Xray T2

Recommended Posts

I have had my xray t2 since new in 2006, it has had some good use in 2007 then it sat on a shelf since then. I only have lipo batteries and this model only had a nimh or nicad chassis, so I modified it by removing the front drive belt and fitting the battery across the chassis. I wanted to put some lights on it but didn't have any light buckets, so used some aluminium and made my own fittings to put some lights on. I have used velcro to mount the body for now, but I may put some posts on at a later date.

I have some stickers still to fit, and adjust the wheels in a bit by taking spacers out of the wishbones, I will take a pic of it with the lights on tomorrow

It's not too neat yet.

I have had to return to some old wheels as the new ones dont have enough clearance around the inner face, they catch without spacers, then they stick out too much. The original wheels are a perfect fit, or I have some multispoke ones which fit the same but have slicks glued on.

I am really a fan of the hudy rim design.

I had the white and yellow one’s. It might occur to me, did I saw a third color of those?

Intended first for a FF03 Honda, but they found plsace on the xray, I own a T1FK05.

I have a 3rd wheel choice, these are off my tamiya build, I didn't think they would fit due to the offset.

Now for some fairly large changes, I had decided a while ago that if I'm going to make it into a drift car, that I should try and sort out the steering to allow more steering lock. I have a few schumacher touring cars from the early 00's, so I thought about using the hubs and wishbones as they dont use a c-hub so can allow full steering. They obviously wont all fit together as it is a different design, so I had to get some ideas together. The first mockup was to use the steering in it's original position.

It didn't quite work out as I had wanted, so I had a look at the schumacher stuff again. This is with the schumacher front end. Good steering lock but not good enough as a drift car.

I then decided to run the steering arms through the front diff housing, to hopefully get the full steering lock I'm trying to achieve. This meant turning the steering servo around and angling it to fit easier. I then had nowhere to fit the shocks, as once I do get full steering lock, the shocks would be in the way. Mounting the shock on top seemed like the best idea, but it took a while to decide how to do it with the parts I had in the spares box. It started with a schumacher shock, now it has the xray one. I still need to decide how to make the steering turnbuckles to avoid the hub as the plastic mockup ones touch on 50% lock.

Now with a front anti roll bar, to try and help with front roll. I have yet to try it with any power, as I am waiting for some steering turnbuckles to arrive. The front wheels are an 8mm offset, the rears are 11mm offset, I'm thinking about putting the gold 5mm ones on. I still need to cut a plate to sit under the front servo mount, but 2 washers have worked fine for now.

Ok, I went back to the drawing board, ditched the front end, then started on a multi link light weight front end. Both upper and lower arms are adjustable for caster, camber, ride height. The shock absorbers are adjustable either on the shock collar for ride height or on the links to the hubs. I decided to put some zero offset wheels on, mainly for better steering as it will pivot tighter rather than the 11mm ones which would catch the bodyshell. It sits at 200mm and is adjustable for front width if I ever change bodyshells. Other than the steering to sort out with a long turnbuckle, and the battery to fit near the back, I am fairly happy with the results.

What brand are the rear wheels (RIMS)? those are Sick!

MST's?

They are mst g25 rims with 11mm offset. I have the same style in gold 5mm offset on the escort cosworth one.

The servo mount is on it's way, hopefully it will fit, the same with the longer servo horn. Once it arrives, I can finish off the steering linkages. The bumper and front body mounts should fit hopefully once the servo is mounted. Next will be changing the electronics around as the new battery tray will go at the back to even out the weight distribution. It might end up with a brushless system, but if I do then it will have to be the Team Orion Ddrive as it has the esc built in and only 45amp so should be perfect for what I need to save space. It will steer more once the servo horn arrives as it touches the suspension mounts. Then I need to decide on the wheels, I have some graphite vintage wheels I may fit.

The electrics are evened out, once the final parts arrive then I can put the nissan body back on and test it out. It has been fun to take a very high grip chassis and convert it from 4wd to rear wheel drive, make it less grippy and also to lighten the front end and allow very low body shells to fit. It's also now 200mm wide.

I dont think the final parts will arrive before new year, so its body is back on ready for the shelf again. I put the drift tyres on the graphite wheels, and put the closest looking rear drift wheels on.

I really want some corner weight scales to properly set the car up, and a setup station, maybe it will be the new year purchase.
