighter from the new battlestar galactica! did the old series fighter looked the same? If so, then I know were the designer got his inspiration...

I don't know... these are all some pretty pitiful car designs, but that Cox Bandido is horrible. The designer should have been fired immediately after submitting the sketches for that thing. A pic of that could scare off a mugger.[:0]

Don't worry give it time [;)] I run hot & cold with the F150 regularly.

guys, i've got you all beat. this has to be the ugliest r/c car of all time, but the catch is, my total investment in it is zero dollars, zero cents. that's why i named it Project Zero. it's made entirely from leftovers and broken bits of other (better)cars. even the AA's in the transmitter were there when i started the build. it's "powered" by an airplane prop (i didn't have a leftover tranny), and the suspension doesn't match left to right. performance matches the investment, but it does get about. there are a few Tamiya bits in here, but nothing precious or irreplaceable, so don't hate me.

since it rolls on buggy wheels (leftovers, natch) it falls within the scope of this poll, so there.

this one says it all

Hello "Old Busted Hotness" - while in Bart Simpsons words this car is indeed " craptacular " it doesnt come within the scope of the poll. [:(]

It is for the ugly car designes - bot concoctions of cars.[:D]

Many thanks though,

Cheers

And then this recent addition- Viva Bandido!!! (sorry BrattJunkie)

Notice the Bandido parts?

bah, humbug!

then i nominate the no-name cheeseball nitro buggies that pop up on eBay and haunt local hobby shops with parts requests. nobody knows who makes them, and their design and build quality is second only to my own creation. the bodies aren't that great looking either.

You got it, 'Busted!

Three letters come to mind: C - E - N : Man that stuff looks like some real ****!

(and that's one of the few that actually have a name!)

Yeah, I saw that , Champ. I think he was talking about the Pegasus though.

What do I know!? Maybe the Pegasus shares the same chassis with the Bandido?

I've never owned any of these, but I know they have one thing in common...[:o)]

Sorry Darryn,

We were having a "who can have the most pointless 'fugliest' postings" contest.

I'm winning!

LOL

I will tally up the results so far in the next day......hopefully we can get some more votes - as if there are not many - well it is going to be hard to sell it to the editor![8)]

I plan on doing a mini review of sorts on some of the ugliest with a bit of background on the cars and who they were produced by..........

Striker = Left over F1 body throwen onto off-road chassis

Hotshot = Because my mate had one and he used to beat my Grasshopper

Hotshot 2 = Because it's the same has Hotshot, see above description.

Falcon

Bigwig

Super Sabre

Thunder Shot, Thunder Dragon

Sonic Fighter = Sonic the Hedgehog wouldn't be seen dead in it.

As I see it every buggy after the Wild One. Mr Tamiya must have started taking some wicked drugs after that. Not only did he stop making probaly his best sellers, but it seems like he met someone from NASA or similar and thought........... Well who knows what he thought.

This discussion is missing a couple of candidates IMO......

saurus.jpg

Kyosho Nissan Saurus - Nice chassis shame about the shell (and to think it was a real concept car!)

Kyosho Boogie Box - Errrr????

nothing more needs to be said [;)]

i'd also like to nomonate -

Mammoth dump truck (i've got one and it is but ugly - nice bit of kit though [:)])

Thundershot - i had to bin the shell mine came with! such an ugly looking buggy, but put a car body on it and it starts to look alot better [:D] i opted for a googley eyed subaru impraza shell.

Gixer,

not sure about uS side of the pond, but back in the uK Bolink had the Digger 'off road' car.

Terry SC would be the best guy to shed light on this thing, but I do remember seeing top 12th scale dude Andy Dobson running one. They were fibreglass plate design, next to no suspension unless you count chassis flex...

can't remember how ugly the car was, but the driver certainly was....

I have some pics in old uK model cars from about 1985.

id="quote">id="quote">

As my name has been mentioned I guess I'd better prove Stu right on who would know. So I don't hijack the thread I've posted the history of the Digger here http://www.tamiyaclub.com/xforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=25135

While looking for pictures of the original Bolink Digger I came across a few contenders for this thread.

It's interesting reading everyone's opinion of what constitutes ugly. For example the Traxxas TRX-1 ain't pretty (why did they have a split screen window in a single seater?) but it is more bland and boring rather than a deliberate design ***-up.

img3019_18052004223813_2_350.jpg

No real thought went into the body design so it avoided being actually ugly by design. Modern bodies are plain and boring, but they are designed that way for performance and this has always happened, it's not just a new idea.

Other bland performance designs from the 80s are the Robbe Navajo - something not quite right with the cockpit, hints of the bandito there.

navajo.jpg

The Robbe Geronimo - an 'aerodymanic' shaped cockpit on a body designed purely to fit over the chassis. Kyosho did the same thing with the Mid Custom Special as well and that didn't work either.

geronimo.jpg

And the Schumacher Futura body - aerodynamics were in at the time but no one swapped their lovely CAT XLS body for one of these things

futura.jpg

In a similar style is the Marui Ninja, but the small details make it a bit less ugly.

ninja.jpg

The Cox Bandito is especially ugly, but that's because it was deliberately designed that way. In design it is very similar to the Kyosho Raider and the Tamiya Falcon, but whoever decided to stick those spotlights on the front just condemed it to ugliness.

I think the Falcon is pretty ugly, the proportions are all wrong. I think the rear end actually looks better on the Striker.

falcon.jpg

I also agree with Chris about the Bush Devil. The pink wheels aren't so bad, but the body is hideous. Glad my Devil came without body, strangely I'm not interested in fitting an original back on. Talking of Tamiya trucks I give another vote for the F150 - a truck with so much positive camber on the rear wheels? It just looks all wrong.

Other ugly contenders are the MUGEN (Hi Herbaculum!) Mercury, developed from the Bulldog. What are those dampers all about?

mugen%20merc.jpg

It even looks ugly without the body!

mercury.jpg

Another Nichimo, the Cosmo Shooter. That body just means speed (not!)

cosmo%20shooter.jpg

The racing Bolink Digger wasn't too bad with the body on

diggerbody.jpg

But it was ugly without it.

digger102.jpg

From the world of rallycross (where everyone complains they all look the same these days - thankfully we don't have to put with these horrible bodies again!)

The PB Mustang Xi2 - yes a token cockpit has been dropped on wherever it would fit - and nowhere near the centreline.

mustangXi2.jpg

Finally something modern. The Trinity Itsy Bitsy Spyder. It looks good from certain angles in adverts, but in one colour it's hideous!

spyder1.jpg

Finally, the worst of the worst, the Mantua Nevada Cross. Lets take a high performance racing buggy and make it look like a cheap toy!

mantua.jpg

Finally Stu, here's a picture of the ugly bloke Andy Dobson, here pictured with Ernie Provetti of Trinity. Guess which one is which.
