Remember when Sears actually sold Tamiya cars. This is a page from the '84 Sears Wish Book. I don't know if Sears was available in countries outside the u.S., but I'm sure everyone will find this interesting.

Breck, I'm surprised they didn't sell them in CA. I was told by a friend who used to live in CA that Sears had the same exact book and items there, but the prices were the only difference. I should grab a CA Wish Book off Ebay and see if they are the same.

I remember Sears selling them!! That is great and brought back memories of the Sears Wish Book! I remember they had the Falcon, Grasshopper, and Hornet. I also remember Kay-Bee toy store also had the Grasshopper and Falcon as complete kits.

The Brat actually looks like a cheap toy in that picture!

That's great. I never knew Sears sold them...

I do remember when Toys'R'Us sold them though.. They use to have long glass display case that was the entire length of the isle way filled with R/C cars. Blackfoot, Grasshopper, Hornet, ect.. You use to have to take a slip from the display case for the vehicle you wanted and take that slip to the front of the store where they had all the kits in storage. I use to spend countless hours in the R/C isle at Toys'R'Us just staring!! Oh, great memories..

Me too Gixer. I was one of those drooling fools too, just staring through the glass security case at the few Tamiya models my local Toys R us sold. [V]

Do you also remember The Price Club sold some MRC Combo packs like Blackfoot, Monster Beetle etc...

There was also a company called Consumers that sold a few of the earlier Tamiya Models like The Hornet, Frog, Fox etc...

There was nothing like our youth when we first discovered this Fantastic Plastic.[:P]

Sears used to sell them in the toy section in the stores. Sears had a toy section for a long time until they had a marketing redesign in the 80s.

Years ago (1991? or so), Toy r us all stopped selling Tamiya RC cars. The story goes that MRC (US Tamiya distributor) would not do anything in regards to defects or returns from Toy r us. The cars started piling up in the warehouse or stores. They all seemed to end up at a very large swap meet. They were all built with radios and batteries. Each one had something wrong with it. Minor scratches, missing or mismatched crystals etc. Some just needed radio adjustments. We bought about 40 or 50 of them. All Blackfoots. As I recall we paid $15 each for them. We used them for IROC races. When they broke we actually tossed some of them out. OUCH! Does anyone know if the ones at toy r us were built? I think they were. I often wonder who built them all. Jim

Jim,

I only recall the Toys R uS Black Foot's being available in kit form. I even remember at one point seeing a notice by them in the showcases saying "The Black Foot etc. require assembly". But it is possible that Toys was offering to build them for you for an extra fee like most of the hobby stores did back in the 80's.

Yes I remeber seeing Tamiya in the sears catalog and thought it was really cool. I also seen the grasshopper on a TV ad once.

Side note

The movie Gremlins has a pink barbie body on top of a F150 Ranger chassis.
