So I'm trying to keep a budget while we purchase a house. I've been looking for a modern Tamiya Chassis to buy for offroad racing (DBO1l/TRFxx) but they are difficult to find.

There are loads of Tamiya Onroad chassis to choose from. Which one will be able to hang with other manufacturers chasssis at club level?

Anything modern that's not a TT02 variant. TA07RR is just out, TRF420 is on sale on tamiyausa. TB05 and TA07 regular versions need alloy suspension blocks and stiffeners if you race on carpet (not so much on asphalt), but they are all great. There is also Tamiya classes and USGT classes which are quite heavily restricted in terms of hop ups and the like. I have enjoyed switching to onroad, although it was frustrating at first with how sensitive to setup the cars are.

Its the TRF419XR, but you get the idea...they also have the TB Evo 7 on sale too.

Onroad is the better bet if you want to race a Tamiya, but I would decide on what you would prefer to race before choosing the brand. Offroad using a non-Tamiya is still fun offroad racing...

As for what onroad kit to choose, its a tough one. I think the best option is to buy a TRF419 or 420, or a TA07MS and be done with it. That way you have the best out of the box and don't need to buyany hopups.

The other option is to get a TB05Pro or TA07Pro and then choose upgrades. For me they would be:

Alloy suspension blocks (essential upgrade)

Alloy servo mount

Carbon damper stays

Swaybars

Springs

Shock oils

Then I would think about the next steps. I went with carbon stiffeners for the TA07Pro but have now bought the Exotek RS7 which means the stiffeners are not required. Look at the Exotek conversions for both the TB05 and TA07 as while they seem pricey, they're still cheaper than a TRF car. Also, check what they come with first too, as some come with servo mounts, damper stays etc.

This still leaves you with gear diffs not a spool, no DCJ's, plastic steering etc, but I don't think they're as important as the hopups listed above. You can add these later of course, and spreading the cost isn't so bad.

The TA07RR might be a good option as it has the carbon fibre stiffeners and all the other things you would want, it really is a plastic chassis version of a TRF car. The TA07R is missing the stiffeners so factor the cost of those in and you'll be close to the RR anyway.

Really though, the best option would be a TRF car on sale as you can't beat that value right now.

Thanks guys! Wifey shot me down, we are in the process of buying a house.

I might need to sell a project or two so I can go racing.
