Mrowka 496 Posted August 5, 2020 And a 4WD buggy to put it in, would you put it in the front or rear? Or neither? The car in question is another Javelin re re, and only after scouring the internet for months have I been able to to find only one OTW101 ball diff kit. Planned motor is at this time a HW 13.5T brushless, if that affects anything.
Finnsllc 917 Posted August 6, 2020 So u cant or wont do 2? or is that not an option?
Mrowka 496 Posted August 6, 2020 Not an option at this time. It took me months to find one ball diff kit for sale. I guess I could wait until I scrounge up a second one, or see if I can con my friends in Europe into ordering me one and shipping it to the States. *If* I even can find one in Europe, that is. The ball diff kit is out of stock at RCMart, Plaza Japan, etc.. Or just build the Javelin the way it is.
SupraChrgd82 1425 Posted August 6, 2020 Put it in the back. It will act to increase rear traction. Understeer is easier to drive than oversteer.
Wooders28 4723 Posted August 6, 2020 Rear, Under acceleration the front end is light/in the air, anyway.
Lee76 638 Posted August 6, 2020 Which BD kit is it?
TwistedxSlayer 1290 Posted August 6, 2020 Put it in the bin 🤣🤣ball diffs are evil and should never have been created. Gear diffs for life (apart from my TB Evo4 build) which is whole different story. Kind regards The avid fan of hating ball diffs. But failing that. Use the advice above and stick it in the rear. 1
Mrowka 496 Posted August 6, 2020 Why the hate for ball diffs? That is an honest question.
svenb 3778 Posted August 6, 2020 Less consistency than a gear diff but I like them👍

If set up wrong, can slip, cause excessive heat, and melt the diff housing. Loads more grip, in low grip situations, but a gear diff is better with high grip (ie, carpet)
Jontea 334 Posted August 7, 2020 BDAD! It's all you need concern yourself with. If you're racing I can kinda get the use of them, if not racing, what's the point.

It's a way of thinking, an almost Zen like state, it allows you to take your buggy out, thrash it around, put it away, take it out, thrash it around, again and again and again (without having to ever touch the diff). TLDR: Ball Diffs Are Dead

I like everything to by quantifiable and measurable and thus repeatable. I actually prefer Tamiya's earlier ball diffs. The shim style would have been fool proof (if not limited in adjustment range), though admittedly the materials they used meant it fell short in actual application. DF01 ball diffs are just screw down tight and forget it. What worse are the consequences if things "done by feel" aren't correct. If you're off, you can mess up a ball diff pretty quick. Things tightened and torqued to specifications help me sleep at night . I know it works, but the thought of all the motive power going through essentially tiny contact points on tiny diff balls pressed against diff rings....well, I guess I just like me some gear diffs.
