It’s been a while for me, but committed myself to probably the last chance this month today by charging a LiPo for the XM-01 Giulia. I figured being a bit rusty in RBP the added advantage of 4WD & 4WBraking would be my best option 🤔

IMG_0500.jpeg

There’s a very slim chance Sunday next week, or Monday morning I could get another go. I do have Mission Impossible at the Movies locked in on the Sunday with Mrs RB,  Monday morning here would still technically be Sunday GMT to get the results in if I do.

Well had an interesting start to today’s session.

Being as the usual spot I go to is full of cars on a week day I knew I’d have try somewhere else. There is a HUGE boat trailer car park just around the corner from there. So there were a few vehicles parked up but with what must be an acre of space, still plenty of room. So I set up in the corner van nicely in the shade with enough room between it & a lamp post. Once Hebbes was laid and a few practice laps completed I heard a 3 tonne truck with an empty tri-axle boat trailer coming around, so naturally pulled the Giulia up my feet and watched in amazement as said truck proceeded to park in the narrow passage between me and the lamp post, stopping with the end of his trailer hanging over marker 5. As I stood scratching my head in disbelief in what’s the benefit of that particular spot with hi-vis fluorescent markers laid out as opposed to the 50 or so vacant spaces where there wasn’t a toy car just witnessed running around, the driver hops out saying “You’ve still got plenty of room there mate??”
“Erm… well…no not really” I replied as the driver just walked off anyway. Bizarre. Laughably bizarre.

So Markers retrieved, I went over the other end enclosing a spot using the van to lay it all out again. Luckily I’d had a coffee by then.

1st attempt my rustiness was clearly apparent, and very inconsistent. Bordering on hopeless really.

2nd attempt was more encouraging as I was up 4 laps from the first.

3rd was my best adding a further 3 laps to the count, put down to getting a feel for it again, tyres suitably  warmed, and obviously listening to Golden Brown by the Stranglers playing on the speaker suited the rhythm better the the previous Walking on the Moon by the Police & Close to Me by The Cure.

I was running much tighter and more consistent around 1 to 3, the sliding the back out for a very satisfying long drift from there to 6 on the throttle with medium grips, slowing to negotiate 7 & 8 before repeating the process. Nice 👌🏻

Attempt 4 saw a drop by 1 lap, I had also taken the dust cover off by then as I could feel the section on the chassis tub getting warm where the motor is, allowing for a more cooling which worked.

The Shorty Pack was nicely down to storage charge after that so decided to call it a day.

Would be great to get another go in at the end of next week but looking at the forecast it could be wet anyway. We’ll see how it goes.

I've ran a few packs with the M-05 on Ride slicks and got to a result I was happy with. It has started diffing out on the long straight, so not that consistent that I am used to.

I have tried different tyres on the M-08, since the rear soft  Shimizus said goodbye. Carten kit tyres were awful. Only usable for bashing or for kids (on an FWD). Then I tried Tamiya 60D radials. S grips rear and some hard stuff I got together with the M-08. A bit understeery, but so good that I ordered a set of M grips for the front, to have as an option. They look the business on Carten wheels. I had also ordered a set of Team Powers premounts in 34 and 32, which I also tried. The rears were not as grippy as the Ride slicks,  but I still was able to make the same lapcount as with the Ride slicks. Team Powers are easy to get here, not having to order from abroad,  so for the M-08 when running the Escort shell a clear favorite. Looks kind of like 5 sooke Revolution Classic Line fro "a distance ". After all the M-08 ended up only one lap behind the M-05,  which I am really happy with.

I have also ran the XV-01 red Lancia and it put the hammer down beating the M-05 with two laps, but none of the stints made it through the quality control. I made two stints with that superb lapcount,  but on both of them I was running over marker 4, so nothing to submit.

I have also ran the winter XV-01 and XV-02 on different tyres. Now the MST LTX are almost through, a set of Tamiya radials (I got two sets with the winter XV-01 and the XV-02- horrible tyres) are through and one tyre competely split and ripped and the old Ride slicks have finally split on the inside. Going in rally fashion there was little consistency, so nothing to submit. But I was having a ball and have learned a lot.

With the white backing on the Escort shell it's obvious where the Shimizus has ended up.

This week I have been running the Tomahawk,  so I have a result in the 380 class. I tried the worn out Mini Pins I have liked on the Thunder Dragon,  but I did not even finished one lap before it was straight back to the "pit" and the not so worn out Mini Spikes were mounted again. This car is like a slow,  nervous M-08,  so the biggest challenge was not spinning while runding marker 5. I had loads of aborted stints because of that. It responds good to weight transfer while braking,  but it's an ultrafine line between success and failure on tarmac. Normally I would prefer running it on loose surface,  but I have been lacy and just used the already marked up course. It's ages since it rained properly, so it's extremely dry and the surface would not hold up long enough for a pack anyway.

I have fitted the fan mount now,  so summer temps are less of a concern. Not that the temps yesterday and today between 7 and 9° C would be a problem.

Your Tomahawk just continues to grow on me. I really need to pull my finger out and get mine built. Are those the standard Tomahawk wheels on there? I know you like Schumacher tires and believe they are all for 2" wheels so curious to know what wheels you have at both ends.

I’ve had a few chances to run the course for this round and spent each 5 minute session trying out a setup or parts change to see how I could improve my times.

The first issue was my servo. The chassis was originally built up for spec euro truck racing, so the servo was ok, but a bit slow. I replaced it with an AGF servo that has a 0.075 transit speed and now I don’t have to turn the wheel on my transmitter way ahead of the turn. The car can now match my eyes and hands. Sort of.

Next up was the wheelbase. I have been running the Audi Quattro body, but it is meant for the longer wheelbase setting on the TT01. To shorten things up, I prepared and installed the Porsche GT3 bodyshell which allowed me to flip the rear arms and shrink the overall length. While it’s still a bit of a barge on these small courses, it did allow me to tighten up my lines.

The last change for now was the addition of turnbuckle tie rods. I wanted to add some toe out to help with corner initiation and between this change and the quick servo I am able to navigate successive corners much easier.

I have a few other items to install and try, but I’m wanting to do each piece at a time so I can understand the change and get a feel for what it is doing. Next up are the adjustable upper arms, wheels and tires, and more adjustable shocks, but for now I was focused on adding speed without overdriving the car and sliding about.

Normally I race 2WD buggy at a local indoor track, so this has been a great reason to spend time driving my on road cars in a more focused way. The closest on road track is over 6 hours away!

Wheels are 2,2 JC Racing Ultima Pepper Pots. Tyres on the pic are Cut Stagger low profile in silver at the front and Mini Spike 2 in yellow at the rear. For tarmac I just run whatever old/worn down tyres I have. The fronts had until now lived an easy life only on gravel or astro. They were new in 2021. I opened up a package of similar tyres the other day and instantly felt the difference. They were then destined for tarmac.

Woohoo! I knew the TL-01LA was good, but I wasn't expecting it to be 1st place good!

Thanks to everyone who entered. Nice to see some new names amongst the entrants too.

Congrats @TurnipJF. You were right when you wrote that you made a good result that could make it to the podium and that the feeling was goodB). That is something with a "big" car.

And as TurnipJF says: Happy to see a few new names here.  Welcome to you :).

I am also happy over my own improvement from last time making 10 more laps with the M-05 than last time. This time the Tomahawk made the same lapcount as the M-05 did then.

I was thinking we might go back to the Mandes Rallycross circuit, last seen in Round 38. Last time we ran this track, the field was very small. Let's see how many participants we can get this time!

20230831_232026.md.jpg

Running anti-clockwise.

Coordinates:

marker 1= 3-4,5

marker 2 = 1-5

marker 3 = 1-1

marker 4 = 1-3

marker 5 = 2-2

marker 6 = 3-1

marker 7 = 5,5-1,5

marker 8 = 3-2

marker 9 = 6-3

marker J = 7,5-3

1 joker lap to be made (clockwise around marker J) in each 5 minute stint.

Round 58 to run until midnight UTC on Sunday 29 June. Rules and lap count submissions as per the first post of the thread. Hope to see you all there!

Brilliant. I loved that course last time. I really got a good rythm there and that was probably the first course Iwas deeaming about at night (I often do that after I have got in the zone):D

Nice 👌🏻. I best remember to take lots of chalk to mark out the route so I don’t get lost where I’m supposed to be going.

I marked up and made the first revisit to this challenging and lovely course just now. I am recently consistent,  but still is not up to the pace from last time. The tarmac where I ran then was almost new,  so very grippy. Both cars were 210mm wheelbase,  but the Ride slicks I am running now are grippier than the Shimizus on the surface Iam currently running on.

By next week I should have the Lapmonitor operative. Just gonna modify one of the mounts I got for the transponder to fit. Very much looking forward to not do manual counting anymore.

I had my first attempts at this course this weekend and once I got into a rhythm this course was a lot of fun! The joker lap adds an extra challenge, too.

Instead of the TT-01 I've been using I decided to pull out some other cars - my Egress and a TT-02 in rally spec.

The Egress drove wonderfully on the course and is shod with leftover slicks from my 2WD race buggy. They're a bit worn out, but did the job. The only issue I had with this car was the incorrect gearing. On such a tight track the SS BZ motor got ridiculously hot, so I'll have to swap pinions before attempting again.

As for the rally car, it's utterly useless and oh so fun. The setup I have on it does not translate well to high grip tracks, so driving a lap consisted of full throttle, hard on the brakes, massive slide, then full throttle out of the corner. Fun, but hard to be consistent when all 4 wheels are never pointing the same direction. It has long travel dampers so it's cool to watch it roll around and I have a Holmes Hobbies retro sport 17T motor in it. For some reason the drivetrain on this car is really loud, so it sounds like a proper rally car with a straight cut gearbox. I swap the wheels between my TT-02 and -01, but after running this car the tires are looking a bit worse off!

On all cars I'm having to fit fans as the temperatures were above 90f/32c and everything was getting hot, hot, hot.

I tried the Lapmonitor for the first time today. No improvement regarding best lapcount,  but it's nice to see that on the non joker-laps the deviation in laptimes is max 0,5 second. I am happy with that.

The biggest issue was that the phone lost contact with the Lapmonitor,  so I only finished 2 full stints- and a load of unfinished when the counting stopped. I think I have to put the phone direct  at the Lapmonitor. I stand between marker 3 and 6 with the phone and the Lapmonitor is after marker 2, to avoid direct sunlight. I later moved it to the finish line and it worked there as well in the sun,  so maybe not that important. Nevertheless it feels very pro having such equipment and it's nice to see the times and beeing able to compare them when I start running the M-08 later.

I always try to get about 90deg between the lap monitor and the sun and it's been working great. As for the phone losing contact, that only happened once. The phone was really far from the device and putting it on the ground closer like you did solved the issue 👍

First proper post in the new layout.

The last weeks have been insane with parents taxi driving from after work 'till morenor less bedtime. Luckily the kast football match was on Monday. We've also had a fair share of rain (and wind).

I made the third attempt with the M-05 yesterday, one week after the last. I made 3 stints all on the until now best lapcount and it's stagnated there. Once I was about a car length away from the Lapmonitor when the buzzer went off,  so maybe possible to do one more lap on paper. I was also able to shave off on my best laptime. As usual the car is super consistent.

Last Friday I got a nice M07R roller. I have been thinking about doing some clubbing and low effort racing in the winter,  so I wanted a car most people run and with a proper diff. Here it is mandatory to run max 20t pinion and Sport Tuned or 17,5t and I did not want to downgrade my M-05 to the original gearing. It's also thinner with spare parts here, so the decition was easy.  I have taken out the G4 Hobbywing from the XV-02 and utilized the electronics I have bought for the Carten M210 FWD. The installation was finally finished yesterday evening after getting the last small pieces I needed.

First go today. Oh man, this thing is fast and smooth. Directly on the first stint it beat the M-05 with 1 lap.  I then made 3 more stints all with even 1 more lap and with the fastest lap 0,5 sec faster than the M-05. All this on the same tyres I was running on the M-05 yesterday. Needless to say that I fell in love with it immediately.

I have got both the 256 mm Swift and the 239mm Swift Sport bodies,  but in the nearest future the blue body will have to do.

Edit: Unknown error when uploading pic of the lovely chassis,  despite plenty of storage.  Will have to come later.

Exciting "news" about your acquiring a 07! You are selling it well ;) It's a lot of fun when a new car performs well on the first try.

It was an instant love and it feels very "grown up". It's very responsive and with the Power HD B7 servo It's super nimble- also with 256mm wb.

I while ago there was a hopped up M-07 Concept in the classifieds, but I felt it was too much. It had almost the same setup as mine, but it had the better Hobbywing xerun pro ESC and the newer Xerun g4R motor, but withYR shocks. It had been raced with success and held the track record at the local club. Then I started calculating and found out the price wasn't that bad. All of a sudden it was gone, so nothing more to think about.

Then this R turned up for half the price as a roller. I had the electronics already waiting for the Carten M210 FWD and I meanwhile wanted a less open motor in the XV-02. Well, why not let the gear come to their home B). It's built according to the rules for M-chassis racing here, so when the winter comes it only needs Shimizus, put on the bumper again

and it's ready.

So, inspired by our TurnipJF I made 7 stints with the M-08 now. It's 4 laps behind the M-07R and 2 laps behind the M-05. It's almost matching the best laptime of the M-05 and the best  deviation of the non joker laps were 0,23 sec. Pretty happy with the that.

I ran a ST with 20t pinion this time,  to get a feeling of how it would be if I was to race it here in Norway.

Nice find on the M07R @Andreas W 👍🏻 I’ve lost count how many times I’ve put Concept version in the cart this year, but  life’s been getting in the way a fair bit, and also waiting to see when Tamiya will be releasing the M07&8R again 🤔

With a bit of luck I might actually be able to get a session tail end of this week…

Got my backside into gear this evening and got out for a few laps of Mandes.

I think I’ve heard mention of a couple of M08’s hitting this one, so my M08 Mini and TT02R Goodsmile Racing were the weapons of choice. The fact they can use the same battery pack with a Deans plug is nice and convenient.

It certainly took a few warm up laps to get my eye in with the M08, after repeatedly going wrong exiting marker 3, Mrs RB took the initiative & drew in the correct continuous line from 3 to 8 which made life a lot easier.

2 attempts were made with the M08, the first one was a understandably a bit messy, but the second attempt things started to flow a little better by achieving 2 extra laps. I didn’t feel like I was race fit enough to get the best from it unfortunately, but still an enjoyable run nonetheless.  Just something about seeing a Mini buzzing around that puts a smile on one’s face though.

The TT02R was powered up for its couple of attempts next. It looks huge in comparison sitting next to the Mini and I was wondering if it would actually make it around the tighter sections of the circuit.  Turns out it wasn’t to be a problem for it at all, taking things in its stride quite nicely. The brand new set of Jetko super soft tyres & rims probably helped a lot as I seem to remember the last time I used the fairly knackered Jetko’s on there were sliding around more akin to a drifter.

This plus getting the hang of Mandes resulted in 2 more laps over the M08’s best count.

With 2 runs each with both cars done just before darkness started to fall, a bit of hooning around brought the battery down to storage nicely.

All that was left to do then was pick up the markers, and enjoy a cup of delicious Pumpkin Soup with Turkish bread in the twilight that Mrs RB had prepared previously.

Just nice to be out sometimes.
