If you only have one ball diff kit

Recommended Posts

And a 4WD buggy to put it in, would you put it in the front or rear? Or neither?

The car in question is another Javelin re re, and only after scouring the internet for months have I been able to to find only one OTW101 ball diff kit.

Planned motor is at this time a HW 13.5T brushless, if that affects anything.

Not an option at this time. It took me months to find one ball diff kit for sale.

I guess I could wait until I scrounge up a second one, or see if I can con my friends in Europe into ordering me one and shipping it to the States. *If* I even can find one in Europe, that is.

The ball diff kit is out of stock at RCMart, Plaza Japan, etc..

Or just build the Javelin the way it is.

Put it in the back.  It will act to increase rear traction.  Understeer is easier to drive than oversteer.

Rear,

Under acceleration the front end is light/in the air, anyway.

Put it in the bin 🤣🤣ball diffs are evil and should never have been created.

Gear diffs for life (apart from my TB Evo4 build) which is whole different story.

Kind regards

The avid fan of hating ball diffs.

But failing that. Use the advice above and stick it in the rear.

Less consistency than a gear diff but I like them👍

That is an honest question.

More maintenance, they need rebuilt if they start getting gritty.

If set up wrong, can slip, cause excessive heat, and melt the diff housing.

Loads more grip, in low grip situations, but a gear diff is better with high grip (ie, carpet)

BDAD! It's all you need concern yourself with.

If you're racing I can kinda get the use of them, if not racing, what's the point.

BDAD?

Put it in the search bar.

It's a way of thinking, an almost Zen like state, it allows you to take your buggy out, thrash it around, put it away, take it out, thrash it around, again and again and again (without having to ever touch the diff).

TLDR: Ball Diffs Are Dead

Ok, I got "basically drunk and disorderly" when I put that in the search bar, so.....:blink:?

Even when not racing, still loads more grip on slippy stuff!

That is an honest question.

And I found the 1st one I built and the 2nd one I built to be a total PITA.

I have a personal dislike for things "done by feel". I like everything to by quantifiable and measurable and thus repeatable. I actually prefer Tamiya's earlier ball diffs. The shim style would have been fool proof (if not limited in adjustment range), though admittedly the materials they used meant it fell short in actual application. DF01 ball diffs are just screw down tight and forget it.

What worse are the consequences if things "done by feel" aren't correct. If you're off, you can mess up a ball diff pretty quick. Things tightened and torqued to specifications help me sleep at night :D. I know it works, but the thought of all the motive power going through essentially tiny contact points on tiny diff balls pressed against diff rings....well, I guess I just like me some gear diffs.
