I've seen one for sale for what I feel is a good price (£200.00 ono), I've read that they need to be looked after and not bashed like say a Wild Dagger/Stadium Raider/TA01 Hummer, I've also read that the suspension also need modifications to enable it to drive with some sort of "steadiness"?

Questions, are they a good/reasonable buy? and, instead of that what else (a similar type) would be?

Many thanks, Adam.

A Toyota Hilux is a very odd car. Either you love it (the most here on TC) or you hate it. You love it because of its looks, very real world looking, its three speed gearbox, its metal frame, and its technical achievement. You can hate it because of its drive (with standard leafsprings you have alomost none suspension besides the tires, its not-so-ruggedness-as-the-commercial says (rear bumper straight on a runner?? don't think so), its standard use of useless metal bearings etc. etc. BUT I LOVE IT. and 200GBP for a good runner is OK, for a shelf queen is a bargen.

Look at it as you look at an italian sportscar: useless in normal traffic but you really really want one [:D][:D].

Advise: BUY

Are you talking about

Tamiya Hilux 3spd (brother to BlazingBlazer, cousin to Bruiser/Mounty),

or

Tamiya Hilux Monster Racer? (brother to KingCab)

It's the 3 speed model.

I'm just curious, as to what mod's that I'll have to make to it to make it more drivable/reliable before I decide to look at/buy it.

Adamski,

To have a decent drive you need to:

- Ballrace it (prefferably also in the Tranny;

- Replace leafsprings for Bruiser ones;

- Maybe adjust hight of the leafsprings a bit;

Or accept it as it is. You can also think about buying a bruiser/monty instead, these have better drive specs.

3spd Hilux is a fine working Scale model, don't expect it to jump BMX tracks.

Any runner should be fully ballraced.

Dunno if you'd keep the MESC or use a modern ESC instead.

You could keep the suspension stock and just put on Blazer or CrossCountry tyres.

You're not gunna get super suspension with any leaf springs.

2 ways to make the leafs better, replace with bruiser/mounty or jugg for even more lift

or

remove all but a single leaf

also,put bruiser hubs and 2.2 wheels

I've done it and driving offroad works much better

Adam, to give you an idea of what a 3 speed can and cannot do check out the video section of the website. There are many videos of 3 speeds in use and these would give you an idea of how slow and 'bouncy' they are compared to a buggy. But they do look a lot more scale.

If you have ever seen any of the Tamiya 3 speed promo videos... you can't do any of what you saw unless you have about a dozen extra trucks like Tamiya did to replace the damaged one after each stunt performed. [;)]

Honestly they are show trucks and need to be babied unless your willing to spend hundreds of dollars/pounds on modifications for them to be driven hard.
