Project return to the track Trf415ms

Recommended Posts

I should of done a build thread of my racer trf419 conversion to mid mount motor and also rebuilt a Tb evo 4ms to Return to indoor racing in 17.5t stock.

this is the next project as I really like trf / Tb evo chsssis and want one of each! 😱 wife says no thou! 😂

purchased a few weeks ago, this Trf415ms, and now plan to strip and rebuild and have ready to run again at indoor track I frequent. More for fun as want to see how much it differs from the 419. And also a fun chassis to play with.
possibly put ars on it, can’t decide..

here’s the initial pics and updates to follow. Might be a slow build as although furloughed a wife, toddler and 6month old all stuck at home time is something I don’t have much of at the moment! 😂

Definitely needed doing!

also spotted it had regular front bulkheads not the ones with MS on,  identical so no issue.

but MS ones going back on! :)

Appears it wasn’t shimmed correct! 😪

think it’s ok, just needs a clean and ill shim so it doesn’t Catch anymore. Can’t be seen so not massively worried...

Out of it all, just one fatality, 👎 apparently a common issue.
tried to drill the grub screw out, was going ok but snapped all three drill bits at a certain depth. Hadn’t made it through to the shaft. Unsure what went wrong.

a used replacement on the way for a few quid off fb group.

The wife is on the phone, so have a few spare mins.

lets get started.

chassis plate had some glue type stuff on the underside, after some scrubbing and wiping managed to remove it all. As clean as it’s going to get so off we go...

Trial fit of a 419 gear diff, 37t instead of 35, tried the 415 belt but wouldn’t fit even at max slackness on diff adjusters.

50062687813_2835cac458_b.jpg

swapped to the 419 belt and started centred, had to move to 2nd away and fits good.

just need to shim the diff as it’s narrower so once done will be good to go.

Turns out it doesn’t run that smooth, belt is tightening up and slackening off.

fitted a new trf419 belt and too big.

So after some research, and following  ‘theRCracer’ build from a few years back.
I have managed to locate a 415msxxmr centre shaft with bigger Pulleys, so it will make the 419 belts run ok, and also with a 20t pulley, assuming they physically fit, will drop the internal ratio down to same as 419.

Next frustration found! Had heard I may have to do this!
front 37t pulley needs drilling to fit the 415 spool, but centre hole is slightly bigger, so need to come up with a way to hold in central. 🤔 thinking ptfe wrapped round the spool till it holds in place.

rebuilt ball diff and Ali outdrives.

ready to go back in the chassis so I can fully build the car back up.

impatient so want to build it even if it means taking bulkheads off again to fit all the gear diff conversion kit.

So, had an hour tonight, stripped out the gesr didf and replaced with original diff.

built up as much as I could. Reusing original car parts with a good clean.

knuckles aren’t great so will replace them, one is very tight for no obvious reason. So will our new ones on.

missing a steering bearing sadly, the 630 flanged ones. So will have to order one or a pair.

moving along nicely, plan to give it a drive around the culdessc i wait for the centre pulley to arrive..

Not much time tonight.

ordered bearings for steering brace so hopefully may arrive tomorrow/Thursday so can finish building it up.
sad news the motor I had spare is toast. So need to find a cheap second hand 13.5t brushless.

rebuilt dampers fitted and a few other bits,  nothing major tonight.

just sat with his non-identical and bigger brother! 😀

Looking really good mate. By god they made this chassis complicated IMO

Thanks! :)

yeah it’s quite tricky to work on the drive train for sure, have to take the bulkheads off every time you wanna adjust it.
I see now why ‘rcracer’ in his latest 415 build did the drivetrain and bulkheads first. So much easier to access without the sus blocks and arms in the way. Could just slide on off alter and slide back.
the later ones had split bulkheads like we are used to seeing these days.. :)

New bearings for steering arm arrived. Quick and prompt delivery from these guys

https://www.bearingoptions.co.uk/mf63-zz-metal-shielded-flanged-miniature-bearing-3mm-x-6mm-x-25mm-11529-p.asp

fit perfect as expected.

50094619396_cb170d0da4_b.jpg

when building I found the 1mm spacer could be reduced to 0.7 and it removed some play In the steering so pleased I spent the time doing this.

Starting to look a bit more like a car now.

the four support posts haven’t been fitted to allow the chassis to flex a bit. As with them in there is literally no flex.

if it handles ok, like this as I expect it to, I’ll may get the carbon plates cut with out the wings to tidy it all up a bit more.

need to replace the front knuckles, and finish off the drive shafts with outer bearings and hexes.
then it’s a matter of waiting for the centre pulley before finishing the build.
I had planned to have a drive of it as it should be In kit form, but the motor I had planned to fit which I had spare is toast, so i need to wait now and save up for a replacement. 😪

No rush thou as my local track is unlikely to be opening any time soon. 😭

Goodies for the 415 arrived this week. 415msxxmr pulley shaft with selection of pulley sizes.
I wanted 20s to fit but think it’ll be 18s initially due to belt sizes I have.

50152365867_38e803bed7_b.jpg

bit boring but here’s the diff I had spare.
stripped and drained old very thick oil from it over night, and cleaned and refilled with 3k.

also fitted larger pins to the out gears as have some that fit better from h2rd.

50149405706_3d47d28d62_b.jpg

trial fit before diff rebuild. Looks neat I think and nice and smooth.

some belt goodness arrived. Picked up cheap so figured I’d go for it and try to get 20t centre pulleys in. Should bring internal ratio to 1.85 meaning same as my 419

420 rear belt worked a charm, just off centre on adjusters and all good.

fromt, not perfect but ok, looks like a 170t belt would be ok, this is 169 and on max closeness on adjusters and just ok. Hopefully a bit of give on belt when running it for a bit.

its weird coz the 171t belt was really slack and 167 mega tight, so middle road should of worked. 🤷‍♂️ But it’s in and albeit a bit tight now running as I wanted..

starting to look like a chassis again. Not gonna win any beauty contests but going to run as I want as a outdoor car.

had a selection of chassis plates with the car, appears I have some 415 and some ms plates. Built up on a normal plate as ms one very clean. So will save for indoor action.

might redrill the sus blocks holes as different on the normal plates, 3mm further apart so ideally need  48.5 shafts or may just redrill

as a race car.

needs lots yet to be race ready!

Diff leaks too! 😭

it was one from my 419 from previous owner and had very heavy oil.
when rebuilding I found brass bushings instead of bearings which I swapped back to bearings, so now not sure if they are the cause or the rubber o rings  inside.
they are the red ones, and I have somE new ones, so may have to rebuild after I’ve test drove it.. And fit near o rings 🤦‍♂️

Cool project! Retromod TRF415 without changing the looks (much).
