I’m after some advice on how to get a good colour red on my Ferrari.  I have the PS2 red that is listed but wondering after I do 3-4 coats if I should do a couple of layers of either white or black to bring the colour out. What is better? Just keep to the red or use white or black underneath to get a good colour.

I'm no expert but I believe black will make the overall appearance darker red and white lighter red (unsurprisingly). Some people use silver too which is supposed to make it brighter and add some depth to it. Or so I I've read on here anyway.

But I'm sure someone with more extensive knowledge on painting their shells will advise accordingly. I'm just a 'get over with asap' type really 😀

Definitely not black.  It will make the red ugly and dark.  I recently made this mistake and can confirm that it will disappoint.

Back it with silver or white to get that bright vibrant racing red indicative of Ferrari.

I found this pic on another forum with some brief text if it helps.. I do have in the family a paint expert (1:1 scale cars :)) he’s done more than a few Supercars and concourse spray jobs in the past.. I have no idea if the techniques cross over with the model paints but I will ask later and feed back.

“This is just two coats of clear on top of two tcoats of red on pink primer, nothing polished yet while I wait to cure. There’s a few imperfections I want to wet dry with 3000 grit. Then I’ll do a couple more coats of clear. Then I’ll be using my usual Tamiya polishing compounds with a final coat of wax.”

So the expert says (real car paints) he’d have used a red primer, or for want of that, mixing your own, might get away with some red in the light grey. The base colour should be built up in many many mist coats, just the lightest of dusting each time. I now know why my monster beetle Italian red looks nothing like the box art colour... because I followed someone else’s tip of using the light grey tamiya primer and even after 3 coats of red it’s still showing the grey base... still looks lovely though.. just a little more burgundy.

I would go with PS-2 red and check the covering after each coat. If it is opaque I would paint it with one or two coats silver which makes the red brighter. Finally I would spray a coat of black as in my opinion it looks better when the shell is mounted.
