Cool project! Retromod TRF415 without changing the looks (much).

Thanks! I like it. Should be interesting to see how it runs. I’m hoping it will feel similar to my 419 as it’ll be almost identical setup albeit 10 years older..

Picked up a dirt cheap motor off Facebook. Speed passion 13.5t mmm job. So decided I’d trial fit and give it a whirl.

arbs not fitted properly so took them off.

using a esc someone Gave me, a hobby wing xerun, budget servo also  in,  thou will be replaced by a Savox 1251/52 at some point and airing all done neat as I can.

it ran really really well on the road. No issues found as yet.

so onto the next jobs! 👍

lipo fitment, I want to keep the connections to the rear to keep everything nice and short. And also keep the lipo with in the dimensions of the carbon chassis.

so need to mod the top deck.

bit later and ended up with this.

Also removed some section so I can run without the tensioner just to give the belt a touch more slack.

all clears well and looks good.

some servo stays and a filed down nut keep the lipo right where I want it.

Progressing slowly to a finished product! 👍

So As I tried it and found it pretty quick, even on lipos at around storage charge.
I downloaded a iPhone app to measure speed, to see how it compared to my main indoor racer.

quite Suprised at the difference, but it must be down to the motor/esc as fdr is similar.

419-  trackstar 13.5t 116:35 (1.85) FDR 6.13:1 - max speed 17mph

415- speed passion mmm 13.5t 103:34 (1.85) FDR 5.60:1 - max speed 26mph

Really need to alter the settings in the esc in the 415 to be 100% it’s not running boost. It doesn’t sound like it is.

Her le we go...

so now technically some of the old car is here, it’s probably really another chassis! 😂 it’s getting the ms conversion so it’s well on the way to a msx so has different bulkheads to make getting to the diffs and lsyshaft easier. But, means a lipo won’t fit properly, so now I’m trying to find the non motor mount side, stick pack conversion bulkhead pieces to rectify the poor lipo fitment, or I may run shortie lipos instead and add ballast weight.

this has all the running gear from the first attempt so is still gear diff and spool with 20t pulleys in the middle, making it the same fdr as my 419.

doh!

I built with a nice new brace I had, but the kit one has recesses in for the flange nearing tolet it sit flush, then it doesn’t foul the bulkheads, 🤦‍♂️
yup found out the long way! 😢

To run or not to run, that is the question! 😂

they are used And have a little dink on each, but not sure if they should go on a shelfer really, 🤔 but I don’t really do shelfers..

Guess it depends on how upset you will be when they get smashed/broken at the track and how easy replacements are to find? They look beautiful.

rare and hard to find, was lucky they were in the box of a car I bought! 😲

think it’s more an issue that they bend with big impacts, guess not crashing would sort it! 😬

had some spec r drive shafts in my evo 5 a while back, and kept hold of the pins as they have a flat on them, so you can get a good grip on them with the grub screw.

also treating it to new aluminium rear wheel spindles, but only on the rear, I’m sure I’ll bend them up front! 😣

all the way from a friend in Hong Kong,  rc cox X-ray 0 degree hub carriers which can be used to form rear ars. Had planned on fitting to my indoor racer but ars is better suited outdoor so at some point I’ll configure and fit to this.. :)

just a bit of minor trimming and they’ll fit perfectly..

test fitted these I found in the box from when I bough the car, nice ally lay shaft bearing holders.

found that I need a different top plate cos they don’t sit flush like the plastic ones.

so hoping to acquire a couple of the lay shaft covers off a msxxmr I think it is.

50343177166_9bf7e96e03_b.jpg

then I will have the ability to shim the msxxmr lay shaft to stop the front belt catching slightly at spur side.

to avoid major issues I’m going to run a 3000mah shortie, as fits nicely where the bulkhead permits.

will have to add some weight thou to get close to the target weight. 1350g I think from memory..

50343192761_f4c61cc35e_b.jpg

planning a steering conversion, basically the msxxmr layout so much lower profile like the 419.

but will require a servo relocation,:so easiest way I can see is to fit a floating servo holder, couple of holes in the plate and its relocated easily. Now to find one, went through the manuals and 417v5 onwards have them.

snyone got a spare on they don’t want? 😬

but opening a can of worms, have the arms and bridge secured, possibly posts as well, which I’ll trim right down and make a small brace like the 419.

will have to redrill the chsssis as the holes need to be further back than they are now.

guess there is only so much you can do on the orig so plate With upgrading Kits before you Have to splash out on the up to date plate. But I am going to try. 👍

this is my outdoor car but also my ‘tinkering car’ so will keep trying to do what I feel I can for now..
