I made a gearbox shield from 1mm alu plate and a metal 'U' bracket .So I set about this with a metal bracket from a ' Meccano' knock off kit . modified it to fit over the gearbox rib , drilled out the gearbox hole all of the way through , bolted the U bracket on . The bracket hole for the guard is offset as the gearbox rib is offset to centre. I made a card template , and traced it onto the alu , cut out and shaped , drilled hole . I shaped it to be 'free-floating' as it were so only bolted to the bracket with one bolt to act as a damper from impact , works well
